Mandatory Student Re-Enrollment by June 30

All students in the Menlo Park City School District (MPCSD) must Re-Enroll for 2014 - 2015 by June 30, 2014. Our schools are severely impacted by increased enrollment, and so we are requiring parents to confirm their spot for the coming school year, as well as verify data on file, and receipt of required annual legal notices and agreements.

The District will contact all families during the week of June 9 with instructions for mandatory online Re-Enrollment for every student who will be attending grades Kindergarten through 8 this fall. If you are not planning to return to the District in the fall, please contact the District's Registrar immediately at (650) 321-7140 x 5600 or email registrar@mpcsd.org. Even families that recently registered children for Kindergarten will have to complete the online Re-Enrollment. The District will again be using Infosnap to electronically Re-Enroll students.

The District will send Re-Enrollment information by email to all families with an email address in the MPCSD database. If there is no email address on record for your family, Re-Enrollment instructions will be sent by postal mail. If internet access is an issue, a computer will be available at the Registrar's office at 181 Encinal Ave., Atherton. Please note that the databases used for PTO and District newsletters are not the same as the MPCSD Registration database. So getting this newsletter does not mean your email is on the Registrar's mailing list. If you have changed your email address in the past year, or if you would like to make sure the correct email address is in the MPCSD Registration database, please email registrar@mpcsd.org and include your name, your child(ren)'s name, school and grade.

Thank you for your cooperation with mandatory student Re-Enrollment.

Questions? Email registrar@mpcsd.org.

Decades Dances

Watch the entire 8th grade evoke the nostalgia of every decade from the 1920s onwards in a dancing, costumed extravaganza called the Decades Dances. Usually, this Hillview rite of passage is performed during the year-end Open House. This year, the 30-minute performance was held separately, but captured on video for the entire Hillview community. Catch the 30-minute toe-tapping event online.

iPad Return

School iPads of 6th and 7th graders will be collected this week. Tomorrow, Monday, June 9, 6th graders will turn in the device followed by 7th graders on Thursday, June 12.

We highly recommend that you help your student by completing an iPad and peripherals check before the turn-in date. iPads and their peripherals will be treated like school textbooks, in that if the device or any peripheral is not returned, families will be billed and report cards held. Here's what we will be looking for on return day:
  1. iPad in good working condition with no cracks in the screen or other damage
  2. iPad case/keyboard in good working condition
  3. iPad charging "block" (must not be a third party replacement)
  4. iPad charging cable
  5. keyboard charging cable

Many students follow protocol and submit tech requests when they experience any damage or loss, but others don't share this information, for whatever reason. We would prefer not to have any surprises, so if you will help your student gather all these items and make sure they are ready for return, we appreciate the support!

Healthy Kids Survey

Students in 7th grade will be taking the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) in PE during the week of June 9. The survey will give Hillview great feedback on our school climate and safety. The survey does ask questions about alcohol, tobacco, and drug use. It is anonymous, and if you do not wish for your student to participate, please contact Willy Haug.

For more information, refer to the California Healthy Kids Survey website. Please watch for a letter going home that gives more information about the survey.

Hawkapalooza!

Hawkapalooza (n) -  a wacky, crazy festival-type event for Hillview students only on the last day of school, Friday, June 13.

We need your help with line control and operating the games, all of which are easy to understand and run. (Teachers and staff will be handling the supervision/chaperoning of the event.) We will have a brief team meeting at 9 a.m. on June 13. The event will run from 9:25 - 11:45 a.m. Please stay until 12:15 p.m. to assist with clean-up along with our many, many leadership students.

Can you help? Please sign up online. Questions? Please contact Katie Angioletti.

7th Grade Parent Help for 8th Grade Graduation

A great opportunity to get a preview of Hillview Graduation! Help with the graduation reception, held at Hillview immediately after the ceremony and right before the eighth graders walk into their grad party. It is a festive event! Please donate food or your time, and have some fun. Questions? Email Kasia Lewis.

******************************

Parent chaperones are also needed to supervise the post-graduation party. If you are a 7th grade parent, consider volunteering. It's a great way to see what's in store for your child next year. Please email Heather Wall to volunteer.

Back-To-School Save The Dates

Back-to-School Luau

Out with the old, in with the new!  Please join us for a new tradition that celebrates the end of summer and the excitement of a new year! The 1st Annual E Komo Mai Luau will take place Monday, August 18 from 3 - 6 p.m. Students can pick up their schedules early and parents and siblings can enjoy catching up and sharing summer stories. (We promise the only line you will need to stand in will be for dessert!)  All District, PTO, ASB and MPAEF paperwork can be taken care of online - more information to come in the August "Back to School" Newsletter.

Back-to-School Volunteers

We need lots of volunteers for various Back-to-School Events to make those starting days run smoothly. Please take a look at some of the events and dates below and see how you would like to help out:

Back to School Events

  • Monday, August 18, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., E Komo Mai Luau: Set up and decorate for the 1st Annual Back-to-School Luau. (Formerly known as Arena Check-in)
  • Tuesday, August 19 and Wednesday, August 20, 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. (either or both days), Camp Hillview: Help serve lunches to 6th graders and teachers.
  • Friday, August 22, time tbd, Camp Hillview: Chaperone pool field trip for 6th graders.

Academy Parents

As an Academy Parent, you would work on the Academy Support Team with other parents to assist the teachers in organizing celebrations, providing volunteers, forwarding school communications and helping with field trips. You will be contacted after the academies are assigned on Monday, August 18.

Hot Lunch

Serving lunch at Hillview takes less than 12 minutes, but it is great way to connect with the kids.  Volunteers arrive 20 minutes early to set up and stay 10 minutes to clean up and stack the lunch bins. It's less than an hour commitment a week and a fun way to meet other parents and see your kids and their friends at school.

If interested in any of these opportunities, please contact volunteer@hillviewpto.org.

New After-School Classes for Fall 2014

Speech and Debate Team

Take part in an exciting experience where you will have a great time while learning powerful tools to help with taking leadership roles, giving persuasive and effective speeches, as well as presentations. Students will benefit through academic success, while making lasting friendships and learning indispensable life skills! This class will focus on developing critical thinking, verbal skills, time management, self-discipline, creativity, note taking, writing, vocabulary, team work, sportsmanship, ethics and confidence. The team will be led by Coach Brier who has been working with Encinal and Oak Knoll students. More information will be in the August PTO newsletters.

Are You In RUN for Education
presented by Nelson Roberts Investment Advisors

Congratulations to all of the "Are You In RUN" runners, walkers and volunteers! Your support along with our fabulous business and family sponsors raised over $100,000 for our school district! We are all so fortunate to have raised this much-needed funding for our schools.

Your dedication to your school is what brought our entire district and community together. We had close to 1,500 registered runners and over 100 volunteers helping us with this event this year. It is your commitment to our schools and your support that makes us all so proud to be a part of this community. THANK YOU!

Have you seen the race results?  Check them out at areyouin.mpcsd.org!

It took a village to manage, coordinate and organize the RUN this year but key people who contributed to its success this year include Ben Ewers, Allison Chao, Domonique Matthews, Christa Olson, Denise Henry, Clint Chao, Lisa Lajous, Amy Thornborrow, Sam Bacic, Molly Gibbons, Kim Hinshaw, Linda MacDonald, Tracy Sartorio, Jennie Lang, Jen Bartle, Amy Coolican, Mike Shoup, Alison Matthews, Amy Courson, Jill Leonard, Susannah Hill, Gina Ryan, Diane Sonsini and Betsy Muhlner and the many, many volunteers at each school (including friends & family members) who helped out pre-race, race day and post-race.
