Greetings!
When I am asked "What is the Beaverton Chamber? What do you do?", I share that we are the community CATALYST, CONVENER and CONNECTOR.
CATALYST: We are a broad-based business organization, representing over 600 businesses with 45,000 jobs in our area. We are the leaders of Beaverton that come together to work as the community catalyst. As the "Catalyst", our goal is to be the think tank that causes activity between all of the pieces of our community, precipitates change for the betterment of our community and we are the enthusiastic, friendly, and energetic promoters of Beaverton.
CONVENER: We are the only group or organization that has the resources that can bring together all players in the community (government and electeds, our schools, parks, police, fire agencies. business leaders) to work together and make positive change in our community. Last evening was a great example with our first Candidate's Training Workshop. We called together local experts to deliver a 2-hour session in an intimate and professional setting with past-electeds (Ryan Deckert & Cathy Stanton), campaign expert (Laura Terrill Patten), public relation expert (Dianne Danowski Smith), media expert (Christina Lent) - all to share their knowledge, insights and answer questions to a standing-room-only conference room with individuals considering serving their community. As the "Convener", our goal is to strengthen the local economy, attract jobs for our citizens, represent the interests of business to government, and ensure a high quality of life here in Beaverton.

CONNECTOR: We are the only group or organization that provides the volunteers and experiences(events) that are specifically focused on engaging business people (our members) multiple times per week to grow business relationships and provide visibility. As the "Connector" our goal is to promote and foster the free enterprise system, retain jobs, promote the community and increase networking and referrals.
Coffee Connections, Business After Hours, direct*CONNECT and more.
I recall a member who owned a restaurant and was unhappy with their membership because we "were not putting butts in seats" a few years back. I explained to her that was a misconception of our job or role. Our job is to open doors, build awareness, and increase exposure for a broad mix of members.
We can provide experiences for you to connect and build relationships, we can provide co-op advertising that saves you money, we can open doors to specific businesses you'd like to meet when we are asked to, and if you are struggling we do have folks that we can connect you to for mentoring - or visit the Sales Tune Up for some expert relationship building advice.
If you have any ideas for new connecting experiences we should be considering, I would love to hear them!
Finish your week strong & productively!
Sincerely,
Lorraine Clarno, President/CEO, ACE Beaverton Area Chamber of Commerce 503.350.2006

The Chamber and Small Business Development Center Partner in 2013
Your chamber continues to create strong service partnerships on behalf of the small business community in Beaverton. The chamber is privileged to partner with the Small Business Development Center- Portland Community College (SBDC-PCC), a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration. TheChamber hosts SBDC advisor, Jon-Michael Kowertz every first Wednesday of the month from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and third Wednesday from 1:00 to 4:00 PM for free and confidential, one-on-one business advising.
Chamber member & Ambassador, Lisa Chang, Hula Halau 'Ohana Holo'oko'a

"I was a pharmacist for 20 years and had no previous business education. Seven years ago I decided to quit pharmacy and focus on building my Hula and Hawaiian Entertainment business which I had been doing as a hobby 8 years prior. The first five years were some lean years. I used to drive to Lloyd Center to meet with a Small Business Development Center Adviser. Now we are lucky that the Beaverton Chamber has partnered with the SBDC and we have Jon-Michael Kowertz and team to meet with us in Beaverton. Jon-Michael is passionate about helping the small business owner and is knowledgeable in all areas of business with an expertise in marketing. Thank you Jon-Michael! I look forward to a continued partnership."
As additional resource for small businesses in Beaverton, owners and entrepreneurs can schedule an appointment for SBDC advising and conveniently meet at the Beaverton Chamber of Commerce. Candidates for advising may need help in business start-up, marketing, planning, financing, loan package development and more. Business advising is at no charge and does not require chamber membership. To learn more about how the SBDC can help your business or to arrange an appointment contact the chamber at 503-350-2007 or email Michelle.

Representing Business to Government...
Our Business Advocacy Council focuses on issues that directly impact businesses that most owners/managers do not have time to stay on top of but count on the Chamber to do so and be their voice.
NEXT MEETING: *November 14, 2013. Agenda: Alma Flores, City of Beaverton Economic Development Department, will seek input on possible food carts and pop up stores in Beaverton.
*Moved out one week from our normal schedule.
We meet monthly on the first Thursday at 7:30am - 8:30am in our down stairs conference room. Feel free to contact Lorraine if you have any questions. We'd love to have you.
All Business Advocacy Council Meetings are open to all members (appointed or not!). If you "get" the connection between monitoring regulations, ensuring business has input at the table on issues such as transportation, taxation and more...you should come and participate. All ideas and opinions are welcome.

Last week we had a wonderful time paddling on the Willamette river! 5 Chamber Members came out on what turned out to be a perfect day on the water. The experienced paddlers took it easy on us newbies as we learned how to use our entire body to create more power (and not pull a muscle). Many muscles were felt in the days that followed but we all agree it was well worth it. Thank you to Ada Boje for providing us this opportunity!

YEA! Young Entrepreneurs Academy
Meet the YEA! Class of 2014!

"YEA! Class of 2014 with Char Shinn, Oregonians Credit Union, our Presenting Sponsor"
This week the chamber kicked off a brand new program to build the next generation of CEO's. We are very honored to participate in the national movement of making entrepreneurship education available to youth all across our country. For the first time, our chamber, in partnership with the Beaverton School District and Portland Community College, is bringing this eight-month program to young entrepreneurs in the Beaverton Area. This program is designed to help sixth- through 12th-grade students start their own REAL businesses.
An inaugural class of 14 students from all walks of life sat beside their parents at Monday's Young Entrepreneurs Academy orientation. Some who have already ventured into businesses of their own. Tuesday, our amazing YEA! instructor Jon-Michael Kowertz led the class through fun getting to know each other activities and a very productive brainstorming session of business ideas.
This is the time when we need the support from businesses to help these Young Entrepreneurs succeed. Call or email Evelyn at 503 350 2004 if you would like to participate. We are looking for Graphic Designers, Attorneys, Accountants, Web Developers, Business Mentors, and YEA! Investor Panelists, etc.
