Important Annual Hillview Parent Survey - Please complete by Sunday
Parents, it is time for our annual Site Council Survey. Even though we still have half a trimester remaining, collecting feedback now will allow us to analyze it before the year ends, informing our planning for 2016 - 17, or even taking action this year. Your feedback is crucial to our continuous improvement! Please take this opportunity to share your valuable viewpoint, provide constructive suggestions for areas of growth, and/or highlight strengths. Click here to complete the survey anytime through May 15.
The survey is quite comprehensive, addressing school climate, experience in academic courses, physical education, electives, the effectiveness of our support programs, and even Mini-Courses. We won't try to kid you, it will not take "only 15 minutes," but the time you spend on it will be extremely helpful to us in identifying areas where we can grow and better serve the needs of our students and families.
All survey responses are anonymous. These responses will be reviewed by the Hillview Site Council, including Principal Willy Haug, Associate Principal Mary Martin and Assistant Principal Danielle O'Brien, to aid in making Hillview the best possible school it can be for our children. Thank you in advance for your participation. Questions? Contact Site Council President Elizabeth Ouren or Principal Willy Haug.
Volunteer for the 6th Grade Greek Olympics. The PE Department will host the annual 6th Grade Olympics Games during 6th grade PE classes on May 24, 25 and 26. Volunteers will help facilitate events, ensure athlete safety, and time and measure individual events. Please sign up here.

End of Year Teacher and Staff Gift Fund Wondering how to recognize your child's teacher at the end of the school year? At Hillview, we have a tradition of gifting to the staff as a community. The school community is encouraged to contribute to a centralized Teacher/Staff Gift Fund organized by parent volunteers. All proceeds are used to buy gift cards for the entire Hillview team. The benefits of this approach are:
- It's what the teachers and staff prefer. With gift cards, they can pick out something they really want or need.
- No one is overlooked. The Gift Fund recognizes more than 80 Hillview employees, including academy teachers, elective teachers, specialists, and staff.
- It's easy! Just make a contribution, and the committee does the rest. Gift cards are delivered on the last day of school on behalf of the entire Hillview community.
You can contribute to this fantastic program by making out a check to Amy Boyle. Please drop your payment in the school office, or mail it to:

6th / 7th Grade Dance
This special dance takes place on Friday, May 13, from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. in the Hillview Pac. This is our 6th graders' very first opportunity to attend a middle school dance! This year's theme is a "Hillview Beach Bash" and your 8th grade Hillview ASB will be wearing their favorite beach attire and suggest students do the same to get in on the fun (dress code applies). For boys and girls who want to get in on the theme, we encourage board shorts, Hawaiian attire, and comfortable dance shoes. If it looks like a chilly night, of course, feel free to get creative with the theme and/or wear what is comfortable. For 6th grade parents, dances at Hillview are never formal and don't require anything fancy, although some students do enjoy dressing up a little bit and that is also allowed as long as it meets our dress for success norms found in the Handbook. Dressing in theme is optional, but encouraged, to build class spirit and camaraderie.
Tickets will available for discounted pre-sale Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at lunch for $5 (ASB card holders) and $7 (non-ASB card holders). They will also be on sale at the door for the full price of $8. We are piloting a new ticketing system that involves scanning a digital dance ticket your child's student ID card, which is required for dance entry. All Hillview students are be required to bring his/her ID to attend the dance. If your child lost his/her ID, please see Mrs. Fichou in the student store at recess or lunch or email her for more information on replacement cards. We do have the ability to look up students temporarily and issue paper dance tickets, but the sooner we know, the better.
For those new to Hillview dances, our dance doors open at 6:30 p.m. The dance ends promptly at 8:30 p.m. Please be on time to pick up! Students who show up after 7:00 p.m. must have a parent escort them inside, and students who wish to leave earlier than 8:30 p.m. must have a parent meet them in the PAC lobby. Students should bring money for snacks and drinks. We also have a free coat check service for small bags and loose items. Lastly, we have a game room for students who wish take a break or socialize with their friends instead of dancing. We encourage all students to give it a shot! Of course, no dance is possible without chaperones. So, if you would like to chaperone the dance, please contact Nancy Witeck or click here to sign up. Hillview Relay for Life Twenty-seven teams of students and staff from Hillview, Encinal, Oak Knoll and M-A will walk the track at M-A to benefit the American Cancer Society (ACS) on Friday, May 13, 9:00 p.m. to midnight (after the 6th/7th grade dance). Teams are raising awareness of ACS and raising funds to help research cures for cancers and services to support those battling cancer. All students who wish to participate, or watch, must have a waiver signed by a parent to be at the event. Donations to teams are welcome. Hillview Night at the Earthquakes' Avaya Stadium On May 11, come out and support Hillview Middle School at the San Jose Earthquakes game against Houston at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 each and $5 from every ticket will go toward Hillview.
