Please be on the lookout for your mail-in only ballot due by May 3, 2016. On the ballot are two measures that impact our schools - Measure A and Measure C. Attention 7th Graders: WEB Applications Available
WEB stands for "where everybody belongs," and it is part of the transition program for incoming 6th graders. WEB is a nationwide program that helps 6th graders feel more comfortable and to achieve success in their first year of middle school. The WEB program helps run Camp Hillview and lead Character Education classes and other fun activities throughout the year. Soon, we will recruit WEB leaders for the 2016-2017 school year. We're looking for students who are willing to lead, who are kind, enthusiastic, and who can serve as positive role models. Please contact Ms. Watts, Mr. Sullivan or Mrs. Mathenia to get caught in the WEB. Access the application by joining the edmodo group with the code dmyku6. The Hillview PTO Nominating Committee is pleased to present the slate for the 2016-17 Hillview PTO Executive Board. The PTO's General Membership will vote on this slate of officers at the Hillview PTO General Meeting on Thursday, May 5 from 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. in the Hillview PAC.

Hillview PTO Spring General Meeting
All members of the Hillview PTO are invited to attend the Spring General Meeting on Thursday, May 5, 8:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. in the Hillview PAC. Superintendent Ghysels will present and take questions on the newly adopted MPCSD Strategic Directions. Also, the membership will vote on next year's Executive Board Slate and approve the 2016-2017 budget. You can learn more about the Strategic Directions here. 8th Grade Chipotle Fundraiser
The 8th grade Graduation Party fundraiser is this Wednesday, May 4, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Chipotle at Stanford Shopping Center. Mention Hillview Middle School and 50% of the proceeds from your purchase will be donated to the 8th grade Graduation Party.
Environmental Club: New!
Calling all students who care about climate change, sustainability and protecting the environment: Hillview is forming an environmental club. The club will meet at lunch on Tuesdays in Ms. Hilborn's room (D11). The first meeting is this Tuesday, April 26.
Hillview Night at the Earthquakes' Avaya Stadium
On May 11, come out and support Hillview Middle School at the San Jose Earthquakes game against Houston at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 each and $5 from every ticket will go toward Hillview. Hillview Talent Show: Tickets are Now on Sale
The popular Hillview Talent Show 2016 is ready to dazzle and amaze on May 6 and May 7 at 6:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. This year's theme is The Hillview Tonight Show starring the Hillview Hawks. The red carpet awaits you and your family in this always-entertaining event, complete with singing, dancing, comedy, drama, magic and a few surprise guests. General Admission tickets are now on sale here at the SeatYourself website. If you're new to Hillview, please know that both shows typically sell out. Hillview Digital Audiobooks
Thanks to a generous donation from the Hillview PTO, the library is now checking out Digital Audiobooks through our OverDrive collection. More information is available here. Summer Reading lists also are ready to preview. Reading assignments may be updated, but the books should stay the same. Booktalks coming soon. You may also preview books at the Book Fair, in the library, during school and at Open House.
Sports
Intramural Sports
Intramurals will continue during lunchtime. Spectators welcome, but please stay on bleachers and stage. No food/drink in the gym and backpacks should be on bleachers/stage also. We plan on keeping with indoor soccer and hockey this week, returning to basketball the first week of May.
After-School Basketball Most basketball jerseys have been returned, but some still must be collected. If you have after-school basketball jerseys and/or shorts, please return them as soon as possible. Thank you for your cooperation.
After-School Tennis
Tennis practice and matches continue this week for all three teams.
After-School Track Practices continue this Monday, April 25, and Wednesday, April 27. The time of this program is always 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. It can get breezy at M-A, so we advise a sweatshirt as well as sunscreen and water. Practice this week is on Monday, and there is a meet on Wednesday.
Boys Volleyball League matches continue this week.
May MadnessFor those who'd like additional basketball play, we continue our annual May Madness program with four Friday sessions on April 29, May 6, May 13, and May 20 from 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. All Hillview students are invited as well as Oak Knoll and Encinal 5th graders. Registration is available on Sportability. Coaches will be Mr. Eaton, Mr. Bell and Coach Weil (girls tournament team coach) as well as some high school coaches. At this time, the clinic is nearly full. If it does fill up, you are welcome to be placed on a waiting list. This Friday, April 29, is the first day of the program.
Spring Volleyball Practices continue on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. Please direct any questions to Coach Aricanli.

Are you ready to dance, dine, drink, and donate with your school friends this weekend? Because we can't wait to see y'all Saturday at the big event! Buy your tickets and sponsorships to the Wild Wild West Event Auction on April 30, 6:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. Tickets are available online through Thursday, April 28 and then, at the door, on Saturday night, for $115 per person.
Remember, Premier Silent Auction items are available only at the event, so don't miss out on those, either!
The online auction catalog closes on April 28. That's just a few short days from now so git 'long little doggies and ogle some stuff. You can register and start bidding right here. Be especially sure to check out the parties for adults and the kids-in-training items.

