ACTION REQUIRED! Parents of Current 6th Graders - Whooping Cough (Pertussis) Tdap Vaccination
All incoming 7th graders in the 2016-17 school year are required by law to provide proof of a whooping cough booster, or Tdap shot (Td does not meet the requirement). Students will not be admitted to school if proof is not received before the first day of school. To avoid exclusion on the first day of school, bring an updated copy of your child's immunization record showing proof of Tdap to the school office now. Do not mark or highlight this record. If there is a verified medical condition against vaccination, you are required to provide the school with a doctor's written statement which must include the specific nature and probable duration of the medical condition. Acceptable proof of immunization includes:
  • A printout or copy of your child's immunization record from your child's clinic or physician's office;
  • A copy of the yellow immunization record; or
  • A certification of Tdap booster notice from your child's clinic, physician's office or pharmacy.
All documents submitted must have your child's name, date of birth, the date Tdap was administered and a stamp, or physician's signature, from the clinic. For more information about the law and whooping cough, visit shotsforschool.org, or contact Nancy McMahon, Health Services Assistant at nmcmahon@mpcsd.org or (650) 321-7140, x5912.

California Healthy Kids Survey
Recognized as the leading health data-gathering survey, the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) will be given to all Hillview students on February 8, 2016. Participation is voluntary. A consent form for parents of 6th graders has been sent home with students. 7th and 8th graders will automatically participate unless their parents return a notification and withdrawal form. The consent form, and copies of the survey, in either English or Spanish, are available for review either at the Hillview office or click here.

8th grade Panoramic Picture
On Thursday, February 4, the 8th grade class took their annual panoramic picture. An ordering envelope went home with your student on Tuesday, February 3. If you missed the ordering envelope and are interested in purchasing a panoramic picture now, you must use a credit card and order on the iClickSmiles website. Once there, click on "Order Pictures" and enter Hillview's code: HVpano16. More detailed instructions are on the attached flyer. The deadline to order is Thursday, February 11.

Independent Study Plan (ISP) Reminder
Independent Study may be requested if your child is unable to attend school due to an event or family situation. Through a signed contract, the student, under the guidance of the parent, agrees to complete assignments, projects, and homework for the days of missed attendance. Upon grading and approval that all assignments have been completed satisfactorily, the teacher will note the successful completion of the Independent Study, and the absence will be coded as ISP, as opposed to U (unexcused). To arrange an ISP for your child, please start with his or her counselor. Ideally, you will notify the counselor a week in advance of the planned absence. Ms. Watts is our 6th grade counselor, Ms. Cardosi is our 7th grade counselor and 8th graders are shared by Ms. Cardosi (last names A- L) and Ms. Watts (last names M - Z).

Lost and Found
Have you lost a jacket, shorts or even a pair of shoes? Maybe a lunch box, water bottle or an umbrella? All of this and more is sitting in the Lost and Found inside the Student Center. Please have your child swing by and take a look during brunch or lunch for their lost item. All remaining items will be donated on February 11, 2016 to a local charity.

Protect Our Students: Observe the No Turn on Red Sign at Elder / Santa Cruz
Thank you to the many parents who are driving safely and taking care when navigating in our neighborhood. We have, however, received alarming reports of parents illegally turning right at the Elder / Santa Cruz intersection when students are present. Right turns on red are not permitted when students are present because of the danger they pose to students crossing the street. Please slow down, observe traffic signs and signals, and crosswalks. The Menlo Park Police Department has been alerted to these concerns, and will be monitoring for compliance.

Colors For Causes Spirit Week: February 8-11!
It's time for a spirit week filled with dress-up days in Hillview's annual "Colors for Causes" week! Each year, Hillview ASB researches important causes that are important to students and creates a spirit week campaign to raise awareness

This year, we are excited to announce the colors and causes! This past Friday was the kickoff as we started with raising awareness for gender equality with a green spirit day and a spirit game in the quad. Every day this week will be a different color, all supporting a separate cause each day. Students will also be able to purchase colored spirit items, like bucket hats and jumbo sunglasses, from Hillview's ASB Colors for Causes store during every lunch to support the day's cause. Monday will be Orange Day to support Copper's Dream, a non-profit animal rescue organization. Tuesday will be Red Day to support St. Jude Children's Hospitall, which specializes in cancer treatment for children. Wednesday will be Pink Day supporting Make-A-Wish Foundation, an organization that grants kids with terminal illnesses one of their biggest desires. Finally, Thursday will be Blue Day in support of the The Thirst Project, a non-profit organization with the goal to give clean water to underprivileged or rural areas. ASB is very excited to see Hillview students support these causes during Colors for Causes Week! If you are interested in learning more about the organizations that ASB have chosen, we have attached the links to their website below.

Each day, we will feature announcements on HawkTalk with information for students to learn about these important causes and how they can help. Please encourage your child to participate in each color day by wearing as much of that color as possible on each day and purchasing one of our affordable spirit wear accessories at lunch. 100% of the profits will be donated to the causes mentioned above.

