Greetings!
We were excited to see City Councilors Mark Fagin and Cate Arnold sworn in Tuesday, January 8, at City Hall. Both Mark and Cate were the Chamber's endorsed candidates for their respective seats. Cate was also elected President of the Council. We are looking foward to seeing some over due decisions made, such as the move of general government services to the South Office Building now owned by the city, and forward movement on the very needed space for our police and safety personnel.
Have you heard about the Greater Portland Export Initiative?
The economy of the Portland region is dependent to a large degree on our exports, and has been since its earliest days. In recent decades, the westside has come to play an key important role in the export economy, with firms like Intel, TriQuint Semiconductor, Electro Scientific Industries, Welch Allyn and hundreds of smaller companies leading the way. As part of the Export Initiatives we are seeking to double our region's export value in the next five years. This is a lofty goal, but it has huge pay-offs. Our region currently exports about $21 Billion - and for every additional $1 Billion in exports, about 5400 jobs will be created. Two upcoming workshops for businesses seeking to understand how to export or how to increase their exports.....read more.
Your Chamber is once again hosting the reception at the 2013 State of the City Address with Mayor Doyle. We hope you can join us from 5:30 -7:30pm on January 23rd at the Arts & Communication Magnet Academy Performing Arts Center. Please RSVP here if you can join us.

Representing Business to Government...
Our Business Advocacy Council focuses on issues that directly impact businesses that most owners/managers do not have time to stay on top of but count on the Chamber to do so and be their voice.
NEXT MEETING: Thursday, February 7th, 2013
TOPIC - Chamber Day at the Capitol, March 1st & Mark Fagin, Beaverton's new city councilor
We meet monthly on the first Thursday at 7:30am - 8:30am in our down stairs conference room. Feel free to contact Lorraine if you have any questions. We'd love to have you.
All Business Advocacy Council Meetings are open to all members (appointed or not!). If you "get" the connection between monitoring regulations, ensuring business has input at the table on issues such as transportation, taxation and more...you should come and participate. All ideas and opinions are welcome.

"A few years ago my friend and I were looking for a new dentist. My friend had an appointment with Dr. Phillip Green of Beaverton Oral Surgeons. She asked him if he would refer a regular dentist. Without hesitation, he recommended Dr. Christine Chin of Cedar Hills Dental. We have been going to her ever since and both of us really like her. She is very competent, explains things well and doesn't promote procedures unless they are really necessary. The rest of the staff are very good at their jobs, as well, from the front desk personnel to the hygienists. Believe it or not, I actually look forward to going to the dentist. I highly recommend Cedar Hills Dental." Louise Pointer, National Funding Resource Associates
Powerful Thought of the week....
Seth Godin...
The facilities at DisneyWorld are clean. It's not a profit center, of course. They don't make them clean because they're going to charge you to use them. They make them clean because if they didn't, you'd have a reason not to come.
It turns out that just about everything we do involves cleaning the bathrooms. Creating an environment where care and trust are expressed. If you take a lot of time to ask, "how will this pay off," you're probably asking the wrong question. When you are trusted because you care, it's quite likely the revenue will take care of itself.

Join the Beaverton Better Buildings Challenge!
Buildings throughout our country waste energy because they are not efficient. This greatly contributes to the amount of fuel we purchase and to America's energy independence. Taking simple steps can reduce energy use, and the money saved can be spent on growing local businesses, investing in new technologies, and creating jobs in our community. The City of Beaverton, in collaboration with PGE, Energy Trust, and NW Natural invite you to join the Better Buildings Challenge and receive a free energy consultation and more.