Schoolhouse Rocks 5K: Last Week for Discounted Entry Fee
The early-bird entry rate for the Schoolhouse Rocks 5K is about to fly away! Register prior to May 1, 2016 to secure the discounted entry fee of $30. After May 1, the entry fee will increase to $40.
The run will take place at Oak Knoll School on May 22, 2016. You can either enter the 2.5K family walk/run, or the competitive, chip-timed 5K. Both runs will start at 9:00 a.m., and the course will wind through the streets of Menlo Park. Check out the Wellness Fair after the run at Oak Knoll. There will be a stretching station, food, family fun and awards.

SHUSD Parent Education Mini-Series on "At-Risk Teens": "Saving Jake: When Addiction Hits Home" with award-winning author D'Anne Burwell, M.A.
An epidemic of prescription drug addiction is sweeping across the nation, impacting our youth in every neighborhood and community. In her award-winning memoir, D'Anne Burwell shares her powerful personal story -- a family grappling with a teenage son's drug addiction -- that transcends addiction and speaks to us all. Join us for a compassionate discussion on what every parent needs to know about the prescription drug and opioid epidemic in our communities.
D'Anne Burwell holds a Master's degree in education and advocates for families of addicts through radio commentaries, parent mentoring, speaking engagements and her resource-and-information website. She lives with her husband in Silicon Valley.
Join us for this workshop on Tuesday, April 26, from 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. in the Sequoia Union High School District Office, Birch Room at 480 James Avenue, Redwood City. Click here to register. AYSO Soccer Registration Starts May 1: Registration for AYSO Soccer for Atherton and Menlo Park residents starts May 1, 2016. Click here to register. Walk-in registration for the fall season is on May 14 and May 21 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the library of Hillview Middle School. If your child, or children, has/have played AYSO in our region, you may register online and do not need to attend walk-in registration. AYSO does not require tryouts and all players participate, regardless of level.
11th Annual Big Bear Run, May 1, 9:00 a.m.: For the past 10 years, Menlo-Atherton Athletic Boosters has held the Big Bear Run (a 5k fun run) with participants from around the world. This fun community event directly benefits our amazing M-A student-athletes, but most importantly, brings our school and outside community together for a very fun event. Please join us!!! Collage at Menlowe Ballet on April 29 - May 1: After the stunning success of its Nutcracker debut, Menlowe Ballet is back in the studio preparing Collage, which promises to be spectacular, bringing together three remarkable choreographers to create three, distinct new works for an expanded company of nineteen dancers, four of whom come from a major ballet company. Grassroot Soccer (GRS) Barefoot 3v3 Tournament On May 14: Inviting all Hillview students to a "Lose the Shoes" Grassroot Soccer (GRS) Barefoot 3v3 Tournament on Saturday, May 14, 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at La Entrada Soccer Fields, 2200 Sharon Road, Menlo Park. Registration fee is $20 per player or $25 with a GRS t-shirt included. Proceeds to benefit GRS, a non-profit promoting HIV/AIDS education through soccer in southern Africa. Kite Day on May 7: Join us at Bedwell-Bayfront Park for an afternoon of kite flying, food, music, bounce houses and a hot dog lunch. If the wind is just right, you might see the return of the, "Mega Fish," a 46-foot giant kite. Volunteers from the Menlo Park Kiwanis will barbecue hot dogs while Menlo Park staff and volunteers help you assemble your kite and get it up in the air.
Mothers and Sons Sought for Brain Research: The Center for Interdisciplinary Brain Sciences Research (CIBSR) on the Stanford University Medical Campus is looking for 8- to 12-year-old sons, and their mothers, to participate in the Social Brain Investigation involving brain imaging with NIR. Scans are safe, non-invasive and do not use X-rays or radiation. Dates and times can be scheduled as soon as possible depending on participant availability. For participating, a fee of $30.00 is offered, with access to ongoing updates about the study and, upon request, information from behavioral assessment results. Please contact Sharon Bade Shrestha.
Mothers and Teens Sought for Research on Food and Families: Stanford University's Department of Sociology is looking for mothers and their teenagers to participate in an interview about how families shop for food. Dates and times can be scheduled as soon as possible based on participant availability. Participants receive $60. Your participation will make a significant contribution to our understanding of the experiences of families around food. We want to hear your unique perspective. Puppet & Magic Show on May 13: All ages are welcome to attend a free Puppet & Magic Show featuring two, outstanding Bay Area performers: Steve Chaney and Dante. Steve will delight children with his comedic puppeteering and voices, while Dante will amaze everyone with an award-winning magic performance. 6:00 - 7:00 p.m., M-A PAC.

This newsletter is published by Hillview School parent volunteers every Sunday of the school year, except for Sundays preceding a full week of vacation.
Submissions: The deadline to submit for the Sunday Hillview Newsletter is the preceding Wednesday at noon. Please email your submission to hvnewsletter@mpcsd.org. Please note that submissions may be edited for content and/or length. Submissions received after the deadline will be eligible for inclusion the following week. Submissions are eligible to run for up to two weeks.
To submit an announcement for an off-campus community event, please email your announcement to communitynews@mpcsd.org. The submission deadline is Wednesday at noon for the following Sunday newsletter.
