Hillview's Smarter Balanced Assessments this Week: Hillview's state standardized testing window for this year is May 11 - 15 for 6th and 7th graders, and May 6 - 15 for 8th graders. It is very important that you reschedule any morning appointments for the week of May 11; we want to avoid make-ups so that students miss as little instructional time as possible. For more information on the tests, links to practice tests, and the mini-lessons we are giving our students in preparation, refer to the front page of the Hillview website under "Hillview News."

Hillview feedback sought on Santa Cruz changes: Join the City of Menlo Park staff on Monday, May 11, at 6:30 p.m., in the Hillview PAC to hear about upcoming plans for changes on Santa Cruz Ave. that will impact Hillview students and families. Earlier this year, the City Council selected a preliminary design that would add sidewalks and bicycle lane improvements on Santa Cruz from downtown to Hillview School. City staffers will host a community meeting to share the concepts and next steps for design and implementation, and would very much like the Hillview community's participation and feedback. For more information, please contact Nikki Nagaya.

Missing something? Thank you to all the generous parents who loaned items for use during Mini-Course week. There are still several things in the office that need to be claimed - coolers, sleeping bags, cookies sheets, sewing machines, SCUBA gear and more! If any of this sounds familiar, please pick up your items from the Hillview office. It's wise to call ahead as the items are stored in the closet of the large conference room, and may not be accessible when there is a meeting in that room. Thank you for loaning, and for helping us clean up for next year.

Hillview Library Book Fair: Get your books for summer reading at the Book Fair! Hours are: May 11 and 12, 8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.; May 13 and 14, 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., with Open House night hours from6:00 - 9:00 p.m . You can preview the lists on the library website.

6th Grade Greek Olympics: The PE Department will be hosting the Olympics Games during 5th and 6th Period PE classes on May 19, 20, and 21. Tuesday's run will kick off the ceremonies and the games will continue into Wednesday and Thursday. During the run, volunteers will be stationed along the course to ensure safety and during the games. Volunteers will be timing and measuring individual events. Please sign up here to support the athletes.

Flower Day is this Thursday: Every year, Hillview teachers and staff look forward to Flower Day when they receive beautiful bouquets of flowers on behalf of the students to thank them for their hard work. This year, Flower Day is on Thursday, May 14 - the same day as Open House. Please send a few flowers to school with your child this Thursday. Volunteers will be collecting them at the car line and in the lunch area at Hillview. We will then assemble the donated flowers into bouquets and deliver them to the teachers and staff. Take care of your end-of-the year teacher gifts
With the end of the school year just four weeks away, it's time to get organized!  Take care of your year-end teacher gift by donating to the Hillview Teacher/Staff Gift Fund.  At the end of each school year, PTO volunteers organize a centralized fund to recognize all 70+ Hillview staff members. Parents are encouraged to contribute at whatever level is comfortable for you. All donations are anonymous and used to provide gift cards to the Hillview team on the last day of school. Checks should be made out to Katie Angioletti and can be dropped off in the school office or mailed to:

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Hillview Talent Show! From cast and performers to the crew, it was truly a unique event. Well done!

This past week also included our Chorus Spring Concert with guests from the Stanford Jazz Workshop's middle school Giant Steps Jazz Choir. Hillview students Christina Ikonomou and Charlie Smith are members of the jazz choir. We enjoyed a fun BBQ before the music started. It was a truly fun, musical evening.

Come hear our groups at the following events:

  • The 7th/8th grade orchestra will perform at Open House
  • The Jazz Band will perform at the Menlo Park Farmer's Market on Sunday May 17 from 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
  • The Hillview Spring Concert will be MONDAY, May 18 (Please note the date change!!!)

Did you know that Hillview musical groups have participated in more than 25 performances this year? Thank you for your continued support of music and the arts at Hillview.

Tournament Team Basketball/Volleyball: The End of an Era?: The Hillview Tournament Team programs for 7th/8th grade girls in volleyball and 8th graders in basketball are in jeopardy and may not continue. Mr. Bell will hold a meeting to discuss the future of these programs for interested families. The meeting is scheduled for this Tuesday, May 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the PAC. If you are interested in having your children participate in tournament team volleyball (7th/8th grade girls) or tournament team basketball (8th grade girls/boys), we recommend at least one parent per family attend. Discussion points are: 1) Mr. Bell will no longer be coordinating the programs; 2) Player dedication to both tournament team and balanced teams. Please note that this meeting is not intended for students.

Basketball Challenge: We invite the Hillview community to come and cheer on a group of 6th graders who will play a basketball game vs staff members. The game will be played on Thursday, May 21 in the Hillview Gym at 4:00 p.m.. All are welcome to support both teams.
