Well fall has arrived with a vengeance but we assure you, the sun and 65-70 degrees is on order for October 3rd! The Frontier Business Edge Golf Scramble is almost here. Why does the Chamber host a golf tournament, we are asked.................... Non-dues revenue is critical to maintain our current level of programs and operations. True costs of membership with our current membership numbers is over $940 per member and as you know, dues start at $325.

When 144 golfers and 15 wonderful sponsors hit Pumpkin Ridge one week from tomorrow, they are helping to fund YEA! (Young Entrepreneurs Academy), IMPACT*Beaverton (business retention & expansion efforts), Business Advocacy (work to ensure a highly productive pro-business environment at all levels of government), Networking & Coffee Connections and more.

It is really not about sponsoring "fun". There will also be business done on the course that day. We don't always hear of all the new business as a result of the 6 hours out on the greens, but I will never forget learning about a $15,000 contract inked between a member and a non-member in a week after meeting at our tourney in 2011.

Hope to see many of you October 3rd doing lots of business and keeping your Chamber strong!

Finish your week strongly and productively.

Sincerely,

The Chamber and Small Business Development Center  -

Your chamber continues to create strong service partnerships on behalf of the small business community in Beaverton. The chamber is privileged to partner with the Small Business Development Center- Portland Community College (SBDC-PCC), a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration. The Chamber hosts SBDC advisor, Jon-Michael Kowertz by appointment for free and confidential, one-on-one business advising.

As additional resource for small businesses in Beaverton, owners and entrepreneurs can schedule an appointment for SBDC advising and conveniently meet at the Beaverton Chamber of Commerce. Candidates for advising may need help in business start-up, marketing, planning, financing, loan package development and more. Business advising is at no charge and does not require chamber membership. To learn more about how the SBDC can help your business or to arrange an appointment contact the chamber at 503-350-2007 or email Michelle

Representing Business to Government...

Our Business Advocacy Council focuses on issues that directly impact businesses that most owners/managers do not have time to stay on top of but count on the Chamber to do so and be their voice.

Your Business Advocacy Council has done their homework and provides you the following for your information. The November election will be here before we know it. We encourage you to read up and get informed. We look at our issues from a business stand point. This should matter to you!

VOTE YES!

Ballot Measure 34-221: Proposed Countywide Vehicle Registration Fee for Road Maintenance -

We can't afford to fall behind

The condition of our roads is deteriorating and our list of deferred maintenance needs is currently more than $10.5 million and growing. Over the past 10 years, the average pavement condition rating of the county road system has dropped more than 10 points (on a scale of 0-100). It is projected to decline another 10 points over the next decade with current funding sources.

Cost-effective preventive maintenance avoids costly future repairs. Fixing roads after they've deteriorated can cost 5 to 10 times as much as preventive maintenance. Treating roads at the right time saves taxpayers money over the long term-potentially tens of millions of dollars over the next 20 to 30 years. Read more here

Ballot Measure 34-226: Beaverton - Authorizes bonds to rebuild city hall as public safety center

Beaverton has never had a dedicated police building. The city's public safety operations are housed in several locations, instead of one coordinated center. A volunteer citizen advisory group has urged Beaverton to update and consolidate to meet safety and security concerns. Read more here

Statewide Ballot Measures -

Measure 90 - Creates an open, top-two primary election System - Vote YES!

Allows for greater choice and voter participation in the primary - Read more  here

Measure 92 - Mandates labeling of certain foodstuffs that contain genetically modified organisms - Vote NO!

After very deliberate discussions, the BAC determined that this would create a costly business regulation not only for the businesses in food manufacturing, but for the state with regards to enforcement and monitoring. We believe the market place is already responding to consumers demand for improved and transparent labeling as you can already find products marked with none GMO or gluten-free etc. on our shelves. Read more here

NEXT MEETING: October 2, 2014.   7:30 - 8:30am
November elections and 2015 legislative agenda discussions

We meet monthly on the first Thursday at 7:30am - 8:30am in our down stairs conference room. Feel free to contact Lorraine if you have any questions. We'd love to have you.

All Business Advocacy Council Meetings are open to all members (appointed or not!). If you "get" the connection between monitoring regulations, ensuring business has input at the table on issues such as transportation, taxation and more...you should come and participate. All ideas and opinions are welcome.

Protection

Protection is so important and will bring you much stability and peace of mind when you have it. As business owners and representatives you know there are many ways in which to protect yourself, your employees and your loved ones. One of the hot buttons regarding protection this year has been Health Care. What is the Affordable Care Act, what does it mean for my current insurance, and how does it apply to me both personally and professionally? As you see listed above in this edition of the eBeat, the Beaverton Area Chamber of Commerce and Hillsboro Area Chamber of Commerce are partnering together to answer your questions pertaining to health care. We feel it is so important to provide you an outlet to gain more information that we are offering this free of charge. The whole public is welcome so please invite all of those you know who might have questions. The following speakers will be at the event -

Kevin Jeffries, Consumer Liaison, Oregon Insurance Division
John DiFalco, Agency Principal, WSC Insurance
Aaron Patnode, Executive Director, Cover Oregon
Chris Senz, Director and Chief Executive Officer, Tuality Health Alliance
Dawn Bonder, President & Chief Executive Officer, Health Republic
David Barnes, Manager of Strategic Engagement, Providence Accountable Care Services
Alison Nicholson, Sr. Director, Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of the Northwest
Ralph M. Prows, MD President & Chief Executive Officer, Oregon's Health CO-OP

Where else are you going to be in a room with top level representatives from the major medical companies in Oregon? Join us on October 29th to learn more about the current state of healthcare and what to expect in 2015. You will even learn information that you didn't know to ask about.
