The last few years have brought a renewed appreciation for the members of the U.S. Armed Forces. As a country we have always asked our young men to put their beings at risk for the sake of those left at home. On Memorial Day we remember those that made the ultimate sacrifice.

 

     I was reading a book on the Civil War and had occasion to re-read President Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. As you know this speech was to dedicate the Gettysburg cemetery where many of the fallen were placed. On that November morning, Edward Everett, a most famous orator, spoke for two hours. Then President Lincoln stood, removed his hat, and spoke the most famous 270 words ever written in American History. I believe this speech portrays the true spirit of Memorial Day. Lincoln's prose evokes emotions that make me proud to be an American. This one line really stands out to me.  


     "It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us-that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion-that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain"

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

 

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation, so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

 

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate, we can not consecrate, we can not hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. Easy Grill Cleaning Tips

I know we have had this a couple years ago, but it is worth repeating.  Most people think that cleaning your grill means turning up the heat to burn off the stuck on grease and giving it a quick brush. However you should treat your grill as well as your other appliances. Not only is it safer to have a clean grill, your food will taste better too!


 Before you start your BBQ season you should give your grill a good cleaning. First thing's first; for a gas grill make sure the gas is off and disconnected. The cleaning will require some disassembling but it is worth it in the long run. First take off the grates and the burner guards and place them in a bucket of hot soapy water. Scrub the inside of your grill with a wire brush.

It is important to get in the gas valves. Use a pipe cleaner to clean out the residue. Doing this not only gives you a more uniform cooking surface but it can prevent gas bursts which can be dangerous. Rinse it down with the hose and let it dry. Reassemble and you are ready to grill. Make sure to let the grill burn a few extra minutes before using just to make sure all of the soap is burned off.

Another good tip is to spray a little cooking spray before using to keep it clean and make sure to check the grease tray regularly.
