Hillview News
|
The Hour of Code: In honor of Computer Science Education Week (December 8 - 14), Hillview will be participating in the Hour of Code on Friday, December 12. Although we are in the heart of Silicon Valley, surprisingly few of our students are actively involved in computer programming/coding (although we do offer a coding elective for the first time this year!). This coming week, we are encouraging our students to come to the Performing Arts Center during Open Session on Friday to try a computer science tutorial provided by code.org, the organization that sponsors the Hour of Code. It is our hope that the Hour of Code will inspire our students to take interest in the world of code, and to realize that computer programming skills are valued and vital in the work force into which they will enter as adults.
Any parents interested in helping with the Hour of Code are invited to join us on Friday, December 12 in the Performing Arts Center from 2:05 - 3:05 to support our students in completing their activities. Please contact Willy Haug if you would like to volunteer. For more information on the event, visit Hour of Code and Computer Science Education Week.
Report Card Update :The first trimester (T1) ended on November 14 and grades are final for this grading period. You can see your student's T1 achievement grades, 3 C's grades, and teacher comments on PowerSchool. When you log in using your parent username and password (call the HV office if you need these!), you will see two tabs under "Grades and Attendance": "Grades and Attendance" and "Standards Grades." Grades and Attendance will show you the percentage and final letter grade for each class. If you click on the grade itself (in blue), you will get a higher level of detail, including any teacher comments on your student's academic performance, habits of mind, or behavior. The "Standards Grades" tab will show you the 3 C's grades of your student. Our 3 Cs are Character, Collaboration, and Commitment to Learning. We will also be sending home paper copies of your student's report cards in the coming week via USPS "snail mail." 7th Grade Apple ID's: We have been communicating to our 7th grade families about creating Apple ID's for their students. Students under 13 received an invitation from Apple (appleid@id.apple.com) to create an ID, while Mr. Haug emailed families of students 13 and over with a special request to create a school-related Apple ID in a different fashion. 7th grade parents are encouraged to create this ID as soon as possible. When students return from the winter break, they will be reconfiguring their iPads with the Apple ID and password, and students without this Apple ID will not have a functioning iPad until the ID is created. Below are links to the two letters. Please contact Mr. Haug with questions.
6th & 7th Grade iPad Collection: In order to transition over to our new Mobile Device Management (MDM) System, Casper Suite, we will be collecting 6th and 7th grade iPads on December 18. These iPads will be wiped of all content and prepared for reconfiguration, which students themselves will do upon their return on January 6. We are encouraging students to upload any important content to "the Cloud." Our students all have a Google Drive account, and access to other Apps such as Dropbox and Box. Once the iPad is wiped, the content will not be recoverable.
The new Mobile Device Management System promises to be much more useful for our needs and will represent a significant upgrade in our technological infrastructure. 8th graders will continue to have their iPads managed under the current MDM, Meraki.
A HUGE Thank You to all of the parents who volunteered their time to present the Stress Management lesson for our 7th and 8th graders. Your help was much appreciated! The next Character Education lesson will be in January, so please look for a SignUpGenius in your inbox soon!

World Language Discussion at Upcoming Board Meeting
|
The MPCSD School Board will begin a discussion about World Language Standards, and hear findings from the District's evaluation of the Spanish Immersion program at it's upcoming December 9 meeting. The agenda will include presentations from staff on possible directions and planning for World Language for 2015-16 and beyond. Also, during this meeting, the Board will continue its discussion of the District's Guiding Principals, and how they relate to the upcoming Strategic Planning process. The Guiding Principles will be the framework for the composition, structure and delivery of our educational programs.
If you would like to comment on any of these topics the Board meeting begins at 6:00 p.m. at the District Office TERC building, 181 Encinal Ave., Atherton or please feel free to write the Board at board@mpcsd.org.

MPCSD Directories Available
|
By now you should have received a copy of the MPCSD directory, compliments of the PTO, sent home with your youngest child in the district. Directories were delivered to teachers the week of Nov 10th. Extra directories or mini-versions of the Directory (they fit in your glove compartment!) are available on a first-come, first-served basis in your Front Office for $10.
The data in the directory comes from the PowerSchool Program. PowerSchool is populated with information from district registration forms filled out by parents. Parents are asked annually to update/verify that information through the InfoSnap website. If the information printed in the directory is incorrect, or if you're not listed in the Directory and wish to be, please email DistrictDirectory@mpcsd.org. The corrections will be made in the PowerSchool database and you will be asked to verify them next summer.
Thanks also to parent John Kelly and Blackstone Discovery for their outstanding service in publishing the District Directory! Questions? Please contact DistrictDirectory@mpcsd.org.

MPAEF Annual Parent Campaign
|
The Annual Parent Campaign (APC) came to a rainy finish on November 21, and the MPAEF would like to sincerely thank all the donors and volunteers who supported us throughout the campaign. The results are in: the APC brought in commitments worth $3.2 million and parent participation totaled 79% - just 15 families short of reaching our 80% participation goal. Because our community did not reach the 80% participation goal, we cannot unlock the additional $80,000 challenge gift.
The APC results represent tremendous generosity, community spirit and growth. We increased participation by 5% over last year. There was also an increase in donations at or above the $1,500 per student need. Please continue supporting the MPAEF in the coming weeks by fulfilling your pledge if you made one click here, and by doing your online holiday shopping through shop.mpaef.org to earn up to 10% for our schools at no additional cost to you.
Best wishes for a happy holiday season,
Calla Griffith & Kristin Seuell, MPAEF Co-Presidents
on behalf of the 56 parent volunteer MPAEF Board members
