Greetings!
Hoping your day is filled with extra love, friendship & fun!
The Western Association of Chamber Executives annual conference was a great experience and wonderful opportunity to pick the brains of colleagues embracing change and making their chambers more and more relevant to today's workforce & entreprenurial economic climate we live in.
Did you know that by 2014, there will be more Generation X & Yers in the workforce than Boomers? I knew things were changing quickly - but WOW!
Here are a some things a talented professional Gen Xer shared with us about how the majority of the workforce and soon-to-be business owners view the world and membership:
- Stop talking about your history - who cares? Tell us where you are and where you are going!
- Be prepared to take us somewhere no other organization can take us.
- Networking is not a benefit - connecting us is - really, really connect us.
- Prove how advocacy benefits us cause we know we'll benefit one way or another.
- Stop treating "young professionals" as different or separate....we are NOW!
- Businesses/organizations must be authentic, trustworthy, and innovative if we are going to hang around.
We have to look at everything we do through different lenses and it is exciting.
A few snippits for business and organizations that are going to succeed:
- We must solve problems before they happen;
- We must be highly flexible course correctors;
- Have a high disregard for conventional thinking;
- Real leadership is managing change;
- Average is over done...History..whatever!
- This is a "Bring it Economy";
- Never rest, not for a minute, on what you've built;
- Push past "emotional equity" - the reason we don't make change......
Ideas are overflowing this week as staff, the executive committee and board start talking about how we prepare to lead change and benefit our members.
First up is YEA! The Beaverton Chamber, as we've shared the past three months, is preparing to be the first Chamber in Oregon to launch the Young Entreprenuers Academy. Absolutely Mission-centric and we are about to push off. Stay closely connected on this one :).
Again - Happy Valentines Day.
Finish your week strong & productively!
Sincerely, Lorraine Clarno, President/CEO, ACE Beaverton Area Chamber of Commerce 503.350.2006

Strengthening the Local Economy...
The Chamber and Small Business Development Center Partner in 2013
Your chamber continues to create strong service partnerships on behalf of the small business community in Beaverton. The chamber is privileged to partner with the Small Business Development Center- Portland Community College (SBDC-PCC), a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration. Starting in January 2013, the chamber will host SBDC advisor, Jon-Michael Kowertz every first Wednesday of the month from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and third Wednesday immediately following Business Matters from 1:00 to 4:00 PM for free and confidential, one-on-one business advising.
As additional resource for small businesses in Beaverton, owners and entrepreneurs can schedule an appointment for SBDC advising and conveniently meet at the Beaverton Chamber of Commerce. Candidates for advising may need help in business start-up, marketing, planning, financing, loan package development and more. Business advising is at no charge and does not require chamber membership. To learn more about how the SBDC can help your business or to arrange an appointment contact the chamber at 503-350-2007 or email Jessica.
Have you heard about the Greater Portland Export Initiative?
The economy of the Portland region is dependent to a large degree on our exports, and has been since its earliest days. In recent decades, the westside has come to play an key important role in the export economy, with firms like Intel, TriQuint Semiconductor, Electro Scientific Industries, Welch Allyn and hundreds of smaller companies leading the way. As part of the Export Initiatives we are seeking to double our region's export value in the next five years. This is a lofty goal, but it has huge pay-offs. Our region currently exports about $21 Billion - and for every additional $1 Billion in exports, about 5400 jobs will be created. Two upcoming workshops for businesses seeking to understand how to export or how to increase their exports.....read more.

Representing Business to Government...
Our Business Advocacy Council focuses on issues that directly impact businesses that most owners/managers do not have time to stay on top of but count on the Chamber to do so and be their voice.

Are we talking about you? Are you talking about your business?
Our social media efforts are all about our members - not the Chamber.
Each week up to 5 video testimonials are recorded and posted on our Youtube Channel, Facebook page, Pinterest Boards and Twitter............Are your ears burning? At Friday Coffee Connections we are consistently recording and posting all of these great members promoting and recognizing one another.
If you can't make it to a Coffee Connection to get on camera - or you are uncomfortable with that - please post your recommendation on our Facebook page.
Please take advantage of sharing your business news on our Facebook page as well. Key word - NEWS. Please don't populate it with blantant advertising, but use it to share you tips and expertise, employee changes, new product or service launches. That is what it is there for.

Shawn Freeman sweeps with Silver Level Recognition by Acura and 2012 Ron Tonkin Acura Salesperson of The Year.
Portland, OR, February 12, 2013
- Ron Tonkin Acura Sales Consultant Shawn Freeman was recently honored by the Acura division of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., for achieving Silver level status in the 2012 Council of Sales Excellence recognition program. This prestigious designation is bestowed only on Acura Sales Consultants who exemplify professionalism in all aspects of their sales performance.
The Acura Council of Sales Excellence program is an ongoing recognition initiative designed to encourage professional development and sales excellence throughout Acura dealerships across the country. The program recognizes Sales Consultants who excel at enhancing the client buying experience. Sales volume, client satisfaction, and professional knowledge are the program measures used to judge Sales Consultants' ability to best serve their Acura clients. The 2012 Silver level recipients exceeded their given objectives in all three categories and serve as tested leaders at their dealerships.
This is the 2nd year Shawn Freeman has been named a member of the Council of Sales Excellence. Freeman has been proudly serving clients at Ron Tonkin Acura in Portland since 2006.
In addition to the award from Acura, Mr. Freeman received the top honor of 2012 Salesperson of the Year for Ron Tonkin Acura. This award is based upon total sales volume for the calendar year 2012.
Ron Tonkin Acura Honored as a Dealership of Distinction
February 7, 2013 - Acura announced that Ron Tonkin Acura has been named a Dealership of Distinction - the most prestigious honor bestowed on an Acura dealership. The award recognizes the dealership's success in achieving a rigorous set of objectives established for the program year. Ron Tonkin Acura is proud to be one of only two Acura dealers that have earned this honor Twenty-One times.
The Dealership of Distinction award was established in 1987 to recognize Acura dealerships that have a passion for excellence and exemplify the brand's core values. Today the objectives of the program have been adjusted to align with Acura's goals of being an industry leader in the luxury market and setting the standard for client satisfaction. Award-winning dealerships are those that have not only met, but exceeded, clients' expectations.
"At Acura, we are proud of our Dealerships of Distinction. They exemplify the Acura brand by bringing it to life for our clients," says Jeff Conrad, vice president and general manager at Acura. "To earn the award requires an unwavering commitment to excellence by all members of the team. They have met the challenges set before them and deserve to be recognized for their achievement.
"For clients to recognize a Dealership of Distinction, Acura provides each winning dealership with a custom trophy and other materials to adorn the facility. Whether you are a current Acura client or new to the Acura brand, I encourage you to visit Ron Tonkin Acura to experience the superior service of an Acura Dealership of Distinction."
