District Email Update
|
MPCSD's old email server, Zimbra, crashed on Wednesday morning, May 21, and our tech department decided to transition over to an institutional Gmail account. We've made the transition very swiftly, and all staff have been able to receive and send emails since Friday afternoon, May 23. If you sent anything to us between Wednesday morning, May 21, and Friday afternoon, May 23, we may not have received that communication. Please reach out again and contact us if we did not respond to you during that window of time.

After School Programs and Late Bus
|
This coming week, the week of June 2, is the last week for all after-school programs, including Homework Center, Math Clinic, Hawk Stars, and Flight School. The last day for these programs will be Thursday, June 5. In addition, the late bus will make its last run on Thursday, June 5.
|
Track and Field Days
|
Parent volunteers are needed for the 7th and 8th grade track days on Wednesday, June 4 and Thursday, June 5.
Your son or daughter will have their track meet during their PE period on either Wednesday or Thursday during their block period.
If you can help with keeping times and distances, and recording scores, please sign up online.

Teacher and Staff Gift Fund
|
This is the last week that you can give to the 13th Annual Teacher Staff Gift Fund! Parent volunteers have organized a centralized fund to recognize more than 70 Hillview teachers and staff members. You are encouraged to contribute at your comfort level. All proceeds are used to purchase gift cards for delivery on the last day of school. Please act by Friday, June 6. If your contribution is not received by midnight June 6, it might not be counted and might be returned. Contribute online or mail your check pay to the order of this year's fund coordinator: Kathy Koenig, 1751 Croner Avenue, Menlo Park, CA, 94025. Savvy PayPal users can avoid processing fees using PayPal and choosing Friends and Family; the email address for the fund account is kathy.koenig@gmail.com. Don't worry, your parent volunteer team will receive a record of your gift! You will receive an acknowledgement. Thanks in advance for recognizing your incredible Hillview crew!

iPad Return
|
Your student's iPad, along with peripherals, will be collected between Friday, June 6 and Thursday, June 12, depending on his or grade level. Students in 8th grade will come first, with their iPads being turned in on Friday, June 6. Students in 6th grade will follow on Monday, June 9. Students in 7th grade will be the last group, on Thursday, June 12.
We highly recommend that you help your student by completing an iPad and peripherals check before the turn-in date. iPads and their peripherals will be treated like school textbooks, in that if the device or any peripheral is not returned, families will be billed and report cards held. Here's what we will be looking for on return day: - iPad in good working condition with no cracks in the screen or other damage
- iPad case/keyboard in good working condition
- iPad charging "block" (must not be a third party replacement)
- iPad charging cable
- keyboard charging cable
Many students follow protocol and submit tech requests when they experience any damage or loss, but others don't share this information, for whatever reason. We would prefer not to have any surprises, so if you will help your student gather all these items and make sure they are ready for return, we appreciate the support!
|
Healthy Kids Survey
|
Students in 7th grade will be taking the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) in PE during the week of June 9. The survey will give Hillview great feedback on our school climate and safety. The survey does ask questions about alcohol, tobacco, and drug use. It is anonymous, and if you do not wish for your student to participate, please contact Willy Haug.
For more information, refer to the California Healthy Kids Survey website. Please watch for a letter going home that gives more information about the survey.

Hawkapalooza!
|
Hawkapalooza (n) - a wacky, crazy festival-type event for Hillview students only on the last day of school, Friday, June 13. We need your help with line control and operating the games, all of which are easy to understand and run. (Teachers and staff will be handling the supervision/chaperoning of the event.) We will have a brief team meeting at 9 a.m. on June 13. The event will run from 9:25 - 11:45 a.m. Please stay until 12:15 p.m. to assist with clean-up along with our many, many leadership students. Can you help? Please sign up online. Questions? Please contact Katie Angioletti.

7th Grade Parent Help for 8th Grade Graduation
|
A great opportunity to get a preview of Hillview Graduation! Help with the graduation reception, held at Hillview immediately after the ceremony and right before the eighth graders walk into their grad party. It is a festive event! Please donate food or your time, and have some fun. Questions? Email Kasia Lewis.
******************************
Parent chaperones are also needed to supervise the post-graduation party. If you are a 7th grade parent, consider volunteering. It's a great way to see what's in store for your child next year. Please email Heather Wall to volunteer.

Summer Hosting
|
If you are interested in having a French or Spanish student stay with you this summer, the FACES program is looking to place them in our community. In each case, the program only calls for immersion, and you need not take excursions with the student to show them the area, as was the case with the French students in April and May. It's like having a new brother or sister in the house! FACES is looking for placement for the following: - 20 French students, July 8 through August 2.
- 4 boys, ages 15-16, from the Basque Region of Spain, June 24 through July 12.
Email Amy Kingsley for more info and for the host application.

