Last weekend Huntington hosted its annual holiday parade. It started at 7pm and went right past the bakery. When Carole and I came back to close at 6:30, our parking lot was full of hatch back cars backed in with their hatches open. A couple of people thanked us with providing the perfect viewing stand for the parade. Remember that for next year.

What I thought was great about the parade was whole families with three generations were sharing in the excitement of the various floats that came by. Kudos to all the participants, especially the many fire departments who do great work all year round and put on this wonderful event.

It was a little later that night that I realized how truly special the community that makes up Huntington is. Saturday, after closing, a food pantry picks up our leftover bread and pastries. That night I didn't recognize the person picking up as it must have been one of the first times he acted as courier. He asked if I was Mr. Reinwald and then thanked me for my generosity to not only the food pantry, but to the ambulance corp as well, to which he served. I said, "I am a small cog in the wheel." He said, "No you do so much..." but I stopped him and reminded him about what he is doing and I thanked him. He paused and smiled. We agreed that it is every little part each of us plays that makes a community. I went home that night very proud to be a part of Huntington.

I realize that not everyone has the time or resources to support and volunteer. But do the next best thing, participate in some activities and if you see someone serving the community stop to thank them for their efforts. I guarantee it will make you both feel good.

Several years ago I wrote of Malcolm Gladwell's book The Outliers, and the small town of Rosetto Pa. Here is the Link. You might be amazed how a strong community can affect your personal health. I think Huntington can be such a place with your help.

This year, with Christmas falling on a Thursday, the Bakery schedule is a bit awkward. To alleviate this the bakery will be open Monday the 22nd from 8am to 5pm. I thank everyone in advance for your patience and understanding of the stretched limits our staff will be working. We are very lucky this year that 5 returning college students are going to be joining the regular crew behind the counter to help things run smoothly.   Come in and say hello to some of our returning employees.

Please remember to take some time to enjoy the holiday season and if I do not see you in the store, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

Please have a warm and joyous December.

Sincerely, Rich Reinwald
