Hillview News
Community Input Session on Hillview's Next Principal: On Tuesday, May 5, from 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. in the PAC, Superintendent Ghysels invites community members to give feedback to the district as to what they'd like to see in Hillview's next principal.
Hillview's Smarter Balanced Assessments begins the week of May 11: Hillview's state standardized testing window for this year is May 11 - 15 for 6th and 7th graders, and May 6 - 15 for 8th graders. It is very important that you reschedule any morning appointments for the week of May 11; we want to avoid make-ups so that students miss as little instructional time as possible. For more information on the tests, links to practice tests, and the mini-lessons we are giving our students in preparation, refer to the front page of the Hillview website under "Hillview News."
2015 Mini-Course Week Parent Survey: Once again we have enjoyed a wonderful Mini-Course week exploring new places and ideas, making new friends, and getting to know teachers in unexpected new ways. Of course, Mini-Course week could not happen without the tireless volunteer time and energy of so many parents and community members. Whether you served as a Logistics Volunteer, chaperoned a field trip, brought a lesson from your hobby or profession to the classroom, donated supplies, or sent your child off to school each day with an open mind, we appreciate you, we depend on you, and most of all we THANK YOU! Please click here to complete this year's parent survey, as we continually strive to strengthen and improve this unique program.
ACTION REQUIRED! Attention: Parents of Current 6th Graders - Whooping Cough (Pertussis) Tdap Vaccination: All incoming 7th graders in the 2015-16 school year are required by law to provide proof of a whooping cough booster, or Tdap shot (Td does not meet the requirement). Students will not be admitted to school if proof is not received before the first day of school.
To avoid exclusion on the first day of school in August, parents are being asked to provide proof of Tdap now. Please bring an updated copy of your child's immunization record showing proof of Tdap to the school office. Do not mark or highlight the copy. If there is a verified medical condition against vaccination, you are required to provide the school with a doctor's written statement which must include the specific nature and probable duration of the medical condition. If there is a personal belief for not vaccinating, you are required to obtain a personal belief exemption from your child's physician (form CDPH 8262).
Acceptable proof of immunization includes:
- Print-out or copy of immunization record from your child's clinic or physician's office;
- A copy of the yellow immunization record;
- A certification of Tdap booster letter from your child's clinic or physician's office.
All of these documents must have your child's name, date of birth, date Tdap was administered, and a stamp or physician's signature from the clinic. For more information about the law and whooping cough, visit District Health Services or shotsforschool.org, or contact Nancy McMahon, Health Services Assistant at (650) 321-7140, x5912. Attention 7th Graders: WEB Leader applications are due by May 6! WEB stands for Where Everybody Belongs and as a WEB Leader you would be welcoming our new 6th graders to Hillview by helping with activities for Camp Hillivew in August. Leaders also help the 6th graders with peer mentoring throughout the year. Being a WEB Leader is a wonderful opportunity that is fun and a great way to be involved at Hillview. We're looking for a diverse group of leaders who are enthusiastic, positive, and ready to help others. Applications are available on your science teacher's Edmodo page. Your teachers will also have copies of the application. The application is due by Wednesday, May 6, by 3:00 p.m. to the office. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Mathenia, Mr. Sullivan, or Ms. Watts.
Hillview Library Book Fair: Get your books for summer reading at the Book Fair! Hours are: May 11 and 12, 8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.; May 13 and 14, 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m., with Open House night hours from 5:30 - 9:00 p.m. You can preview the lists on the library website.
District News from the Director of Student Services, Ginny Maiwald
May is Wellness Month!
Time is of the essence. Anxiety is high. Am I doing the right thing? I often feel so busy. Are these comments familiar to you? Despite the fact that technology and social media make it easier than ever to be "connected" to lots of people all the time, we are becoming less and less connected to one another. As parents and professionals, it's important to remember that little matters more to our well being than our relationships with other people. This is especially true for children. Relationships prove to be among those things that have the most significant effect on kids' healthy growth and well-being. Nurturing our children and embedding them in a strong network of family, friends, school, relatives and community, teaches them emotional security, safety and greatly affects their childhood happiness. What we do: We are deeply committed to the emotional well being of our students as we continue to plan and implement our student wellness plan. Support for our students focuses on three critical areas: Social Emotional Learning, Social Emotional Health, and Academic Supports. Social emotional learning supports are uniquely tailored at each of our school sites. The Pivot program and the Thrive elective at Hillview, the Fly program at Encinal, the U-turn program at Oak Knoll and the Character Education program at Laurel all focus on the five competencies of self-awareness, self-management, social-awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making. Additionally, all sites feature social-emotional curriculum and lessons around these competencies. Our school psychologists, counselors, inclusion specialists and interns collaborate on therapeutic services that foster social skills in children that teach compassion, gratitude, establish rapport, resolve conflict and teach skills that build strong relationships. Academic supports include collaborative classes, intervention programs, specially designed academic instruction, and individualized plans and programs for our students. What can you do? It is important to reflect on what we model for children. What do we have time for? Do you model kindness to yourself? Kindness is contagious. Research suggests that parents who are kind to themselves and others, raise children who show kindness to themselves and others. Kindness works by redirecting our energy toward things that make us feel good, reducing the toll that negative feelings have on our health and happiness. Be gentle on yourself, it is good for your health and your family's too! Renew your energy, reconnect with your loved ones and as a community we will positively influence our children's wellness.

End of Year Teacher and Staff Gift Fund: Wondering how to recognize your child's teacher at the end of the school year? At Hillview, we have a tradition of gifting to the staff as a community. Parents are encouraged to contribute to a centralized Teacher/Staff Gift Fund organized by PTO volunteers. All proceeds are used to buy gift cards for the entire Hillview team. The benefits of this approach are that:
- It's what the teachers and staff prefer. With gift cards, they can pick out something they really want or need.
- No one is overlooked. The Gift Fund recognizes more than 70 Hillview employees, including academy teachers, elective teachers, and specialists, and staff.
- It's easy! Just make a contribution, and the committee does the rest. Gift cards are delivered on the last day of school on behalf of the entire Hillview community.
To contribute to this fantastic program, please send a check made out to Katie Angioletti. You can either dropped it off in the school office or mailed it to:
