Greetings!
A little over a month ago at IWCE (International Wireless Communications Expo) in Las Vegas, we introduced our new Viking VP900 portable radio - the Multi-Band for Everyone. The radio was very well received at IWCE and continues to generate much interest.
With the VP900, EFJohnson has addressed two of the biggest challenges in the development of multi-band radios described in the recent report published by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security:
- How do you keep the MBR (multi-band radio) as small and light as a single-band radio?
- How can you keep the cost of a MBR comparable to the cost of a single-band radio?
Our new Viking VP900 is the smallest multi-band portable radio on the market AND is half the cost of comparable radios. Even with the small size and low cost, the VP900 still has all of the features you expect from a multi-band portable. It is equipped with the loudest audio, the industry's leading noise cancellation, and optional internal GPS. It also includes standard features such as immersion, top display, and voice annunciation.
I am pleased to offer an affordable multi-band solution to public safety users - something that has not previously been available as a mass market offering. The introduction of the Viking VP900 Multi-Band portable reinforces EFJohnson's position as a one-stop resource for P25. Along with our unique ATLAS system solutions, our Viking subscribers meet the needs of police, fire, EMS and other mission critical users.
Sincerely,
Andy Adams, CEO

For users who do not require a multi-band solution, our Viking VP600 single-band portable continues to be a top choice. EFJohnson has recently been awarded contracts that designate them as a P25 public safety radio supplier for state and local agencies across Harris County, Texas and Sedgwick County, Kansas.
Harris County, Texas currently operates on a Motorola SmartZone system, but will eventually migrate to a P25 Phase II system. They chose the Viking VP600 radios because of their remarkable versatility in migrating from analog SMARTNET/SmartZone to digital P25 operation while maintaining seamless public safety communications during and after the migration. The VP600s also offer an upgrade path to Phase II with a TDMA software upgrade capability. "EFJohnson's Viking radios worked great on the Harris County SMARTNET/SmartZone system. We anticipated that each product would perform as well as the other, but we never expected to see the Viking measurably outperform the other product," said Mike Mulligan, deputy fire chief for Harris County's Atascocita Volunteer Fire Department.
Sedgwick County, Kansas selected the Viking radios as replacements for their legacy subscribers to complete their P25 upgrade. The Viking radios meet the needs of both their public safety users as well as their public works agencies by offering a cost effective solution with advanced capabilities. With EFJohnson's Armada™ Fleet Management Software, they are also now able to quickly and efficiently configure their entire fleet of Viking radios.
Agencies who initially think they are limited to more expensive options are finding that the Viking radios are the best fit for their needs and offer industry leading performance, high end features, and an unmatched value. The celebration of Earth Day last month was a reminder that we all play a role in preserving the environment. In an effort to advance our green business practices, EFJohnson is excited to announce our support of the Call2RecycleŽ rechargeable battery recycling program.
We will begin collecting all of our used rechargeable batteries and ship them to Call2Recycle's sorting and processing facility where they will salvage the metals for reuse and responsibly recycle the remaining components to make new batteries and stainless steel products. We will also facilitate the distribution of the free collection boxes to any EFJohnson dealers and customers who are interested in becoming a collection site.
Since the first collections in 1996, Call2Recycle, headquartered in Atlanta, GA, has diverted 70 million pounds of batteries from landfills in North America. We hope you will join us in supporting this initiative. To learn more about Call2Recycle, click here.

The West, Texas fertilizer plant explosion that took place on Wednesday evening, April 17 hit close to home for EFJohnson. West is approximately 85 miles south of the EFJohnson corporate headquarters in Irving, Texas. The explosion resulted in the loss of 15 lives and over 200 more people with injuries. The majority of the people killed were firefighters. EFJohnson employees are planning a fundraiser to contribute directly to the West Volunteer Fire Department. A disaster relief fund has also been established through the Waco Foundation for the sole benefit of the victims and relief efforts in West, Texas. To contribute to the fund, please click here.
