Breakfast with Ann HoodAnn Hood

Join us on April 26 for a networking breakfast, featuring bestselling author, Ann Hood. Presented by WLC and Leading Women, Ann will speak on Embracing Your Passion: Do What You Love, Love What You Do. Ann Hood is an American novelist and short story writer whose award-winning work often draws upon her own life.

This is sure to be a truly inspirational morning as we hear about Ann's journey through grief and struggles to regain her passion for writing after her daughter's sudden death. Ann reminds us that at the intersection of challenge is where our skills, passions and our greatest potential and strengths lie. It is the "sweet spot" in life that takes us from good to great. When you love what you do, and do what you love, you unleash passion and nourish your soul. Autographed copies of Ann's new book, The Obituary Writer, will be on sale at the event. For more information, or to reserve your seat, visit our website.

WLC Membership Meetingmembership event

On February 7th, WLC held their first membership meeting with 50 members in attendance. FM Global graciously hosted the. Barbara Silvis, United Way of RI Board Chairwoman and founding member of the WLC, opened the meeting by welcoming all and reciting some impressive statistics on the affinity group's growth and successes over the last 18 months. Barbara shared that nationally there are over 140 WLCs, with a robust membership of 55,000, who together raised more than $150 million last year. Barbara then introduced Gertrude Jones, WLC Chairwoman and United Way Board Member. Gertrude elaborated on WLC accomplishments to date, including:

  • 28,000 backpacks stuffed and donated to children in eight different cities in RI
  • 13,000 books collected and donated last summer
  • 60+ volunteer hours donated in classrooms and local programs

The interactive portion of the meeting began with each of the tables discussing topics related to women's leadership, taking action in our community, future investments and improving childhood literacy. The major themes of the conversations included the value that we receive from getting involved and giving back, the importance of parent and family engagement, the life skills and experiences that are learned through reading, and how our own personal experiences with reading inspire us today.

As the event came to an end, each member was challenged to get further involved and recruit one new woman to WLC. We currently have 100 members, and imagine the power behind 200 women working to impact change in our community. There is power in numbers and together, we can make a difference.

WLC Members Volunteer at March Into Reading

In celebration of the 10th annual March Into Reading festival20 volunteers from WLC and BankNewport went into five pre-school programs on Aquidneck Island to read to students and assist teachers with classroom activities.

This annual celebration is sponsored by the Aquidneck Collaborative for Education and Salve Regina University. During the last week of February, authors and illustrators went into elementary and middle schools to share their skills and books with students. WLC supported the effort for a second year by bringing volunteers into preschools and early childhood learning centers in the community. Each participating center was provided with a bag of books written or illustrated by a local author, information for parents and families, and a gift card to Island Books to enhance their program's libraries.

Members volunteered at Twice as Nice YMCA, KinderArt, East Bay Community Action Program Headstart in Newport and Middletown, and Child & Family Sandpipers. The week ended with a free festival at Salve Regina University on Saturday, March 2nd.

Do you know someone who would bring energy and enthusiasm to WLC? We welcome new members to join us. Joining is easy!

WLC brings women together as a unique driving force to help close the gaps in early childhood literacy. Our goal is to partner philanthropy with volunteerism, so each member of WLC makes an annual gift of $1,000 or more to United Way's Community Impact Fund. Representing every county in the state, WLC members commit not only their financial support, but also their time, energy and talents. Working together, we make our community stronger.
