Leaders needed!

Individuals interested in serving on the Budget Committee need to live in the zones they will represent.
The School Board Zones do not entirely match school attendance areas. Zone maps are available on the District website. Candidates must also meet the following qualifications: be a qualified voter of the District, have lived in the District for one year and cannot be a Beaverton School District employee. The Budget Committee reviews the District's budget and recommends needed changes. The Committee conducts business in evening public meetings held monthly between January and June. The Budget Committee also approves the Budget Document and forwards it to the School Board for adoption by the end of June. Budget Committee members will be appointed by the School Board. Those who wish to apply should send a letter of interest and/or resume by Friday, November 1, 2013 to: Beaverton School District Communications & Community Involvement Department 16550 S.W. Merlo Road Beaverton, OR 97006 Or email to: community_involvement@beaverton.k12.or.us

The Chamber and Small Business Development Center Partner in 2013
Your chamber continues to create strong service partnerships on behalf of the small business community in Beaverton. The chamber is privileged to partner with the Small Business Development Center- Portland Community College (SBDC-PCC), a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration. TheChamber hosts SBDC advisor, Jon-Michael Kowertz every first Wednesday of the month from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and third Wednesday from 1:00 to 4:00 PM for free and confidential, one-on-one business advising.
Chamber member & Ambassador, Lisa Chang, Hula Halau 'Ohana Holo'oko'a

"I was a pharmacist for 20 years and had no previous business education. Seven years ago I decided to quit pharmacy and focus on building my Hula and Hawaiian Entertainment business which I had been doing as a hobby 8 years prior. The first five years were some lean years. I used to drive to Lloyd Center to meet with a Small Business Development Center Adviser. Now we are lucky that the Beaverton Chamber has partnered with the SBDC and we have Jon-Michael Kowertz and team to meet with us in Beaverton. Jon-Michael is passionate about helping the small business owner and is knowledgeable in all areas of business with an expertise in marketing. Thank you Jon-Michael! I look forward to a continued partnership."
As additional resource for small businesses in Beaverton, owners and entrepreneurs can schedule an appointment for SBDC advising and conveniently meet at the Beaverton Chamber of Commerce. Candidates for advising may need help in business start-up, marketing, planning, financing, loan package development and more. Business advising is at no charge and does not require chamber membership. To learn more about how the SBDC can help your business or to arrange an appointment contact the chamber at 503-350-2007 or email Michelle.

Representing Business to Government...
Our Business Advocacy Council focuses on issues that directly impact businesses that most owners/managers do not have time to stay on top of but count on the Chamber to do so and be their voice.
NEXT MEETING: *November 14, 2013. Agenda: Don Mazziotti, City of Beaverton Economic and Community Development Director to give an update on the BURA, proposed Health Care Clinic study, Enterprise Zone attraction and more.
*Moved out one week from our normal schedule.
We meet monthly on the first Thursday at 7:30am - 8:30am in our down stairs conference room. Feel free to contact Lorraine if you have any questions. We'd love to have you.
All Business Advocacy Council Meetings are open to all members (appointed or not!). If you "get" the connection between monitoring regulations, ensuring business has input at the table on issues such as transportation, taxation and more...you should come and participate. All ideas and opinions are welcome.

Michelle's Membership Corner
I had a great time at the Oregon State Chamber of Commerce-Washington Chamber of Commerce Executives Conference last week. I enjoyed sponging up all the great information provided and look forward to taking this information and embedding it in the Beaverton Chamber of Commerce to better the membership experience.
This Friday at the Bank of the West's Coffee Connection, we are going to have a wonderful 50/50 drawing. New Member Rachel Scherger, with the Portland Trail Blazers, is donating (4) 100 level tickets. Will you be the lucky winner!
We want to get your opinion! Help us take better care of you by answering a weekly question. On what day of the week would you like to see Business After Hours take place in 2014? Monday or Thursday?
email Michelle with your answer.
Interest Groups: You heard about it 2 weeks ago and now it's here. We are launching the Beaverton Chamber Interest Group. We are pretty certain there are chamber members who have similar interests. Why not go do things together. Yes, it's just like a meet-up group. Each week we will let you know what we are doing and you are welcome to join us. Visit our MeetUp page for more information on these events.
Saturday, November 2nd - Willamette Week Beer Pro/Am - 2PM to 6PM - Join Michelle Mason for a fun beer tasting experience.
Tickets are $25 and you can purchase them online or at the door. Please let Michelle know if you planning on joining by 5pm on Friday, November 1st and we will coordinate the place to meet. Visit the website for more information.
Sunday, November 3rd - Have you ever wanted to learn how to operate a Dragon Boat. You can learn from Ada Boje.
10AM to 11AM with a call time of 9:45AM Meet on the water side of the Riverplace Hotel by the flagpole just south of Tom McCall Waterfront Park. - Dragon Boat Meet Location $5 Per person (covers the boat rental) Email Ada to reserve your spot by Friday, 11/1, 4:00 pm
Wednesday, November 6th at 6pm - Pizza Night! - Pizzicato, 10719 SW Beaverton Hillsdale Hwy, Beaverton, OR 97005
Relax and unwind after surviving the first part of the week over some tasty pizza. To make it easy on everyone we will order a Cheese Pizza, Pepperoni Pizza and a family style salad. Everyone there will split the tab for these items. Any additional items (drinks, bread sticks, etc) will be on your own separate tab. No RSVP required but if you know you will be coming, please let Michelle know by noon on Wednesday so we can advise Pizzicato how many to expect.

YEA! Young Entrepreneurs Academy

Looking for the areas youngest Entrepreneurs!
Do you know a middle or high school student, who is interested in starting their own business- but has no idea on how to get the ball rolling? If so we're here to help them get their ideas off the ground and into motion.
The Beaverton Young Entrepreneurs Academy, or Beaverton YEA! is currently accepting nominations and applications for 2013-14 academic year from "all Beaverton area students". Applications are accepted, and student interviews are conducted, on a rolling basis. Beaverton YEA! will grant admission to a maximum of twenty four students annually. Applications for the 2013-14 academic year will be accepted until Oct 18th, or until such time as the class cap is achieved.
For more information, and to download an application, visit our website or call Evelyn Orr at 503 350 2004, email me.
The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) is a year-long program that teaches middle and high school students how to start and run their own, REAL businesses. Students brainstorm business ideas, decide if they want to work by themselves or as a team, write a business plan, pitch their plan to investors for funding, and actually launch their own business or social movement. All of the learning is real and experiential. Students leave the class as business owners, complete with a DBA and bank account!
Beaverton YEA! is held the Beaverton High School Computer Lab every Tuesday from 4-7pm, beginning in November 2013 and ending in June 2014.
