Leaders needed!

Individuals interested in serving on the Budget Committee need to live in the zones they will represent.
The School Board Zones do not entirely match school attendance areas. Zone maps are available on the District website. Candidates must also meet the following qualifications: be a qualified voter of the District, have lived in the District for one year and cannot be a Beaverton School District employee. The Budget Committee reviews the District's budget and recommends needed changes. The Committee conducts business in evening public meetings held monthly between January and June. The Budget Committee also approves the Budget Document and forwards it to the School Board for adoption by the end of June. Budget Committee members will be appointed by the School Board. Those who wish to apply should send a letter of interest and/or resume by Friday, November 1, 2013 to: Beaverton School District Communications & Community Involvement Department 16550 S.W. Merlo Road Beaverton, OR 97006 Or email to: community_involvement@beaverton.k12.or.us

Greetings!
"Beaverton is Open for Business".
Development 101 - Demystifying the Development Process -
This has been a mantra championed by our Mayor Denny Doyle for the past six years. Have you tried or wanted to try to get a new sign for your business, do some remodeling in your store front, thought of investing in Beaverton business property for development purposes? Whether a multi- million dollar challenge, or a simple wiring permit - navigating that process can be a challenge.
We have the solution! We want to connect you to the decision makers, introduce you to the players, and put the puzzle pieces together for you in a 2-half day workshop that will do just that. Learn more here and view the complete agenda to see how we will make this happen - November 7th and 8th. Register soon - limited to 25. $65 for two days, breakfast included both days.
ONLINE or by phone, 503.644.0123.
The week of October 21st I am looking very forward to attending my first US Chamber Government Affairs conference and Michelle will be attending her first Oregon State Chamber of Commerce conference. Lots of learning to be had and I'm confident great ideas will be coming back to be shared and incorporated into our 2014 year.
This past Wednesday, your board of directors amended the organizational bylaws and article V of the Articles of Incorporation. These amendments were to bring bylaws and articles current with the modernized business model we have been growing into over the past two decades. They voted to change the annual meeting to a chamber meeting in that will be called for with 10 days notice and with that a change the election of the board process. The petition process remains in place for all members. For details please feel free to read the updated bylaws in website newsroom and if you have any questions, I'm happy to take your call or email.
When considering board members our goal is to ensure they are representative of our membership - small, medium and large businesses and industry/occupations represented and in expertise.
Announcing the 2014 3-year term board members:
Troy Cunningham, Wells Fargo
Mark Fryburg, PGE
Christine Moore, Beaverton Valley Times
Dianne Danowski Smith, Publix NW
Ali Kavianian, Creative Planning
Officers:
Jerry Jones Jr., Lanphere Development & Construction, Chair Troy Cunningham, Wells Fargo, Chair-Elect
Ken Madden, Madden Industrial Craftsmen, Past-Chair Bryan Justrom, Justrom & Associates, Treasurer
Lorraine Clarno, President/CEO
The board will make up to 4 - 1year appointments at their regular December board meeting.
Cheers and we'll deliver the next issue of the eNews to your inbox on Halloween.
Read the complete eNews to find out how to put cash in your pocket and keep the Chamber growing. :) (Hint: Think Michelle)
Finish your week strong & productively!
Sincerely, Lorraine Clarno, President/CEO, ACE Beaverton Area Chamber of Commerce 503.350.2006

The Chamber and Small Business Development Center Partner in 2013
Your chamber continues to create strong service partnerships on behalf of the small business community in Beaverton. The chamber is privileged to partner with the Small Business Development Center- Portland Community College (SBDC-PCC), a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration. TheChamber hosts SBDC advisor, Jon-Michael Kowertz every first Wednesday of the month from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and third Wednesday from 1:00 to 4:00 PM for free and confidential, one-on-one business advising.
Chamber member & Ambassador, Lisa Chang, Hula Halau 'Ohana Holo'oko'a

