Join the Asset Team
Our Hillview Asset Team is focused on creating and maintaining a positive school culture and positive school connections to foster success for all of our students. Interested in joining us? Our first meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 30, from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. in the Large Conference Room. Email Danielle O'Brien with questions.
Block H Summer Hours Due September 30
Did your child earn Block H points over the summer? If so, please remind them that their Block H points are due by September 30 to Mrs. Fichou in the student center. Forms can be printed here. What are Block H points? These are points that track student involvement at school in a variety of activities as well as community service. For service hours, students can self-report their volunteer work to get credit. Any hours completed over the summer are due by September 30, and any hours completed during the school year are due by the end of each trimester in which they were earned. For more information on Block H, please go here or to our student activities website. Any questions can be directed to Mr. Darmanin or Mrs. Fichou.
Emergency Preparedness
The Hillview team is working diligently to ensure your student's safety. We adhere to the San Mateo County Office of Education's The Big 5, emergency protocols that are common throughout the county at all schools. As such, we practice The Big 5 and prepare for emergency situations with emergency drills scheduled throughout the school year. Our first drill, an Evacuation Drill, is scheduled for Tuesday, October 6. We will have other drills to practice the other Big 5 protocols and will occur over the course of the school year.
Mini-Course Volunteer Opportunities
The Mini-Course Planning Team is already getting ready for a fantastic Mini-Course week this Spring, and it will be the best yet! Whether you want to chaperone, teach a guest lesson, provide connections and/or supplies, or serve as a Logistics Volunteer (like a room parent for one specific mini-course), we want to hear from you! Please sign up to add your name to the list of mini-course volunteers and be the first to know about all the fun opportunities. If you have already signed up via the PTO website, no need to do so again - you will be getting more info soon. Thank you for your support! This program could not run without the Hillview neighborhood of parents pitching in.
Ordering School Pictures Your student's school pictures are available online. The order deadline - before the price increases - is October 1. Check out the website iClickSmiles.com for the link to your student's proofs. To access these proofs, you'll need a unique student number. To find this student number, check your email for a message from iClickSmiles or check with your student. A blue page was also sent home in PE with this information. Can't find it? Click here for help from iClickSmiles. Email Danielle O'Brien with questions.
Parent-Teacher Conferences are Coming!
Hillview devotes four days to parent-teacher conferences in the fall each year, just after the mid-point of the first trimester. This year, those days are October 12 - 15. They are minimum days, which means students are released at 11:45 a.m. (Please make a note: There is no SamTrans bus service after school on minimum days, so plan accordingly for student transportation home from school on those days). At the middle school level, it is impossible for us to conference with every family. Our practice, therefore, is to set up conferences first with those students who are most in need of them. After we have scheduled these conferences, we open up our online conference scheduler to the remaining families, and you may at that time take the remaining slots. If you do not receive an invitation from your child's teachers to conference, it doesn't mean they don't want to conference with you; it simply means that a conference with you is not a high need. Stay tuned for more information. Our online scheduler will open on Wednesday, October 7. And please be aware that at the middle school level, students attend conferences! They need to be involved in these conversations.
PowerSchool Single Sign-On We want parents to be aware that the way they access PowerSchool is new this year. With your Back to School Night mailing that you received the week of September 7, we included a personalized letter that walked you through the steps to set up what is called "Single Sign-On" to to the PowerSchool Parent Portal, along with the "Access ID" and "Access Password" for your student(s). The instructions can be found on our website. In the "For Parents" section on the left-hand navigation pane, refer to "PowerSchool Single Sign-On," or go directly to the page through this link. Need your students' Access ID and Access Password? Call the Hillview front office.

"Demystifying Design Thinking and Innovation"
Wednesday, October 7, at 6:30 p.m. in the Hillview PAC. Partner up with your K-8th grade student, or come on your own, but bring your open mind for an evening of design thinking workshops! There will be special introductions from: Branko Lukic, Designer, Author, and Founder of Nonobject Inc.; Suzanne Pellican, Vice President of Design at Intuit; Erin Raab, Design Coach and PhD candidate at Stanford University; and Lisa Kay Solomon, author of Moments of Impact. Faculty Facilitators: Erik Burmeister; Theresa Fox, Willy Haug, Heidi Hendrickson, Mary Martin, Laura Olson, Susan Sanchez, Lela Ward, Gina Watkins, and Heidi Yamada.

"Safety First: A Reality-Based Approach to Teens and Drugs"
T hursday, October 8, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m., M-A Performing Arts Center Cafe. Just say no or say nothing at all? This is the question that many parents face with regard to drug use in their teens-whether alcohol, marijuana, or other drugs. Most drug education programs are aimed solely at preventing drug use. After instructions to abstain, the lesson ends. No information is provided about how to avoid problems or prevent abuse for those teens who do experiment. How can you help your kids stay safe? Join us for an interactive workshop with Marsha Rosenbaum, PhD, founder of the Safety First drug education project at the Drug Policy Alliance and author of Safety First: A Reality-Based Approach to Teens and Drugs. Dr. Rosenbaum earned her doctorate in medical sociology at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF). She is the author of numerous scholarly articles about drug use, drug treatment, and drug policy. Her opinion pieces have appeared in USA Today, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, and San Jose Mercury News. In addition, Dr. Rosenbaum is a proud graduate of Menlo-Atherton High School. Spanish translation will be available. M-A Parent Education Series events are free, sponsored by the M-A PTA, the Sequoia Healthcare District, and the Sequoia Union High School District. This event is open to parents, students, faculty/staff, and community members. Register here.