HillviewTV.com
Hillview's Broadcast team has a new home! Watch all of your favorite HVTV episodes, a bi-weekly news broadcast made by students, for students. Don't worry...parents can enjoy it too. To see our students and staff in action as well as highlights from some of our ASB events, head over to www.hillviewtv.com. Broadcast director Mr. Darmanin would like to thank Chris Harris and Andrew Gordan for their creative vision in creating this new site to showcase our work.

Hillview Library
7th Grade Research Ongoing!
We are continuing Social Studies research on Meso America and starting Science Research for Medical Reports. Resources can be found on the library website under Research and Project Pathfinders.

Permission to Access Digital Teen Collection
Our Teen Collection is going Digital, just in time for February break! If you have already given permission for your 7th or 8th grader to access our Teen collection but would rather they NOT access the Teen eBooks, just email Ms. Piombo or Mrs. Mathenia before February break. 6th graders can access the Teen collection on a case by case basis by getting permission for an individual book, via email or this form. 7th and 8th graders may also use the form if their parents would rather not give them access to the entire Teen collection.

Hillview Music

Music Man Pit Band Needs Musicians
If there is anyone in the Hillview Community who can help out by performing in the Music Man pit band, we especially need brass (trumpet, trombone) and woodwind (clarinet, sax) musicians. Parents, neighbors and older siblings are welcome to join! Please contact Mr. Vaughan if interested.

Hillview Spelling Bee
Congratulations to Lauren Hall, our 2016 Hillview Spelling Bee Champion! She correctly spelled 29 words including viburnum, cozen, complaisant, and pneumonia. Her championship word was pentimento.  We wish Lauren the best of luck at the Area Finals at Lawrence Hall of Science at UC Berkeley on February 20.

Hillview Sports
Intramural Sports
Intramural sports will continue on Wednesdays and Thursdays until further notice. Basketball will be the activity of choice until February break. After break, we'll go back to soccer and hockey or volleyball, badminton, or possibly ping pong. All students are welcome to participate, but there will be a limit of 40 players at any one time. Spectators are welcome, as always, to sit in the bleachers or on the stage. Please note that there is no food/drink in the gym and backpacks should be off the floor.

After-School Basketball
Basketball games for all teams continue this week. Game days will be Mondays for 8th grade boys/girls, Tuesdays for 6th grade girls, Wednesdays for 6th grade boys, Thursdays for 7th grade girls, and Fridays for 7th grade boys. 6th/7th graders will play at Arrillaga gym; 8th graders will play at one of the following schools: Hillview/La Entrada, Woodside Elementary, and Corte Madera. The 6th/7th grade schedules and standings can be found here. The 8th grade schedule can be found here. Click here for the unofficial 6th/7th grade game and standings schedule.

The 8th grade boys and girls Tournament Team season is now completed. Last week the season finished with the annual St. Simon's Tournament. Both Hillview teams did well. The girls won their second tournament championship. All tournament selection was Merit Hoyem and tournament MVP was Maeia Makoni. The boys ended up in 3rd place with Trevor Wargo earning all tournament selection. We are very proud of the players and their efforts throughout the season. The final game will be the annual alumni games vs. last year's tournament teams. More information to come on the date and time.

After-School Tennis Registration Update: Registration Opens Today at 9:00 a.m.

We humbly apologize for the unfortunate delay in after-school tennis registration last Sunday due to technical difficulties. The PTO Board, Mr. Bell, and Mrs. Marks have met and we believe we have a fair solution. Registration will begin today, February 7 starting at 9:00 a.m. and continue through Friday, February 12 on Sportability. Registration is free for all. Tryouts will take place from March 1 - 4. Following tryouts, the coaching staff will select Varsity A and Varsity B teams. It is possible that there will be a third team, and this will likely be determined on Friday, February 12. Players placed on teams will be instructed on how to finish the registration process with payment. If we are not allowed a third team, we will still have a third group of players who may not be able to play in league matches, but will receive as much practice time as Varsity A and B players as well as matches among themselves. The city of Menlo Park has been kind enough to extend our practice slots on Friday until 6:30 p.m., giving more players the opportunity to participate. We promise to do our best in assigning all students who register to play to one of the three teams (again, with the third possibly being a practice and non-league match play group). There will still be a limit on how many we can accommodate in the program since we have an absolute limit of 6 players per court practicing at once in any given hour. To register for tryouts go to Sportability. When asked for payment please use the code word: FREE and you will not be charged at this time. The payment process will be explained following tryouts. Please contact Mr. Bell with questions.

After-School Track Registration
Track registration will begin in February. The program will begin on Monday, April 11, immediately following Spring Break, and will continue through Wednesday, May 18. Track practices will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. on the Menlo-Atherton High School Track. Participating schools include: Hillview; Oak Knoll; Encinal; Woodside Elementary; La Entrada; and Corte Madera.

Questions regarding any of these sports programs should be directed to Harry Bell or (650) 483-4049.
