Greetings!

2014 - an even year means elections. An even year means it is time to fire up our Candidate Endorsement Council and BACCPAC. Our teams will be busy crafting just the right questions for our written questionnaires, then from there develop our in-person interview questions, review our criteria and rating tools.........wait for the filing deadline, and away we will go. Bottom line - we look for those candidates that align with our pro-business values and belief system. Candidates that recognize reasonable business regulation and incentives that foster job creation and retention are essential to a healthy Beaverton and Oregon.

On our website, you can find our board's public policy principals and guidelines.

If you are considering a run for public office at the city, county, metro or state level, and are interested in pursuing an endorsement from the Beaverton Area Chamber of Commerce please email me your contact information. I will get in touch with you and advise you of this year's process as soon as it is set.

Finish your week strongly and productively.

Sincerely,

Lorraine'sSig

The Chamber and Small Business Development Center  -

Your chamber continues to create strong service partnerships on behalf of the small business community in Beaverton. The chamber is privileged to partner with the Small Business Development Center- Portland Community College (SBDC-PCC), a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration. TheChamber hosts SBDC advisor, Jon-Michael Kowertz every first Wednesday of the month from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and third Wednesday from 1:00 to 4:00 PM for free and confidential, one-on-one business advising.

On-the-Job Training Reimbursements Available for Local Businesses

WorkSource Centers are currently offering reimbursements to support local businesses for providing On-the-Job Training (OJT) to their newly-hired employees.  Through state and federal grants (via WorkSystems, Inc.), WorkSource is able to reimburse companies up to 50% of the wages for their new hires during the training period.

Hundreds of small and medium-sized companies throughout Washington and Multnomah Counties have utilized the OJT Program over the past few years to train and keep skilled, productive workers.  This program has proven to be a very cost-effective way to develop talent for businesses that require unique or niche skill sets.  It also benefits the economy by helping job seekers who may be otherwise highly-qualified for a job but for the lack of a couple of missing skills.  Examples of successful OJT's in Washington County this past year have included a wide range of skilled occupations, such as warehouse workers, bookkeepers, field service technicians, electronics technicians, and software developers.

For more information about the OJT Program or to see if your business is eligible, contact your local WorkSource Center.   Businesses located in Washington County, call 503-526-2712 (Alicia) or 503-612-4214 (Bryan).  Businesses in Multnomah County, call 503-280-6633 (Rhonda) or 503-669-7112, ext. 250 (Miriam).

Representing Business to Government...

Our Business Advocacy Council focuses on issues that directly impact businesses that most owners/managers do not have time to stay on top of but count on the Chamber to do so and be their voice.

NEXT MEETING: **February 6th, 2014.   7:30 - 8:30am

**Special Meeting and Tour of the Beaverton Police Department at Griffith Drive. Please contact Lorraine in advance if you'd like to join the council on this informational tour. You will need to complete a form in advance.

We meet monthly on the first Thursday at 7:30am - 8:30am in our down stairs conference room. Feel free to contact Lorraine if you have any questions. We'd love to have you.

All Business Advocacy Council Meetings are open to all members (appointed or not!). If you "get" the connection between monitoring regulations, ensuring business has input at the table on issues such as transportation, taxation and more...you should come and participate. All ideas and opinions are welcome.

Business After Hours in January was so much fun and the exercise we did to "Meet Your Board" really got the relationship building going so we thought.........................WHY NOT keep it going!

The first 10 members that email me and rsvp to attend in February at Rock Creek Corner, send me a personal "factoid" about themselves, will get to be front and center with the group. If you didn't make it to the January's - some examples were - Who was born in France? Who has been bit by a squirrel? Who has a black belt one dan in Tae Kwon Do?..........

Make yours interesting and engaging - the dialogue that took place was exciting!

Be nice to Evelyn, Sophal, Jafar, Sue and Jean.....Lorraine and I are heading South.  We will be out of the office Tuesday through Friday at the Western Association of Chamber Executives Conference learning how to take better care of YOU.

Have a great week!

Michelle
