I may have said this before, but an old German baker we had in Bellerose always used this adage around Father's Day, "It is easy to become a father, but very hard to be a father." With that in mind there is one question every father asks of himself. How well will my kids turn out? I remember asking a then 80 year old friend of mine "When do I know how they turned out?" His answer was, "Never, it is truly an ongoing experiment." I don't know about that, but I do understand your responsibilities to your children are ongoing.

The funny thing about those responsibilities is that they create the opportunity to bring joy into your life. I especially feel that is the case with my 3 boys.   The warning to all us Dads out there is do not let the joys of fatherhood cloud your judgment and remember that you are an important role model in your family. Your children watch and imitate you. Do not be surprised that your everyday actions will become the model for how your children will act.

The other day I was riding down N.Y. Ave and about 20 feet past the pedestrian crosswalk a father was holding his young children's' hands, weaving through stopped cars to cross the street. What was he thinking? An innocuous act; but what kind of message he is sending to the children. The same can be said for yelling at other drivers in the car, acting poorly in public, taking advantage of a salesperson. Did you ever get undercharged and brag about it? Your children see it all. Act as you would like your children to act. When you fall off that horse, as we all do, say you are sorry. That may be the best lesson of all. I wish all the fathers hugs from their children; that will make your day for sure!

A salesman was in the other day and we began talking about doughnuts. He relayed how he really didn't like Jelly Donuts. I asked him to try one of ours. He said, "I'd rather not." I persisted and got him to try a small piece. I said to him "you don't have to eat the whole thing." He said, "I know but this is darn good. This is the standard all jelly donuts should be judged against."

Friday June 6th is National Donut Day. On this day Reinwald's Bakery will give one free jelly donut to each customer. All you have to do is ask. Remember Channel 12 selected Reinwalds as the best jelly donut on Long Island. Not bragging but I kind of feel I would put our jelly donuts up against anyone's; nationwide.

Also we would like to celebrate Jelly Donuts all month so it is one of our Sweet Treat items for the month of June. But 3 and get the 4th free all month long. Check out the side panel for the rest of the Sweet Treat menu. We will be open till 3pm on Father's Day so get your orders in today.

Black Fish

I went to Jeff's seafood to get some flounder, but they suggested Black Fish instead.  Boy was I glad I did.  This recipe was great and our whole wheat baguette is the perfect compliment.

Ingredients:

4 blackfish filets
1 tbs olive oil
2 tbs sherry
2 tbs lemon juice
1 tbs butter
1 table chopped Italian parsley
1 tbs fresh or freeze dried chives

Pour 1/2 lemon juice over filets and let sit for 5 min.

Pat dry with paper towel and season with kosher salt and pepper.

Heat saute pan over medium to medium high heat.  Saute in two batches so as not to over crowd.  Should take about 4 min.

Halfway carefully flip over with spatula.

Put aside filets and melt butter with and add herbs and remaining lemon juice and sherry.  Bring to a boil for about a minute.  Salt and pepper to taste and spoon over filets and serve.
