Mahalo

Thanks to all the students, parents and staff that made the 1st Annual E Komo Mai Luau a fun, festive back to school event.  So many small parts came together to make it a huge success, but two women and their families deserve a rousing round of applause for pulling it all together and pulling it off!  Please give a heartfelt "Mahalo" to Carol Kelly and Deanna Schroder (and their families) for spending their summer dreaming big and working hard.

Hoping to win the 7-day accommodation in Maui?  The lucky family will be announced at Back to School Night on September 11.  Good Luck!  Click here for more info.

New Parent Social

Are you a parent of an incoming 6th grader or a student new to Hillview?  Welcome to Hillview!  We are excited to spend a few hours with you at a fellow Hillview family's home.  You will meet and hear from Principal Erik Burmeister and MPCSD Superintendent Maurice Ghysels, as well as from MPAEF and Hillview PTO leaders about our amazing school and our community-funded school district.  We hope that you will join us for drinks, appetizers, and an engaging evening.

Click here for more information and to RSVP. The social, hosted by the MPAEF, will take place.on Wednesday, August 27 from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.

Please note, this is a parent-only event.

School Photos
Your student should have come home last week with information on and order forms for school portraits. They are scheduled to be taken during PE class on Monday, August 25 (but don't worry - students will have the opportunity to re-take the photo later in fall). You may fill out and pay through the envelope that came home. Or, take care of it all online. It's easy! Instructions and Hillview's Picture Day ID are below.
  1. Go to http://mylifetouch.com
  2. There, in the green "Get Started!" section, enter Hillview's picture day ID - SF714212Q0 - and your child's first name OR if you already have an account from a prior year, you can log it in the blue box area.
  3. In the green "Continue Order" box, click on the Continue button.
  4. The first section you will encounter is the "View Portraits" tab. Here you can see the many backgrounds and styles of photos that you can choose from when placing your order. This is really just information, but you may wish to take note of those background/styles that appeal to you; each has a unique number associated with it.
  5. Section 2 is the Choose Packages tab, where you choose how many and what size, and add it to your cart. You can either create a custom package using pull-down menus, or if you want less work, select from a number of pre-determined packages. There are also quite a few Special Offers that allow you to have name and grade printed on all portraits, among other bells and whistles.
  6. Once you place a package in your cart, you get to "Customize" it. This allows you to specify the background and style you like from the View Portraits tab. It's a drag and drop process.
  7. If you wish, the next section allows you to "Add More Choices," some of which include digital products, additional portraits, and much, much more.
  8. If you wish, you will then be able to purchase "Upgrades" at an additional cost (printed names on photos, retouching).
  9. You get to review your order and add more information on your child's name before checking out. At the checkout page, you'll log in by creating an account (email and password needed). You can use your account information for future years.
  10. Finally, remember to have your child bring the order confirmation to school on Monday, August 25!

Girls Softball
Registration is still open.  Practices will take place every Wednesday and Sunday.  Games may be scheduled any day of the week.  Girls may play both softball and volleyball if desired.

Team placement workouts are scheduled for Wednesday, Sept 10 in the Hillview Gym.  6th graders (3:00 - 4:20 p.m.); 7th graders (4:30 - 5:50 p.m.), 8th graders (6:00 - 7:30 p.m., if necessary).  Teams are limited to 10 players. 6th graders play games on Tuesdays.  7th/8th graders play on Mondays.  All games will be played at Arrillaga Gym in Menlo Park.  Players are expected to attend both weekly practices throughout the season.  Player registration is currently open but we can only field as many teams as we have coaches.  If you intend on registering we strongly suggest you do so immediately.  Absolute deadline is Sept 5.  Parents interested in coaching are encouraged.  We normally have about 12 teams and need at least 2 coaches per team.  Experience is not necessary.

Smartphone App For School Commutes
To help parents with planning carpools or requesting a friend to pick up a child in a pinch, KangaDo is a helpful app on Android and iPhone. There are private restricted-access groups for MPCSD schools on KangaDo, with MPCSD administering the registration to join. Parents who would like to join one of the school groups on KangaDo must provide both first and last name so we can confirm eligibility. Click here for more information.

Free Safety Vests
The MPCSD Safe Routes to School program provides free safety vests for students and parents to walk and bike to school. The improvement in visibility with a vest is remarkable, so please consider picking up vests from your school's office for everyone in your family.

Safe Routes to School
San Mateo County Safe Routes to School program funding makes possible maps of recommended routes to our MPCSD schools for students on foot and bike. Many families consult these maps when planning their walk/bike commutes. Please note the maps can only recommend a route that exists among available streets, so some recommended routes may not be suitable for your family. Click here for maps.
