Mini-Course Volunteer Opportunities
The Mini-Course Planning Team is already getting ready for a fantastic mini-course week next year, and it will be the best yet! Did you hear about a great course at Back to School Night that has you inspired to volunteer? Whether you want to chaperone, teach a guest lesson, provide connections and/or supplies, or serve as a Logistics Volunteer (like a room parent for one specific mini-course), we want to hear from you! Please sign up to add your name to the list of mini-course volunteers and be the first to know about all the fun opportunities. If you have already signed up via the PTO website, no need to do so again - you will be getting more info soon. Thank you for your support! This program could not run without the Hillview neighborhood of parents pitching in.

Homework Center, Math Clinic, and the Late Bus Start This Week!
September 14 marks the opening of our Homework Center and Math Clinic. Both of these programs run 3:15 - 4:45 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, and 2:40 - 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and they take place in the library. Homework Center is a drop-in program supervised by Hillview teacher Phil Eaton. It is mostly for "self-starters" who are looking for a quiet place to complete their homework. Math Clinic, run by former teacher Nancy Lewis, and supported by high school tutors, is targeted to those who need extra support or tutoring in math. A late bus will run for students who live across town. For a schedule of the Homework Center late bus and the stops it serves, please click this link to the district transportation web page.

Back to School Night Highlights
If you were unable to attend, teachers may have materials and presentations in digital form; reach out to them to receive these materials, if applicable. Also, if you are interested, you can read the welcome speech delivered by Willy Haug, Mary Martin, and Danielle O'Brien on Mr. Haug's "Principal Page." Finally, if you heard about Mr. Haug's "Mr. Roger's Neighborhood Joint Campaign Promo" and wonder what all the fuss is about, you can view it here.

Technology Corner
We have resolved many of the iPad issues students were experiencing in all three grade levels, and continue to address the few remaining known concerns. Thank you for your patience, and please remember that our site technician, Mr. Benelli, has regular tech help sessions scheduled at brunch and lunch every day in the library. Remind your student to visit him if he or she is experiencing any iPad issues.

WE'RE OFF TO A GOOD START!
Thank you to the 66% of Hillview families who have donated to the PTO during the first two weeks of school. We appreciate your support!

So far, together we have raised $152,000 which gets us 87% of the way to our $174,000 goal!

If you haven't had the time to donate yet, there are still two more weeks to help us reach our goal - just click here to donate today!

The PTO and the MPAEF continue their joint efforts to make Hillview the best it can be for our kids.

If you missed the awesome "Mr. Haug's Neighborhood" video which was shown at Back to School Night in support of the Joint Campaign, you can view it (and show it to your kids!) here.

When you support the PTO at $250 per child and the MPAEF at $1500 per child, this is the real difference you make in their education:

Together, we INSPIRE in our children a love of learning
Together, we INVOLVE ourselves in their learning journey
Together, we INVEST in their future

PTO donations are due by September 30. Please make your gift or pledge to the MPAEF by November 6. You can also reach out to your PTO Membership Team, Tracy Watt and Kathy Motemedi, and MPAEF school ambassadors Laura Paul and Elizabeth Lorenz with any questions. Click here to support these organizations today. Thank you for your support!

Bookopolis Book Club
We are excited to offer a new program to students beginning Tuesday, September 22. Kari Riedel, an Encinal and Hillview parent, is the founder of Bookopolis, an online community for young readers. She began offering a Bookopolis Book Club at Encinal and has since expanded it to include Oak Knoll and now Hillview. The Encinal students who participated in the program last year asked Kari to offer a Bookopolis Book Club at Hillview. The goal of the Bookopolis Book Club is to ignite and nurture a lifelong love of reading in all students, whether they are voracious or reluctant readers. Using group discussions, tinkering projects, games, and a supportive atmosphere, they make reading fun, relatable to real life, and help students sharpen comprehension and analysis skills. For all the details, click here or to register online, click here.

Debate Night
Come meet Coach Brier Buchalter, a Speech and Debate expert, who runs the Hillview Debate Team, as well as teams at Encinal and Oak Knoll. He organizes debate tournaments and programs across the Bay Area to benefit a wide range of students. Coach Brier's mission for his students is to live an examined life, continuously grow and change the world! He and his students would like to invite you and your children to come take part in the experience, starting with Debate Night on Thursday, September 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the Hillview PAC. Students will develop and apply critical thinking and reasoning skills, powerful delivery and effective communication techniques, rapid synthesis of information and paraphrasing of text, and skills to collaborate and effectively engage with diverse partners and consider multiple viewpoints.

Fiber Arts Club
Mrs. Glasser and Mrs. Cardosi will be hosting Hillview's Fiber Arts club on Wednesdays and Thursdays in Room A8. If you have any crochet hooks or knitting needles that are hiding in your closets, we'd happily take them off your hands. At this point, we have a great selection of yarn from donations last year (thank you) and can use more hooks and needles. Any donations can be dropped off in the office to Mrs. Cardosi.
