ACTION REQUIRED! Parents of Current 6th Graders - Whooping Cough (Pertussis) Tdap Vaccination
All incoming 7th graders in the 2016-17 school year are required by law to provide proof of a whooping cough booster, or Tdap shot (Td does not meet the requirement). Students will not be admitted to school if proof is not received before the first day of school.

To avoid exclusion on the first day of school, please bring an updated copy of your child's immunization record showing proof of Tdap to the school office now. Do not mark or highlight this record. If there is a verified medical condition against vaccination, you are required to provide the school with a doctor's written statement. The information required in this statement may be found in the FAQ section on the Shots for School website. Acceptable proof of immunization includes:
  • print-out or copy of immunization record from your child's clinic or physician's office;
  • a copy of the yellow immunization record; or
  • a certification of Tdap booster notice from your child's clinic, physician's office or pharmacy.
All of these documents must have your child's name, date of birth, the date Tdap was administered and a stamp, or physician's signature, from the clinic. For more information about the law and whooping cough, visit shotsforschool.org, or contact Nancy McMahon, Health Services Assistant at nmcmahon@mpcsd.org or (650) 321-7140, x5912.

Attention 7th Grade Students & Parents: Washington, D.C. Trip Information Meeting
Interested in spending your Mini-Course making history come alive while creating fantastic memories with your friends next year? Come join us on the Washington, D.C. trip and you will have memories to last a lifetime. If you are interested in learning more about the trip, please join us at an informational meeting on Monday, June 6 at 6:30 p.m., in the Hillview PAC. For more information, contact Carolyn Malquist. Sign up forms and FAQ sheet available in the Hillview front office.

Bike Safety
We have received numerous reports these past few weeks about unsafe Hillview bicyclists - riding in large groups, weaving in and out of traffic, wearing no helmets. Please remind your students to wear their helmets and follow all rules of the road. Bicyclists should ride on the right side of the road, single file, in the designated bike lane, and should obey all traffic signs.
Marsh Road Closure Beginning May 31
The Town of Atherton plans to close Marsh Road from May 31 to August 11, between Middlefield Road and Fair Oaks Avenue, in order to replace the Atherton Channel walls and floor. A detour plan with roadway signage plan information can be downloaded here. The closure of Marsh Road will impact traffic throughout the area, and will limit access to Encinal and Laurel schools. Additional information on impacts to our school busing service will be communicated to parents. Please be patient and provide extra time to reach your destinations during this time. Click here for more information.

Yearbooks: Time is Running Out
Please either go online and purchase one, have your student bring a check to Mrs. Fichou in the Student Center or drop by the office and hand off your check to either Mrs. Bell or Mrs. Bosch. The cost is $40. As of June 1, we will open up any leftovers to sell to our amazing staff members. **If you have an ASB card, you already have a yearbook coming!

Fall Volunteer Opportunities at Hillview
Even though you are up to your eyeballs in end-of-the-school-year chaos, we would like you to think briefly about next year. WE NEED YOU!

As you probably know, there are many areas in which you can volunteer at Hillview, contribute to this award-winning community, and connect in a more meaningful way with your child's school. The teachers rely on the Academy Parents to help coordinate academy-wide activities and assist in a variety of ways inside and outside the classroom. We also need volunteers to help with our Back-to-School Luau / check in, serve hot lunch, assist in the library and at the book fair, to help coordinate staff-appreciation events as well as assist with many other activities.

If you are interested in helping out at Hillview in any capacity in the Fall, please send an email here.

Best of luck with the last few days of school and we look forward to seeing you again in September!

End-of-Year Teacher and Staff Gift Fund
Wondering how to recognize your child's teacher at the end of the school year? At Hillview, we have a tradition of gifting to the staff as a community. The school community is encouraged to contribute to a centralized Teacher/Staff Gift Fund organized by parent volunteers. All proceeds are used to buy gift cards for the entire Hillview team. The benefits of this approach are:
  • it's what the teachers and staff prefer. With gift cards, they can pick out something they really want or need;
  • no one is overlooked. The Gift Fund recognizes more than 80 Hillview employees, including academy teachers, elective teachers, specialists, and staff; and
  • it's easy! Just make a contribution, and the committee does the rest.  Gift cards are delivered on the last day of school on behalf of the entire Hillview community.
Due to issues with tax regulations and Paypal policies, we're unable to accept online donations, but you can contribute to this fantastic program by making out a check to Amy Boyle. Please drop off your payment in the school office, or mail it to Amy Boyle c/o Hillview Middle School, 1100 Elder Avenue, Menlo Park, CA 94025. If you have questions or would like additional information, please contact Kate Kennedy.

