Greetings!

Your city council went into executive session Tuesday evening and came out making some solid progress on what City services may look like in the near future. They concluded, once adjourning from executive session, that they would move forward looking at sites for police and city administration only on parcels of land already owned by the city - current Griffith Park site, Westgate/South Office building and the Library. Discussion continues on whether they will decide on a "phased-in" full complex, or have separate facilities. There is concurrence that our police and safety center is the first priority.  More to come.

Strengthening the Local Economy...

Thanks to those of you that responsded with interest in our upcoming YEA! program to Evelyn this past week.

We are excited to work with the Beaverton School District and Portland Community College to put a focused program in place that helps our local students learn how to "Create a job....vs....Take a job" in 2013. Your board and our partners will be working a lot on this the next few months and at our board of directors strategic planning session in December.

More information will be available after the first of the year.

Our Biz-Ed Action Team and other business support will be crucial to seeing the program come to life! To learn more you can visit YEA!'s website.

If you would like to be put on a list to be kept informed, please email Evelyn. As this gets off the ground we will keep you up to date.

Representing Business to Government...

Our Business Advocacy Council focuses on issues that directly impact businesses that most owners/managers do not have time to stay on top of but count on the Chamber to do so and be their voice.

At September's BAC meeting, the council voted to Oppose Measure 85.

According to the 2012 Oregon Voter's Pamphlet, this measure, if passed will "Amends Constitution: Allocates corporate income/excise tax "kicker" refund to additionally fund K through 12 public education."   The Council did not discern that re-allocated money would go to schools, as might be assumed, since the bill language says the funds are to go to the broadly defined "K through 12 public education."    The Council also expressed concern about the continuing efforts to amend the Oregon constitution and questioned if this measure warranted such an action.

Your Chamber is an advocate for ComprehensiveTax Reform and believes the entire structure must be examined and looked at to provide a viable long-term solution to our school funding issues. The board of directors discussed the BAC's decision at their meeting this Wednesday expressly stated that the "bandaid" approach is not the way to go - but comprehensive tax reform is necessary and long-overdue. The Corporate Kicker should be looked at as well as the Individual Kicker and all other sources.

 NEXT MEETING: November 1st

TOPIC - Local Community & Economic Development Update - Alma Flores

Lobby floor conference room.

We meet monthly on the first Thursday at 7:30am - 8:30am in our down stairs conference room. Feel free to contact Lorraine if you have any questions. We'd love to have you.

All Business Advocacy Council Meetings are open to all members (appointed or not!). If you "get" the connection between monitoring regulations, ensuring business has input at the table on issues such as transportation, taxation and more...you should come and participate. All ideas and opinions are welcome.

Candidates:

City of Beaverton - Mayor Doyle, Mark Fagin, Catherine Arnold

State: District 27 - Tobias Read, District 28 - Manuel Castaneda, District 34 - Dan Mason

Commissioner of Labor & Industries - Bruce Starr

Measures:

Oppose: Measure 85 - "Corporate Kicker" redirect to K-12 Education. This is another bandaid approach to a broken school funding system. Complete tax reform must be examined and the language does not clearly designate the dollars to the classroom.

Support: Washington County Enhanced Sherrif Patrol Levy

Uberthons announces the Oregon Turkeython to be held on Thanksgiving Morning at Beaverton Town Square. The family running event includes 5k, 10k, 1k, and k races. The races are professionally timed by Uberthons using overhead RFID antennas that read chips attached to racing bibs. Race results are posted on the Internet as the runners and walkers cross the finish line. Famous Footwear is the title sponsor of the event. Other sponsors include Sports Authority, Oregon Health Clubs, The Fitness Studio, Acceleration Sports Medicine, Oroweat, Courtyard Marriott, Dickie Jo's, Mucho Gusto, and Yo My My Frozen Yogurt. The Turkeython comes to Beaverton for this 2nd annual event.   All course roads will be closed and well marked. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be present - and members of the Portland's Singing Christmas Tree will introduce the holiday season to Beaverton as they perform before the start of the race. A special recognition will be made to our Veterans.

The event benefits non-profit organizations including Westside Police Activities League, Portland Rescue Mission, Portland's Singing Christmas Tree, SHOC Foundation, Camp to Belong NW, Camp Rosenbaum, Tigard Community Back Pack Program, Bradley Angle, and Project Linus.

All Beaverton Area Chamber of Commerce members are invited to participate in the event by providing discount coupons, publicizing the event, volunteering as event directors, or participating as a company team in the running events.

While the Oregon Turkeython does not yet rival the Dallas, Texas or Sacramento, CA Thanksgiving runs, which each have over 26,000 participants, the Turkeython will surely grow and be a popular holiday event in downtown Beaverton for years to come.

If you are interested in promoting your business, or in helping with the event, review the webpage at http://www.uberthons.com/turkeython-sponsors and email [email protected], or call 503-516-6998. The event website is www.turkeython.com, and the event facebook page is www.facebook.com/oregonturkeython.
