Greetings!
Welcome to a new, fresh and fabulous new year! Staff and the board are excited for what is going to be a great successful year for business. We have three new board members that bring a wealth of experience, talent, expertise, connections and enthusiasm.
Ali Kavianian, Creative Planning Inc. is a young, energetic and successful financial planner and a well connected community involved activist. He is also currently in Leadership Beaverton.
Christine Moore, Pamplin Media and Beaverton Valley Times, has been involved in the Chamber for many years and will bring tremendous expertise in helping us maximize our media outreach this year for our members. We have some great ideas already percolating and look forward to more.
Dianne Danowski Smith, Publix Northwest, has been a member for many years, served as our chair of Business Advocacy and has been tremendously helpful in our public affairs arena. We are confident she's going to teach me more and more in this arena and improve our outreach to the community - talking about YOU - our members.
Come out to our Business After Hours "Meet Your Board of Directors" next Thursday the 16th at Laurel Parc and meet them personally. It's always a great one!
We've expanded, changed and improved our membership tiers/levels for 2014! We encourage you to go to our membership page and view them to get familiar with what's ahead and what you can take advantage of right away. Be sure and come to one of the next Maximize Your Membership Orientations on January 22nd at 8am in our offices (see our calendar for future dates)
Finish your week strongly and productively.
Sincerely,
Lorraine Clarno, President/CEO, ACE Beaverton Area Chamber of Commerce 503.350.2006

The Chamber and Small Business Development Center -
Your chamber continues to create strong service partnerships on behalf of the small business community in Beaverton. The chamber is privileged to partner with the Small Business Development Center- Portland Community College (SBDC-PCC), a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration. TheChamber hosts SBDC advisor, Jon-Michael Kowertz every first Wednesday of the month from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and third Wednesday from 1:00 to 4:00 PM for free and confidential, one-on-one business advising.

On-the-Job Training Reimbursements Available for Local Businesses
WorkSource Centers are currently offering reimbursements to support local businesses for providing On-the-Job Training (OJT) to their newly-hired employees. Through state and federal grants (via WorkSystems, Inc.), WorkSource is able to reimburse companies up to 50% of the wages for their new hires during the training period.
Hundreds of small and medium-sized companies throughout Washington and Multnomah Counties have utilized the OJT Program over the past few years to train and keep skilled, productive workers. This program has proven to be a very cost-effective way to develop talent for businesses that require unique or niche skill sets. It also benefits the economy by helping job seekers who may be otherwise highly-qualified for a job but for the lack of a couple of missing skills. Examples of successful OJT's in Washington County this past year have included a wide range of skilled occupations, such as warehouse workers, bookkeepers, field service technicians, electronics technicians, and software developers.
For more information about the OJT Program or to see if your business is eligible, contact your local WorkSource Center. Businesses located in Washington County, call 503-526-2712 (Alicia) or 503-612-4214 (Bryan). Businesses in Multnomah County, call 503-280-6633 (Rhonda) or 503-669-7112, ext. 250 (Miriam).

Is your organization prepared for the challenges these highly-experienced, technically-skilled boomers will create in their mass exit from the workforce? Join leading experts in the field of economics, law, small-business development, human resources management, and gerontology to prepare your company for what lies ahead. Keynote by Robert Romasco, AARP National Board President

Representing Business to Government...
Our Business Advocacy Council focuses on issues that directly impact businesses that most owners/managers do not have time to stay on top of but count on the Chamber to do so and be their voice.
NEXT MEETING: **February 6th, 2014. 7:30 - 8:30am
**Special Meeting and Tour of the Beaverton Police Department at Griffith Drive. Please contact Lorraine in advance if you'd like to join the council on this informational tour. You will need to complete a form in advance.
We meet monthly on the first Thursday at 7:30am - 8:30am in our down stairs conference room. Feel free to contact Lorraine if you have any questions. We'd love to have you.
All Business Advocacy Council Meetings are open to all members (appointed or not!). Question of the week: Pick 3 topics from the list below you are most interested in attending. Email Michelle with your selection. 1. Generations @ Work - Today, many organizations are finding four different generations interacting in the workplace: Traditionals, Baby Boomers, Gen Xers, and Milleniials. Each bring their own unique and sometimes differing perspectives, values and communication styles to the workday experience. In this class we will have a discussion and explore strategies for understanding and effectively managing the different generations.
2. Education Working: A Guide to 21st Century Careers - In a rapidly changing world, it is imperative that we are prepared to be successful in the 21st century workforce & beyond. In this "snapshot" of the growing careers for the 21st Century, we will provide you with ideas of how to capitalize on the knowledge and skills needed to be in front of the trends driving these industries. 3. Professional Trends - Trends are about change and every change has at its core, a "driver." Learn how to predict or identify a new trend and discover how to link your career goals to new trends & industries.
4. Project Management - Project Management continues to play an increasingly important role in project & organization success. Learn more about the Project Management Continuum and it's holistic view of the organization, project evaluation, & tracking. Discover the skill sets needed to be a successful Project Manager.
5. Time Management - Time is one of the most important resources that an employee can possess. It must be managed with the same diligence as money. This workshop will provide several tools and strategies to help recapture your day and get the job done more efficiently! Topics covered will include: Identifying your 3 time bandits, 3 time management methods to help you win back your day, and Simple tools to help overcome stress and procrastination.
6. Conflict Resolution - Conflict is based on interaction and can be driven by perceptions, not just by the objective situation. It begins and is sustained by the behaviors of the parties involved and their reactions to one another. In conflict resolution, communication is the key and it is important to talk to others and gather as much information and advice as possible.
We wish you and your family a wonderful New Year!! Thank you for all the memories in 2013 and we are excited as we look ahead to 2014.
Michelle
