Hillview News Love and Logic with Technology - A Message from Mr. Haug: We would like to make you aware of a great resource: The Love and Logic Insider's Club. Love and Logic is an organization that provides many excellent resources to parents and educators alike (Hillview has enjoyed multiple trainings over the years). One free resource is a regular email newsletter called "The Insider's Club." To subscribe, click here. Recently, the "Insider's Club" has shared some great advice about technology, specifically, "At what age are students ready for cell phones, social media, etc.?" and "What parenting strategies can we use to help our children make good decisions online?" Click here to see both of these brief articles. We encourage you to download and read them.
As a reminder, these resources and many more related to technology can be found in the Hillview Digital Drivers License ("DDL") Parent Class, an Edmodo group that any Hillview parent can join. To learn how to register for the class, watch this video. The "join code" for the class, which changes from time to time, is agrntx.
If you have any questions about the Hillview DDL Parent Class, please contact Willy Haug at (650.326.4341 x2901). The class is open to all parents, not just parents of 6th graders.
Teens for Jeans this Week:
The Service Club is holding a Teens for Jeans drive this week, from January 26 - 30. This is a nationwide drive. Please encourage your children to bring in their donation, and show spirit for our amazing school! Bring in jeans, either new or used, and drop them off in buckets in the PAC or at carpool. The Service Club will donate them to kids in need - every child deserves to be warm during this cold season! Please bring in as many as you can, as every pair will make a kid's day! Participating students will receive block H points.
8th Grade Baby Picture Yearbook Deadline is January 30 - 1 Week Left: In this year's Hillview Yearbook, there will be a baby picture collage where you can submit your child's baby picture to be included with other 8th graders. This service is offered to 8th grade families free of charge to thank you for your support. In addition, we are continuing to offer optional dedication ads you may purchase for your 8th grader. We are using an online system where you and your child get to personalize everything about the ad. Some parents like to use it to immortalize a message to their child along with a baby picture; others create a timeline using multiple photos of their child through the years. Click here for more specific instructions on how to either submit a baby picture for the collage or order/create the dedication ad. Please note that both the dedication ad and the baby picture submissions are due January 30, 2015.

M-A Parent Education Series: "The Well-Balanced Student," with Denise Pope, PhD, Stanford University, Challenge Success, Tuesday, February 3, 2015, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m., M-A Performing Arts Center (PAC).
Please join us for an outstanding presentation by Dr. Denise Pope, internationally recognized educator, award-winning lecturer at Stanford University, and co-founder of Challenge Success, Stanford Graduate School of Education, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the well-being, engagement, and integrity of our students.
Today's high-pressure, fast-paced culture can interfere with healthy child development. When we are too focused on test scores, performance, and grades, we may deny kids the time and energy they need to effectively tackle the demanding work of growing up. This workshop examines the tensions that can occur between students, parents, and educators over issues such as homework, grades, and the culture of competition. We'll offer parents research-based strategies to create healthier home and school environments. Click here to register.
M-A Parent Education Series events are free, sponsored by the Menlo-Atherton PTA and other organizations. For more information, contact Charlene Margot at 650.868.0590. Spanish interpretation will be available.

Dine Out for Our Schools on Tuesday: Grab your kids (or book a sitter for date night) and head to one of these great Menlo Park restaurants to support the inaugural MPAEF Dine Out program this Tuesday, January 27th. A percentage of proceeds from participating restaurants Amicis East Coast Pizzeria Menlo Park, Celia's Mexican Restaurant, Jeffrey's Hamburgers, Mardini's Deli Cafe, and Menlo Grill Bistro & Bar will be generously given to the MPAEF. View restaurant hours and donation percentages on www.mpaef.org. Bon appetit!
MPAEF Board Nominations Open: Nominations are now open for the 2015-16 MPAEF Board. We welcome volunteers from all four school communities. There is a place for everyone, so whether your interests are in graphic design, event coordination, communications, campaign leadership, donor stewardship or participating as an ambassador within your school, we'd love to hear from you. Please email Miriam Huntley, MPAEF Secretary, with your nominations by Friday, January 30.
Spring Event & Auction - Now Is the Time to Submit Auction items: Donate parties, events, or experiences for adults to the 2015 MPAEF auction! Organize an over-the-top bash or an intimate dinner. Donate a Parisian brunch or a yoga workout followed by a healthy breakfast. Love to bake and cook? Get together with your friends and donate a dozen muffins each week for a month, or deliver a themed dinner to the highest bidder's house. You could also teach a knitting class, offer French lessons, or cake decorating - whatever your passion or talent you can be sure someone else would love to learn from you!
Donate an opportunity to inspire, motivate, or entertain our kids!
- Kids in Training - Let's show the kids what we do all day! Don't just bring the kids to work, put them to work. Whether you're a scientist, doctor, veterinarian, chef, artist, or public servant, open your doors and call in the class. Teach kids what makes your profession interesting by bringing a few to your office for a few hours or a whole day. Expand their horizons by showing them what you do and how you do it. Trust us, they'll love it!
- Events and Experiences for Kids - Whether fitness, art, cooking, or a once-in-a-lifetime experience, donate a chance for kids to take a break from school work and just be kids! Run the track with moms and dads and finish with a custom smoothie. Toss the pigskin or learn to shoot hoops with a Stanford player. Draw unicorns on sun art paper, organize a scavenger hunt, or take them browsing at the local bookstore followed by lunch. Whatever the idea, just organize it and they will come! Kids playing with kids builds lasting memories, as much for the children as for the adults!