Pay Tribute to a Graduate or Teacher
Looking for a special way to remember your student's time at Encinal, Oak Knoll or Hillview? Want to show your appreciation to a teacher or staff member who has made a lasting impact on your student? Consider a gift to the MPAEF Endowment in their name. Your honoree will be acknowledged as a Tribute recipient for the Class of 2014.
What's the Endowment? A fund that has contributed over $500,000 to our schools and is designed to benefit the District for generations. As a restricted revenue source, the Endowment is solely dedicated to fostering academic excellence, especially in areas of writing, math, science and music through professional development, particularly teacher leadership and design thinking innovation.
For more information on the Endowment, visit the MPAEF website.
To make a Tribute gift, visit http://mpaef.org/donate-to-endowment.

Phys Ed Notes
|
- The final day of dress for all students will be either Wednesday, June 4 or Thursday, June 5 depending on which block day they have PE. Students are to clear their lockers so they can be steam cleaned during the summer. Students wishing to discard their PE uniforms can deposit them in the locker rooms. Locks should be locked to the lockers with the doors left open. PE teachers will clear each student.
- Diabolofest: Last week, Devin Holt, a professional Diabolo juggler, demonstrated numerous tricks to all Phys Ed students. Students were able to take turns using the diabolos. There will be diabolos available in the PE offices this week for a bargain price of $20 (normally $60). Instructional videos will also be available for $10. See Ms. Gee if interested.
- Congratulations to the 8th graders who put on terrific performances of the annual Decades Dances. Following months of rehearsing and decade appropriate costumes, performers lit up the PAC with energy and enthusiasm. Special thanks to behind the scenes efforts of Mr. Eaton who wrote the introduction; Ms. Gee for backstage organization; Ms. Kellam and Ms. Salem for amazing choreography; and Mr. Crabb and his crew for lighting and sound. It was truly a team effort.
Questions regarding Phys Ed should be directed to Mr. Bell, Mr. Eaton, Ms. Gee or Ms. Salem. Phone: 326-4341 ext 2601 Bell, ext 2602 Eaton, ext 2603 Gee, ext 2604 Salem.

After School Sports
|
After school track is over for the school year. If you haven't already, please return your jersey to the Phys Ed Dept. We thank all coaches, parents and players for their part in making this a very successful season.
Summer League Basketball is also available for interested players. You can sign up as a team or as an individual. Tournament team meeting: There will be an information meeting regarding next year's Tournament Team Volleyball and Basketball Programs on Wednesday, June 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the Hillview PAC. Parents of this year's 6th and 7th grade girl volleyball players, and 7th grade boy and girl basketball players that are interested in knowing about the programs should attend this meeting. The volleyball tournament team probably will not be able to continue unless there are parents will to help coordinate. Basketball programs have a better chance of being covered. Mr. Bell is NOT the coordinator of either, but will lead the meeting and explain steps needed to keep these programs going. Menlo-Atherton boys basketball coach Nicky Fogel will be holding three summer basketball camps for 2nd through 8th grade boys. Nicky Fogel is a Hillview alum and the head assistant on the M-A varsity boys' basketball team. Click on this link for registration information. After School Sports questions should be directed to Mr. Bell or call (650) 326-4341 ext 2601.

Sequoia Union High School District News
|
Citizens for Sequoia Union High School - Yes on A. The Sequoia Union High School District has a bond up for vote on the Tuesday, June 3 election. The district's great high schools have drawn families to their communities, causing an increase in student enrollment by 20 percent over the last 12 years and are expected to grow another 20 percent in the next seven years. Measure A will provide additional classrooms and labs, as well as updated technology to help the district continue its excellent academic programs as student enrollment grows. Please visit the Yes on A website to learn about Measure A and how you can help. If you have additional questions about Yes on A, please email Jennifer Le.
The Hillview PTO endorses Measure A.
******************************
Is your 8th grader attending Menlo-Atherton High School next year? If so, please sign up to be on the administrative support volunteer list. There are no specific obligations. When the M-A Administration needs parent volunteers, we send out an email. If the volunteer opportunity fits in your schedule, you sign up; otherwise no need to respond.
A sampling of events that use lots of parent volunteers are Arena Check-In, textbook distribution, schedule distribution, AP sign-ups, and AP test proctoring. Volunteering for Administrative Support is fun, a great way to meet other parents and find out what's happening at M-A. To be added to the list, please add your contact information to the M-A Admin Support Committee form.