"I was a pharmacist for 20 years and had no previous business education. Seven years ago I decided to quit pharmacy and focus on building my Hula and Hawaiian Entertainment business which I had been doing as a hobby 8 years prior. The first five years were some lean years. I used to drive to Lloyd Center to meet with a Small Business Development Center Adviser. Now we are lucky that the Beaverton Chamber has partnered with the SBDC and we have Jon-Michael Kowertz and team to meet with us in Beaverton. Jon-Michael is passionate about helping the small business owner and is knowledgeable in all areas of business with an expertise in marketing. Thank you Jon-Michael! I look forward to a continued partnership."
As additional resource for small businesses in Beaverton, owners and entrepreneurs can schedule an appointment for SBDC advising and conveniently meet at the Beaverton Chamber of Commerce. Candidates for advising may need help in business start-up, marketing, planning, financing, loan package development and more. Business advising is at no charge and does not require chamber membership. To learn more about how the SBDC can help your business or to arrange an appointment contact the chamber at 503-350-2007 or email Michelle.

Representing Business to Government...
Our Business Advocacy Council focuses on issues that directly impact businesses that most owners/managers do not have time to stay on top of but count on the Chamber to do so and be their voice.
NEXT MEETING: November 7, 2013. Agenda: 2014 Legislative Agenda Development
We meet monthly on the first Thursday at 7:30am - 8:30am in our down stairs conference room. Feel free to contact Lorraine if you have any questions. We'd love to have you.
All Business Advocacy Council Meetings are open to all members (appointed or not!). If you "get" the connection between monitoring regulations, ensuring business has input at the table on issues such as transportation, taxation and more...you should come and participate. All ideas and opinions are welcome.

Michelle's Membership Corner...
Referrals:
The Beaverton Chamber greatly appreciates the help we receive from our members in recruiting new members. To show our appreciation we have issued $25 vouchers for these referrals to be applied to future dues renewals. Effective immediately we will be issuing a $25 check for each new referral to chamber membership and direct*CONNECT membership. We will still issue up to 3-$25 checks for each category within a calendar year. However, the $25 will no longer come in the form of a voucher and instead will be a check for $25 to recognize your efforts in growing the Beaverton Area Chamber of Commerce.
Chamber Interest Groups:
Have you ever wanted to go for a hike but didn't have anyone who wanted to go with you? Have you wanted to go line dancing but you are the only one you know who likes country music? Do you want to learn how to get "creative" in making things from material purchased at the Habitat ReStore? The Chamber is in the business of CONNECTING. It doesn't have to be all work :). Beginning October 31st, see a new section of the e-News for activities that will be organized by the chamber you can participate in. Want to become an activity organizer? Please call or email Michelle letting her know of your interest.
Membership Renewals We have caught up to the 21st century!! Beginning with November renewals, membership renewal invoices will now be emailed instead of mailed. Please contact Michelle with updated email information for renewal notices.

Looking for the areas youngest Entrepreneurs!
Do you know a middle or high school student, who is interested in starting their own business- but has no idea on how to get the ball rolling? If so we're here to help them get their ideas off the ground and into motion.
The Beaverton Young Entrepreneurs Academy, or Beaverton YEA! is currently accepting nominations and applications for 2013-14 academic year from "all Beaverton area students". Applications are accepted, and student interviews are conducted, on a rolling basis. Beaverton YEA! will grant admission to a maximum of twenty four students annually. Applications for the 2013-14 academic year will be accepted until Oct 18th, or until such time as the class cap is achieved.
For more information, and to download an application, visit our website or call Evelyn Orr at 503 350 2004, email me.
The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) is a year-long program that teaches middle and high school students how to start and run their own, REAL businesses. Students brainstorm business ideas, decide if they want to work by themselves or as a team, write a business plan, pitch their plan to investors for funding, and actually launch their own business or social movement. All of the learning is real and experiential. Students leave the class as business owners, complete with a DBA and bank account!
Beaverton YEA! is held the Beaverton High School Computer Lab every Tuesday from 4-7pm, beginning in November 2013 and ending in June 2014.
