PTO Announces Maui Drawing Winner!maui

Surf's up! This year, the Hillview PTO was excited to kick off our 1st annual E Komo Mai Luau. To mark this new tradition, the PTO was thrilled to hold a drawing for a 7-night stay at a Maui resort during Spring Break thanks to a generous donation from a community member! As announced at B2SN, we congratulate again our winners, Linda and Greg Druell! They are now happily planning their vacation! Thanks again to all who have donated in support of the Hillview PTO, and to all the families in attendance that made our first Luau a success. Mahalo and aloha!

Are You In RUN Coordinators Neededareyouinrun

Have you enjoyed taking part in the Are You In RUN over the past two years or the Otter Run before that? Let's help us keep it going!

We are currently seeking two parent volunteers to be Co-Chairs for the Are You In RUN on May 31.

If you are someone who has good project management skills and an interest in organizing a large scale event we need you!

Volunteer position description:

  • Work with the PTO Presidents and MPAEF Co-Chairs to identify a team representative from each of the 5 groups to make up your committee
  • With the help of the committee, assign each group to cover race logistics, marketing, sponsorship or any pre or post-race associated events
  • Project manage the committee by meeting monthly and eventually weekly as you get closer to the event and sending out status updates
  • Work with the District Council Co-Presidents to establish a race preparation timeline and profit distribution plan

Please contact Tracy Watt if you are interested in volunteering to Co-Chair this important event for our school district.

Olive Street Crosswalk Temporary Closuresidewalk

If you or your child bikes or walks to school, and uses either crosswalk at Olive Street to get to Hillview, please be advised that the Olive Street crosswalks will be closed from September 24 to 26 as the city completes a resurfacing project. The crosswalks, according to plan, will re-open for use again on Monday, September 29.

What this means for your child is that he or she will need to cross Santa Cruz at one or two other designated areas: Cotton Street or Elder Avenue. The district-provided crossing guard will be stationed at Cotton St., and students may also cross at the traffic light at Elder Ave. Please speak to your child if he or she needs to cross Santa Cruz Avenue in order to get to Hillview. This will require alternate routes both coming to and going from school. The following map will provide greater detail.

We also encourage you to review the "rules of the road" with your child: ride your bikes with traffic, and walk against traffic (including walking your bike). Skateboards and scooters should also be ridden against traffic. With the Olive street crosswalks closed, students will especially be tempted to ride their bicycles against traffic to go down to Cotton in the afternoons. Drivers coming off of Hillview and Hobart will not be expecting them.

We will be reviewing this information with the students over our morning broadcast, but we also wanted you be aware so you can review alternate -- and safe -- routes to school with your children.

Hillview Speaker Serieshvspeakers

Click here for this year's line up and put the dates on your calendar now. These events are open to all district parents and community members and take place in the Hillview Performing Arts Center. Free childcare is provided for all potty trained children.

Raising Your Teens Without Losing Your Mind - Part 2
Erik Burmeister, Principal
Hillview Middle School, PAC
 Monday, September 29
6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

From mood swings, to puberty, to the complex life changes that are a result of growing up in the 21st century, raising a healthy and responsible teenager is a task that can boggle the mind of even the most seasoned caregivers. Join Hillview Principal, Erik Burmeister, as he discusses the difference between how girls and boys react to their changing physical and emotional environments, the way in which our daily routines can affect how our kids grow and perform in and out of the classroom, and the boundaries and limits we can expect to have challenged as our kids strive to become more independent. Missed Part 1? Don't let that stop you. Part 2 will still be a very informative event. For more information, contact Jennifer Allen.

Music Department Potluck and Instrument Donationsmusicpotluck
The Hillview community is invited to the Hillview Music Potluck this Tuesday, September 23. Dinner will start around 5:45 p.m. with music being performed beginning at 6:30 p.m. Come hear the 7/8 Band, 7/8 Orchestra and Hillview Chorus perform a selection of songs. There will also be surprise guests as well as soloists. Bring something to share with 4-5 people. The dessert table will open at 7:15 p.m. Hope to see you there!

Instrument Donations
The Music Department is always happy to accept gently used instruments for its instrument "bank". These are tax deductable. So if there's a clarinet, violin or trumpet (sorry, no accordians) gathering dust under the bed, please consider donating it. Also, we are looking to replace the baby grand on the PAC stage. An estate sale donation for a high quality instrument would be very much appreciated. Please keep Hillview in mind if you know of something that comes up.
For questions, please contact Richard Vaughan.
