Smarter Balance Field Test

Last week students prepared for and began taking the Smarter Balanced Field Test. The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) develops the assessment materials associated with the new Common Core State Standards, and the State of California has decreed that this year will be a "field test," which some describe as a "test of the test." Scores from this year's test will never be reported, and the results will be used by the state to improve the system for 2014 - 2015, when scores of individual students will be reported (school scores, in the form of API, will not be published until the 2015 - 2016 school year).

Unlike the old STAR paper and and #2 pencil testing system, SBAC is a technology-rich, adaptive test that our students are taking on their iPads. Teachers generate a "Session ID" from their computers, and students sign in to the system on their iPads. Once in the test, students navigate from item to item, using the embedded universal tools in the testing environment to demonstrate their knowledge. Both the content and the ways in which students demonstrate their knowledge are different than how they did so on STAR. We encourage you to explore this interface on your student's iPad (they can teach you how to turn on Guided Access and use the Air Secure Test app), or you can go to this link to look at practice materials on your laptop or desktop computer.

You may also be interested in exploring the "Mini-Lessons" we had student complete in order to be prepared for the start of testing on Friday:
Mini-Lesson 1 - Turning on Guided Access and logging on the testing site using the Air Secure Test app
Mini-Lesson 2 - Introductory Video and Practice Test
Mini-Lesson 3 - "Rules and Tools" - General Testing Rules and Embedded Universal Tools, Training Test

We've learned a lot in getting ready for the field test, and it went really well on Friday. Students found the interface at times a little glitchy, but for the most part they were able to respond to the testing items. Ask them how it went! Please direct any questions to Mr. Haug.

We need everyone's participation to make this event a success; please volunteer your time or food item. Questions? Email Kasia Lewis

WEB Program

Attention 7th grade parents!

Last week, students were introduced to Hillview's Where Everybody Belongs (WEB) program. WEB, a nationwide program, is part of the transition program for incoming 6th graders. Its goal is to help 6th graders adjust to Hillview and help them achieve success in their first year of middle school. The WEB program helps run Camp Hillview and provides year-long support to the 6th graders.

We are currently recruiting WEB leaders. Students interested in becoming a WEB leader should fill out an application, obtain required teacher signatures, and turn in the application by Friday, May 9 at 3:30 pm. Applicants will be interviewed the week of May 12-16 in group interviews. Leaders are chosen based on their willingness to lead others and try new things. WEB leaders should also be kind, enthusiastic, and a positive role model. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Watts, Mr. Sullivan or Mrs. Mathenia.

Are We Pushing Too Hard, Race To Nowhere Film and Panel
Wednesday, May 14 at 6:30 pm, Hillview PAC

In an age where our kids are over-scheduled and pressured to perform at increasingly higher levels, Race to Nowhere highlights the growing issues of cheating, anxiety-induced illness, and withdrawal from academics, leading to a new generation of underprepared college students.  With the help of world-renowned psychologists and education experts, this film is aimed at helping to change the broken system so that we can raise students to be excited and inspired not only in our schools, but beyond as well. The film will be followed by an expert panel discussing the difficult balancing act of raising teens in today's high-stakes world.

Video recordings of past speakers from the Hillview Speaker Series are viewable online
