Attention 7th Grade Students & Parents: Washington, D.C. Trip Information MeetingInterested in spending your Mini-Course making history come alive while creating fantastic memories with your friends next year? Come join us on the Washington, D.C. trip and you will have memories to last a lifetime. If you are interested in learning more about the trip, please join us at an informational meeting on Monday, June 6, at 6:30 p.m. in the Hillview PAC. For more information, contact Carolyn Malquist. Sign up forms and FAQ sheet available in the Hillview front office.
Bike Safety
We have received numerous reports these past few weeks about unsafe Hillview bicyclists - riding in large groups, weaving in and out of traffic, and wearing no helmets. Please remind your students to wear their helmets and follow all rules of the road. Bicyclists should ride on the right side of the road, single file, in the designated bike lane, and should obey all traffic signs.
Help Needed for 8th Grade Graduation Event
Parents are needed to help with set up for the graduation event and to work shifts at the event. There are separate sign-up pages for Set Up Help (before the event) and Day of Event helpers. We especially need 2 or 3 volunteers with NO graduating students to help with vendors and security during the graduation ceremony (5:00 - 6:30 p.m.). If you are considering coordinating this event next year, this would be a great job for you! (Please sign up on the Grad Help - Day of Event page.)
Set up will take place beginning Friday night, June 10, and continue up to the event. It will take the efforts of many to transform the school gym into a party-worthy venue. If you can help with set up, please visit the Hillview Graduation Event: Set Up Help sign up page. We will also need parents to help at coat check, staff games and prepare and serve food. Traditionally, 7th grade parents help at the event, but 8th grade parents are strongly encouraged! Note that if your kid doesn't want you there, we have jobs where you won't encounter any students or we can also offer a disguise. If you can help out, please visit the Grad Help - Day of Event sign up page. Thanks for your help! If you have any questions please contact Kristi or Joel.
Yearbooks: Time is Running Out
Please either go online and purchase one, have your student bring a check made out to Hillview to Mrs. Fichou in the Student Center from 9:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. or drop by the office and hand off your check to either Mrs. Bell or Mrs. Bosch. The cost is $45. **If you have an ASB card, you already have a yearbook coming!

Fall Volunteer Opportunities at Hillview Even though you are up to your eyeballs in end-of-the-school-year chaos, we would like you to think briefly about next year. WE NEED YOU! As you probably know, there are many areas in which you can volunteer at Hillview, contribute to our award-winning community, and connect in a more meaningful way with your child's school. The teachers rely on the Academy Parents to help coordinate academy-wide activities and assist in a variety of ways inside and outside the classroom. We also need volunteers to help with our Back-to-School Luau set up and check in; serve hot lunch; assist in the library, and, at the Book Fair; help coordinate staff-appreciation events as well as assist with many other activities. If you are interested in helping out at Hillview, in any capacity, in the Fall, please send an email here. Best of luck with the last few days of school and we look forward to seeing you again in September!
End-of-Year Teacher and Staff Gift Fund Wondering how to recognize your child's teacher at the end of the school year? At Hillview, we have a tradition of gifting to the staff as a community. The school community is encouraged to contribute to a centralized Teacher/Staff Gift Fund organized by parent volunteers. All proceeds are used to buy gift cards for the entire Hillview team. The benefits of this approach are:
- It's what the teachers and staff prefer. With gift cards, they can pick out something they really want or need;
- No one is overlooked. The Gift Fund recognizes more than 80 Hillview employees, including academy teachers, elective teachers, specialists, and staff; and
- It's easy! Just make a contribution, and the committee does the rest. Gift cards are delivered on the last day of school on behalf of the entire Hillview community.
Due to issues with tax regulations and Paypal policies, we're unable to accept online donations, but you can contribute to this fantastic program by making out a check to Amy Boyle. Please drop off your payment in the school office, or mail it to Amy Boyle c/o Hillview Middle School, 1100 Elder Avenue, Menlo Park, CA 94025. If you have questions or would like additional information, please contact Kate Kennedy.

Parent Volunteers Needed to Help with Hawkapalooza
What better way to celebrate the last day of school than with Hawkapalooza? Come one, come all! We need parent volunteers to help manage the lines and run the games - all of which are easy to understand and fun to run. Please sign up here or contact Nancy Witeck to help us on Tuesday, June 14.
All Books are Due. Please help us get all of our books back so we can complete our inventory.
Overdrive eBooks and Audiobooks available all summer! Even to 8th graders. We've told all the students, but they could always use reminders from you. Directions for how to download eBooks are available here or students can bring personal devices to the library for help. Kindle Lottery: Students who wish to check out a kindle for the summer will find directions for entering our lottery here. Summer reading: Packets have gone home to most returning students. All information can be found on our Summer Reading Page.
Homework Center is now done for the year. The library will be open only for a few minutes after school each day.
Music News
Audition Music for the 2016 - 2017 Jazz Band is now available. Come to the Music Room to pick up yours.
Intramural Sports have concluded for the school year. See you in the fall.
After-School SportsAll spring sports have now come to a close. We thank and congratulate players and coaches for their efforts. Special thanks to the parent volunteers who supported teams with rides, treats, coaching, etc. For families who may have any after-school sports jerseys at home, please return them to the Hillview office since there are still some outstanding. We thank you for your cooperation.
Tournament Team Basketball and Volleyball
Next year will be the final year of the Tournament Team Program. The PTO and Mr. Bell made this decision earlier in the school year. A meeting was held last Tuesday to discuss the format of next year's program. Lists of players interested in each program were created. At this time, we have the following numbers of players: Volleyball - 8 players; Girls Basketball - 6 players; and Boys Basketball - 13 players. We assume there will be more interest because some were unable to attend the meeting. If there is not enough interest when tryouts begin, the program will not take place. Volleyball tryouts will be held close to the first day of school on September 1. There also will be voluntary summer open session workouts prior to the beginning of school. Basketball tryouts typically take place during Conference Week.
Please direct questions regarding any of the sports programs to Harry Bell, (650) 483-4049.
