6th Grade Greek Olympics: The PE Department will be hosting the Olympics Games during 5th and 6th Period PE classes on May 19, 20, and 21. Tuesday's run will kick off the ceremonies and the games will continue into Wednesday and Thursday. During the run, volunteers will be stationed along the course to ensure safety and during the games. Volunteers will be timing and measuring individual events. Please sign up here to support the athletes.
Attention 7th Grade Students and Parents! Interested in spending your Mini-Course making history come alive while creating fantastic memories with your friends next year? Come join us on the Washington D.C. trip and you will have memories to last a lifetime. If you are interested in learning more about the trip please join us at an informational meeting on Thursday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m., in the Hillview PAC. For more information, contact Carolyn Malquist.
7th Grade Parent Help Needed: 8th grade graduation is Wednesday, June 10, and it's a Hillview tradition for 7th grade families to host so that 8th grade parents can relax and enjoy the ceremony. Volunteers are needed to bring food for the reception, to set up and clean, and to chaperone the dance. We need everyone's participation to make this event a success. To donate food items please click here to view the online sign up sheet or contact Deanna Schroder. 7th grade parents are also needed to help with set up and chaperone the post-graduation party. Watch this space ... for your byline! If you like the idea of knowing about Hillview events before they happen, and if you want to stretch your creative muscle, we have the perfect job for you! The newsletter team is looking for a co-editor for the 2015-2016 school year, working with a seasoned co-editor and Communications Chair. You'd work every other week, compiling and editing content provided by Hillview staff and parent volunteers. It's a fun way to be connected with what's going on at Hillview without attending meetings, while working at home on your own time. If you're interested, please email Michelle Box or Kate Kennedy.
Special Board Meeting and Vice Treasurer Nomination for 2015-16: We are pleased to announce that Cara Magliaro has been nominated to serve as Vice-Treasurer for the 2015-16 PTO Executive Board. Join us at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 20 in the PAC for a special board meeting to officially vote on this nomination. Then, stay for the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon!
PTO Volunteer Luncheon this Wednesday! Please join us this Wednesday, May 20, from 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. in the Hillview PAC for a luncheon to celebrate ALL volunteers at Hillview. End-of-Year Teacher and Staff Gift Fund: Hillview teachers and staff are amazing, and we want them to know it! Let's thanks them with an anonymous gift card by way of the 14th Annual Teacher Staff Gift Fund! At the end of each school year, parent volunteers organize a centralized fund to recognize more than 70 Hillview teachers an staff members. You are encouraged to contribute at your own comfort level. All proceeds are used to purchase gift cards for delivery on the last day of school. Please act by Friday, May 29th.

Hillview Site Council Seeking Parent Nominees: The Hillview Site Council, a group consisting of Hillview's Principal, teachers and staff, student representatives, and elected parents, is the body responsible for developing and monitoring the School Site Plan. This plan specifies the goals and metrics that drive the school's major decisions on academics, the school environment, social-emotional well-being, technology, and any other significant areas related to the running of the school. The Site Council is also responsible for creating, implementing and evaluating the annual school survey. The Hillview Site Council has three open parent positions (out of five regular parent positions) for the two year term from 2015-2016 thru 2017-2018 and one English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC) parent position open for this same term. The council meets approximately once a month after school. All meetings are open to the public. Interested candidates should submit their name, a brief description of their background, and reasons for wanting to serve on the council to Andrea Luskin by Sunday, May 31. Site Council nominees will be voted on at the council's last meeting of this year on Monday, June 8. The meeting will take place from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Hillview front office conference room. Candidates must be present at the meeting. All parents of Hillview students, or of incoming Hillview students for the 2015/16 school year, who are in attendance at the meeting are eligible to vote. Ground Breaking Ceremony for new Laurel School Upper Campus: Please join us for the ground breaking ceremony for the Laurel School Upper Campus on Thursday, May 21 at 2:45 p.m. The ceremony will be held at the school site located at 275 Elliott Drive in Menlo Park. Refreshments and sweets will be served.

