The Super Bowl is this Sunday. Try as you may,you cannot avoid all the publicity. The media attention for this event rivals the presidential election. Ray Lewis is a favorite subject. Much is being said of his "passion" for the game. He credits this passion for his success. I kind of think the 49'ers share his passion, so who is going to win; I don't know.
During the month of October the bakery had a cupcake sale to benefit ACDS, which serves children and adults with Down Syndrome, autism and other developmental disabilities. Well, with Superstorm Sandy, the resulting upheaval and the holidays, the bakery was never able to make the donation presentation. Carole and I finally made it to the school, off of Old Country Road, on January 15th. What a heartwarming and uplifting experience. In our October newsletter I told of my experience with a family of a Down Syndrome child. While there are definitely challenges, the joy she brought to all around her was special. This was reinforced during our visit to the school. The children were delighted to see us and the hugs we got lasted for a week. The real reward though was watching the interaction of the children with the teachers and the staff. Ray Lewis speaks of passion. That passion pales in comparison to what I saw at ACDS that day. Teachers, administrators, aides, even custodians showed enthusiasm and joy for progress made and understanding and patience for the challenges. I feel we at Reinwald's Bakery have a passion to make the freshest baked goods for Huntington. The day spent at ACDS was inspirational and reinvigorated my faith and passion for the world around me and my place in it.
Besides the Superbowl, in February we also celebrate Valentine's Day and Ash Wednesday. Fat Tuesday heralds the return of the Fastnacht, or Lenten Donut. Customers wait all year for these special donuts. Also this month we begin making the traditional Hot Cross Buns.
Last, but perhaps most important, is Valentine's Day. The bakery has lots of special desserts to share with that special person. From Heart shaped mousse cakes to chocolate covered strawberries, we will have the treat to delight your Valentine.
Until next time enjoy your days,
Rich Reinwald
