ACTION REQUIRED! Parents of Current 6th Graders - Whooping Cough (Pertussis) Tdap Vaccination
All incoming 7th graders in the 2016-17 school year are required by law to provide proof of a whooping cough booster, or Tdap shot (Td does not meet the requirement). Students
will not be admitted to school if proof is not received before the first day of school.

To avoid exclusion on the first day of school, bring an updated copy of your child's immunization record showing proof of Tdap to the school office now. Do not mark or highlight this record. If there is a verified medical condition against vaccination, you are required to provide the school with a doctor's written statement. The information required in this statement may be found in the FAQ section on the Shots for School website. Acceptable proof of immunization includes:
  • print-out or copy of immunization record from your child's clinic or physician's office;
  • a copy of the yellow immunization record; or
  • a certification of Tdap booster notice from your child's clinic, physician's office or pharmacy.
All of these documents must have your child's name, date of birth, the date Tdap was administered and a stamp, or physician's signature, from the clinic. For more information about the law and whooping cough, visit shotsforschool.org, or contact Nancy McMahon, Health Services Assistant at nmcmahon@mpcsd.org or (650) 321-7140, x5912.

Congratulations, Mr. Haug!
Hillview has a new Hawk! Principal Willy Haug and his wife, Heather, welcomed their beautiful daughter Abigail Genevieve Hamilton Haug at 10:43 a.m. on Thursday, May 19. Abigail is a healthy, happy 8 lbs, 7 oz and 20 inches. Mr. Haug will be enjoying full-time fatherhood for the next 2 weeks, and will return to school on Monday, June 6. Welcome to the Hillview family, Abigail!

Marsh Road Closure Beginning May 31
The Town of Atherton plans to close Marsh Road from May 31 to August 11, between Middlefield Road and Fair Oaks Avenue, in order to replace the Atherton Channel walls and floor. A detour plan with roadway signage plan information can be downloaded here. The closure of Marsh Road will impact traffic throughout the area, and will limit access to Encinal and Laurel schools. Additional information on impacts to our school busing service will be communicated to the parents. Please be patient and provide extra time to reach your destinations during this time. Click here for more information.

Yearbooks: Time is Running Out
Please either go online and purchase one, have your student bring a check to Mrs. Fichou in the Student Center or drop by the office and hand off your check to either Mrs. Bell or Mrs. Bosch. The cost is $40. As of June 1, we will open up any leftovers to sell to our amazing staff members. **If you have an ASB card, you already have a yearbook coming!

End-of-Year Teacher and Staff Gift Fund
Wondering how to recognize your child's teacher at the end of the school year? At Hillview, we have a tradition of gifting to the staff as a community. The school community is encouraged to contribute to a centralized Teacher/Staff Gift Fund organized by parent volunteers. All proceeds are used to buy gift cards for the entire Hillview team. The benefits of this approach are:
  • it's what the teachers and staff prefer. With gift cards, they can pick out something they really want or need;
  • no one is overlooked. The Gift Fund recognizes more than 80 Hillview employees, including academy teachers, elective teachers, specialists, and staff; and
  • it's easy! Just make a contribution, and the committee does the rest.  Gift cards are delivered on the last day of school on behalf of the entire Hillview community.
Due to issues with tax regulations and Paypal policies, we're unable to accept online donations, but you can contribute to this fantastic program by making out a check to Amy Boyle. Please drop off your payment in the school office, or mail it to Amy Boyle c/o Hillview Middle School, 1100 Elder Avenue, Menlo Park, CA 94025. If you have questions or would like additional information, please contact Kate Kennedy.

Please join us on May 31, from 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., in the Hillview PAC for a luncheon to celebrate all of the volunteers at Hillview. We will also honor this year's Golden Oak and Service Award winners. Please RSVP here by May 24 so that we can get an accurate head count.

Relay for Life Thank You
Relay for Life - Hillview Edition Raises $38,000 for the American Cancer Society!
The field looked great with all the lights and luminaria on display. Around 200 people participated in the relay. The excitement was contagious; kids walked, ran, sprinted, and skipped around the track, collecting beads for every lap. Everyone, including teachers, danced to their favorite jams in the night.