Hillview Music
Come hear our groups at the following events:

- The Hillview Spring Concert will be MONDAY, May 18 (Please note the date change!!!)
Did you know that Hillview musical groups have participated in more than 25 performances this year? Thank you for your continued support of music and the arts at Hillview.
Hillview Sports
Intramural Sports: Ping Pong/Badminton/High Jump will continue in the gym during lunchtime for intramural sports. Intramural sports are held only on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
After School Tennis: After school tennis has now concluded. We thank the coaches, coordinators, families and of course, the players for a terrific season. After School Track will begin its fifth week. The track program will now only be held at Menlo-Atherton High School on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.
Spring Volleyball continues on Tuesday this week. There will be no program on Thursday, May 21.
For Basketball Clinic participants: May Madness Friday clinics continue for a forth session this Friday, May 22 from 3:30 - 5:30 p.m.
Tournament Team Basketball/Volleyball: It was decided at a meeting this past week that the tournament team will continue. Mr. Bell will no longer be coordinating the program. More information will be provided to interested families before tryouts begin in the fall.
Basketball Challenge: We invite the Hillview community to come and cheer on a group of 6th graders who will play a basketball game vs staff members. The game will be played on Thursday, May 21 in the Hillview Gym at 4:00 p.m.. All are welcome to support both teams.

Are You In RUN for Education

$3,000 in Grand Prizes: Are You In RUN for Education: Over $3,000 in total prizes will be awarded to top place finishers of the Are You In Run for Education, presented by Nelson Roberts Investment Advisors, on Sunday, May 31. Prizes include ten elegant activity trackers by Misfit Wearables, gift cards from running specialists, FleetFeet; award winning construction toys by GoldieBlox, stylish Smith Optics sunglasses and sporty Camelback water bottles.
The run will be held at Oak Knoll School at 9 a.m. You can choose to enter either the competitive, chip-timed 5K or the 2.5K (1.5 mile) family walk or run.The entry fee to run is $40. Families can enter as a Family Sponsor for a donation of $500, which includes five race entries, and an invitation to the Nelson Roberts Family Pasta Night (let's carb-load!) on Saturday May 30th at the Griffith family home in Atherton.
To register and learn more about the run, visit http://areyouin.mpcsd.org. The Are You In RUN for Education is organized by the MPAEF, as well as the PTO's of Encinal, Laurel, Oak Knoll and Hillview schools. Funds raised will support our children's education.

Race Transportation: Parking will be limited near Oak Knoll School. We encourage you to bike, walk or take the shuttle bus from Hillview Middle School parking lot starting at 7:45 a.m.

Alpine Strikers Tryouts: Is your child passionate about soccer? We hope so! Alpine Strikers will be holding tryouts for the fall season over the next few weeks (starting May 11). Tactical Urbanism in Menlo Park, today from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m., at the Arrillaga Family Recreation Center's Cypress Room: Wouldn't it be nice to be able to get to school and around town by foot or bike? It's a great idea, but our current streets don't always make it easy. Join us for an exciting talk by Julie Flynn of The Street Plans Collaborative and learning about "tactical urbanism" - a city and citizen-led approach to neighborhood building using short-term, low-cost interventions to catalyze long-term changes. Flynn recently helped Morgan Hill pilot-test a protected bicycle lane through the town's commercial center. She will share information about this project, as well as other success stories, to provide ideas for what we can do here in Menlo Park. Your RSVP is appreciated, but not necessary to attend.
Design the Future for High School Students : Design the Future is an intensive, one-week design thinking summer program for rising Bay Area 10th - 12th graders from June 15 - 21, 2015 at Stanford University and Radicand Labs. Students interested in design thinking and entrepreneurship should apply here by May 15 for an early bird discount. Contact Durell Coleman, program founder and CEO of DC Design, for more information.
PATHworks Sports & STEM Summer Academy: Founded by a US Olympian & Stanford graduate, the PATHworks Summer Academy reinforces STEM & Language Arts Education for incoming 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students through structured sports participation. The curriculum engages students with their grade-level learning objectives and enhances academic performance through multi-sport technique training and project-based activities. PATHworks' interdisciplinary curriculum can inspire any student, regardless of athletic skill level. This newsletter is published by PTO parent volunteers every Sunday of the school year, except for Sundays preceding a full week of vacation.
Submissions: The deadline to submit for the Sunday Hillview Newsletter is Wednesday at noon. Please email your submission to newsletter@hillviewpto.org. Please note that submissions may be edited for content and/or length. Submissions received after the deadline will be eligible for inclusion the following week. Submissions are eligible to run for up to two weeks.
To submit an announcement for an off-campus community event, please email your announcement to communitynews@mpcsd.org. The submission deadline is Wednesday at noon for the following Sunday newsletter.
