Bike Safety
Your child's safety is our top priority and we are noticing poor bike riding habits. Please remind your child to bike safely to and from school. This means that helmets are on and fastened. Bikes must obey all the rules of the road: bikes ride single file; bikes ride in the bike lane and not on the sidewalk; bikes ride on the right hand side of the street; and bikes obey all traffic signs, including stop signs and stoplights. We will be partnering with Menlo Park Police to ensure the safe travel of all our students.
Free Math Workbook Journals
The Hillview Office has free Math workbook journals available. These correspond to our new Common Core Math textbooks. If you would like one or several copies, just come into the Hillview office October 12 - 14 and pick them up. We have journals for all of our math programs except for Geometry. These journals are a great resource for independent study and practice.

Reminder: No After-School Activities October 12-15
Just a reminder that no after-school activities will meet this week due to minimum days. All programs will resume as scheduled on Monday, October 19. Check our website for any additional information. Any questions, feel free to contact the PTO Coordinator, Erica Galles. Sports programs do continue this week; see below for more information.
School Programs
ASB Canned Food Drive
ASB is running a canned food drive from October 19 to November 2. Help us become closer as a community through helping others, provide food to people in need, and encourage students to make a difference in the world. Please send your child to school with canned food, which will be donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank. Second Harvest has the greatest need for canned meals (stew, chili, and soup), tuna, canned meat, canned foods with pop-top lids, canned fruit in juice, and canned vegetables with low sodium. Rice, flour, sugar, and items packaged in glass unfortunately cannot be accepted. Thank you for your help!
7th/8th Grade Halloween Dance
ASB is excited to announce that the Twilight Zone Halloween Dance for 7th and 8th graders is coming soon on Friday October 23, 2015. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the dance will end promptly at 8:30 p.m. Please do not park in the carpool lane. If a student is dropped off after 7:00 p.m., a parent or guardian must walk the student to the door, and if a student needs to be picked up early, a parent or guardian must check in with a chaperone before the student leaves. Please remind your child that the Dress for Success Norms do apply. Students may buy their tickets during lunch in the student center from October 19 - 23. The discounted advance purchase price, with ASB card, is $5. Students may also buy their tickets at the door on the evening of the dance, but they will have to pay the full price of $7. Concessions will be sold during the dance, and everything will be $1. Please contact Mr. Darmanin with any questions.
Service Team Costume Drive
The Silver Hawks Service Team is hosting a Halloween Costume Drive through October 17. Please consider donating your outgrown and gently-used Halloween costumes. All costumes welcome, but please no torn or damaged costumes, wigs, masks, plastic guns, knives, or anything that depicts violence. Collection bins will be placed in front of the PAC. In addition, on Tuesday October 13, andWednesday, October 14, there will be students at drop-off starting at 8:00 a.m. to collect costumes. Students will receive one Block H point per costume, and three Block H points if they bring in two or more costumes, so make sure to have students label the package with their names. Thank you for your participation! And the kids thank you!
Silver Hawks Service Team Speaker On Tuesday, October 13, from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. in the Hillview PAC, Lindy Keefe from Free the Children will be doing a workshop about community service and how to create an action plan for your ideas to take shape! Join the Silver Hawks Service Team for this great opportunity. Workshop is limited to 60 participants -- first come, first served.
Hillview Sports
Intramural Sports: Intramural sports continue this week with either volleyball/badminton or indoor hockey/soccer depending on the PE activities. All students are invited but there will be a limit on how many may participate at once. No food or drink is permitted in the gym. Spectators are welcome to sit on the bleachers or on the stage to watch and support. All backpacks need to be stored on the bleachers or on the stage; please do not put them on the gym floor.
Girls Volleyball: Practice and games continue with 7th/8th graders on Mondays and 6th graders on Tuesdays. Game schedules and team records can be found here. This will be the third week of games. Flag Football: Games and practice continue this week regardless of conferences. Games this week include: Monday, October 12: 6th/7th Blue at Woodside Elementary at 3:45 p.m.; Tuesday, October 13: 8th at JLS in Palo Alto at 4:00 p.m.; Thursday October 15: 6th/7th Blue vs. San Carlos at Hillview at 4:00 p.m. and 6th/7th Gold at Jordan in Palo Alto at 4:00 p.m.; Friday, October 16: 8th vs. Woodside Elementary at Hillview at 3:45 p.m., 6th/7th Blue vs. Woodside Elementary at Hillview at 4:45 p.m., and Gold at JLS in Palo Alto at 4:00 p.m.
After School Basketball Registration Begins: All Hillview students are invited to register for after school basketball. Registration continues through Sunday, October 25. Please only register if you intend on playing. Mandatory Team Placement workouts for 6th/7th graders will take place on Saturday, November 14; for 8th graders, they will be on Wednesday, November 18. We understand some students may not be able to attend the workouts which is not a problem as long as we are notified in advance. The student will be placed on a team, but if at all possible we would like all participants to attend the workouts. More information to follow. NOTE: We can only field as many teams as we have coaches. At this time we desperately need coaches at the 6th/7th grade level. If we do not get enough coaches we will be forced to put later registrants on a wait list.
Basketball Tournament Team Program - 8th Graders: Tryouts will take place this week from October 12 - 15. Boys tryouts will be on Monday and Wednesday, October 12 and 14; girls tryouts will be on Tuesday and Thursday, October 13 and 15. All four workouts will be held from 12:00 - 1:30 p.m. Players may NOT try out unless they are registered for MPMSL (the 8th grader basketball balanced team league) on Sportability. We expect to see those trying out to attend both workouts. Questions regarding these sports programs should be directed to Harry Bell at (650) 483-4049.

MPCSD Blood Drive
Most of us know someone who has had cancer. But did you know many cancer patients need blood transfusions as they undergo treatment? In the last three years, two MPCSD kids have battled cancer. This year the nephew of an Oak Knoll teacher is fighting this disease. In situations like this we can feel helpless. But we can make a difference. Not just to cancer patients but to anyone in need of blood. Each blood donation you make can help up to three people. One hour of your time and you get to make a difference in three people's lives. It is an amazing gift.
The MPCSD event will be held at the Menlo Park Center, 445 Burgess Drive, all day on Tuesday, November 3, Thursday, November 5, and Saturday November 7. The Menlo Park center is open for whole blood donations on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m., and on Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Walk-ins are welcome, but you are encouraged to make an appointment either online or by calling (650) 723 - 7831. The Blood Center accepts donors aged 17+ (or 16 with parental consent). For the full list of donor requirements, visit the Eligibility page of their main website.