There are many people to thank:
  • our fantastic and dedicated Hillview students, who attended the Relay meetings, raised money (thank you, parents, extended families and friends), and enthusiastically showed up to the event in their team gear;
  • the Stephen Curry Fan Club (A.K.A. the fearless teachers & staff team) led by Mimi Nguyen;
  • every single one of you who made a financial donation to the Relay or contributed in other meaningful ways;
  • participants from M-A, Encinal, and Oak Knoll;
  • volunteers who helped set up, run the event, and clean up. Special thanks to the Waldron family for setting up the lights; without them this event would not be what it is to the students; and
  • special thanks to Robin Buckley, for organizing this event two years in a row, with the support of Elizabeth Ouren and Gina Parks!
Sports
Intramural Sports
Intramural basketball will continue during lunchtime for its final week.

After-School Sports
All Spring sports have now concluded. We thank and congratulate all players and coaches for their efforts. Special thanks to the parent volunteers who supported the teams with rides, treats, coaching, and more. For any families who still have an after-school sports jersey at home, please return them to the Hillview office. Some of the highlights from Spring sports include Tennis Team Varsity A playing in the finals, Tennis Team Varsity B reaching the playoffs, and the Boys Volleyball Team reaching the playoffs.

Tournament Team Basketball and Volleyball
Next year will be the final year of the Tournament Team Program. The PTO and Mr. Bell made this decision earlier in the school year. For next year, however, there will be a meeting in the Hillview PAC on Tuesday, May 31, at 6:30 p.m. for interested families. 8th grade girls will be eligible for tournament team volleyball and 8th grade girls and boys will be eligible for tournament team basketball. This meeting is for the parents only, not the players.

Please direct questions regarding any of the sports programs to Harry Bell, (650) 483-4049.

Required Summer Reading for Incoming Menlo-Atherton 9th Graders
Every incoming 9th grader is required to read Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card (ISBN#: 978-0-8125-5070-2). Kepler's in downtown Menlo Park will be selling the book in their Summer Reading Section for your convenience. At check out please mention M-A, and the English Department will receive a portion of the proceeds. Questions? Please email Dori Britts.

8th Graders: Study Mandarin at M-A!
Did you know that 900 million people speak Mandarin? Learn to converse with them, and get to know a country and people with a 5,000-year history.

Are you interested in learning the language, but daunted by the perception that Mandarin is too difficult?  While European languages are more familiar and a bit easier to learn for Native English speakers, there is difficulty in any natural human language. Once you get used to the tones and character writing, Mandarin becomes much easier. You are not expected to become fluent in a short period of time; the goal is for students to enjoy the process of building their language skills day by day. Note also that the homework load you receive follows the M-A rigor chart (20 minutes for Chinese I-III; 30 minutes for Chinese IV and above).

Please contact Mandarin teacher, Ms. Wei, with any questions about studying Mandarin at M-A. The registration deadline is May 27. You may add or change an elective option when you complete your online M-A information update per the instructions that were mailed home this week. You may also contact Silvia Torres Garza, head guidance counselor at Menlo-Atherton or call (650) 322-5311, ext. 50139, with questions on registration.

Ms. Wei looks forward to seeing you in her Mandarin classes...it's going to be fun!

Announcing Recipients of the Jeanie Ritchie Grant
We are very excited to announce the 2016-2017 recipients of the Jeanie Ritchie Grant! Please congratulate these amazing teachers when you see them! Thank you to everyone who donates to MPAEF and to all of the teachers among us who go above and beyond to make our school district the very best!

This year's Hillview Recipients are:
Nicholas Lera: Genius Hour
Maia Bromberg: Three Little Pigs House Project
Amy Kingsley: Speaking with the World

District teachers have been applying for Jeanie Ritchie grants for over 25 years. Each year, teachers with unique teaching concepts prepare a comprehensive grant and present their idea to the Jeanie Ritchie committee who evaluate the grant to see if it meets the program's three key qualities of innovation, creativity and enrichment.

Congratulations to this year's recipients and thank you for being amazing role models of innovation and hard work!

Congratulations to all our runners and walkers who completed today's run! Our 5K runners can check your results here.