PTO Volunteer Luncheon

Please join us on May 31, from 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., in the Hillview PAC for a luncheon to celebrate all of the volunteers at Hillview. We will also honor this year's Golden Oak and Service Award winners. Please RSVP here by May 24 so that we can get an accurate head count.

Can You Donate Water Jugs for Hawkapalooza and ASB Events?
ASB is in need of donations of 10-15 three or five gallon plastic water jugs! We would not be able to return these as we will be modifying them, so no loaners please. If you can donate a three or five gallon water jug to our supply cabinet for ASB for Hawkapalooza and upcoming 2016-2017 events, please email Mr. Darmanin. Thank you!

Parent Volunteers Needed to Help with Hawkapalooza
What better way to celebrate the last day of school than with HAWKAPALOOZA? Come one, come all! We need parent volunteers to help manage the lines and run the games - all of which are easy to understand and fun to run. Please sign up here or contact Nancy Witeck to help us on Tuesday, June 14!

Sports
Intramural Sports
Intramural Sports have concluded.

Tournament Team Basketball and Volleyball
Next year will be the final year of the Tournament Team Program. The PTO and Mr. Bell made this decision earlier in the school year. For next year, however, there will be a meeting in the Hillview PAC on Tuesday, May 31, at 6:30 p.m. for interested families. 8th grade girls will be eligible for tournament team volleyball and 8th grade girls and boys will be eligible for tournament team basketball. This meeting is for the parents only, not the players. For volleyball, with school starting late and Burgess League starting early, both seasons will run simultaneously.

Please direct questions regarding any of the sports programs to Harry Bell, (650) 483-4049.

Schoolhouse Rocks Run: Results, Photos and Thanks!
Congratulations to our over 1,400 runners and walkers in last Sunday's Schoolhouse Rocks 5K, presented by Nelson Roberts Investment Advisors. It was fantastic to see our school community come together for a fun morning.

Encinal's Nicholas Keller is our Fastest Teacher with a time of 23:21:2. Congratulations, Mr. Keller! Jonathon Bunt achieved Fastest Overall Male with a time of 17:52 minutes. Fastest Overall Female was Tori Borish with a time of 19:49:6 minutes. To view your race results visit our Schoolhouse Rocks 5K Facebook page. View and download race day photos here, generously donated by Douglas Fairbairn Photography.

Thank you to our dozens of volunteers who helped managed this great community event on race day and at packet pickup. We could not have done it without your help. More than one runner even gave up their spots to help serve as course monitors so the run could go ahead. Thank you!

A special thank you to Krista Skehan and the team at Personify who did an amazing job creating our new run branding. We also cannot forget WL Butler Construction who provided a very cool 1968 Pontiac GTO convertible to pace our runners around the course. And finally, thank you to the fun team of organizers who volunteered their time in the weeks and months leading up to last Sunday. The race was powered by the dedicated energy of the following people in our school community:

Co-chairs: Tara Moeller and Steve Tonsfeldt
Organizing Committee: Jennifer Bartle, Page Curtin, Ben Ewers, Ken Flaum, Krista Glotzbach, Calla Griffith, Alka Gupta, Danielle Hayes, Susannah Hill, David Korn, Domonique Matthews, Liliana Perazich, and Tiffaney Quintana
School Ambassadors: Kristi Cannon, Amy Coolican, Amy Courson, Jennifer Dahmus, Kim Hinshaw, Julie Nelson, and Shelley Winters

Thank you again for your incredible support of our Schoolhouse Rocks 5K. See you next year!

Thanks to Our Realtor and Business Partners
We want to take the opportunity to shout out some appreciation to just a few of our many realtor and business partners in the community. Thank you for your support!
