Mini-Courses Updates

 

The Amazing Race is coming to Hillview! We have a wide array of activities, including two days of exploring San Francisco, one day at Stanford and two days at Hillview. The challenges are in place, celebrity guests are coming to inspire and cheer on the contestants, and those crazy food challenges are ready to satisfy even the pickiest eater. The only things we still need are YOU - our adult chaperones!   

 

We still need chaperones for the following days:

  • Monday, March 17 at Hillview - 8 volunteers
  • Tuesday, March 18 in San Francisco/Pier 39 Ghirardelli - 6 volunteers
  • Wednesday, March 19  in San Francisco/North Beach - 7 volunteers
  • Thursday, March 20 at Stanford University - 1 volunteer

Eat Your Heart Out would like to thank all those who have stepped up to lend us equipment.  We still need to borrow the following items from the Hillview community:  3 ice cream makers, 3 toaster ovens, 1 blender, 1 rice maker. If you have any of these items to lend by Wednesday, March 12, please contact Nancy Kessler. We would be very grateful and will return all items cleaned by Tuesday, March 25.

 


Candidates for District Council 2014-2015
 
The Menlo Park City School District Council is seeking candidates for its officer and administrative chair positions for the 2014-2015 school year. The purpose of the District Council is to foster cooperative relationships among the MPAEF, the School Board, the District and the Laurel, Encinal, Oak Knoll and Hillview PTOs.

Available positions include: District Lunch Coordinator, Programming (Parent Ed) Coordinator, and Recognition (Service Awards) Coordinator, among others. For a complete list of District Council positions, please visit the district web site here.

Volunteers for Hillview PTO
 
The Hillview PTO is looking for volunteers to serve on the PTO Board and in other key volunteer roles for the 2014-2015 school year. The Board, along with other parent volunteers, works with Hillview's administrative and teaching staff to create and support vital school programs and events.

8th Grade Family Life Education Series

 

8th graders will be participating in a Family Life education series taught by your student's science teacher in the Spring. The Family Life letter has been posted on Edmodo for your 8th grade students. If you do NOT want your child to participate in this curriculum please print and return the form to the office by Friday, March 28. Please click here for the form.

 


Phys Ed Notes
  • Intramural sports will continue Monday - Wednesday with indoor soccer. Any student who shows up within 15 minutes of lunch will be allowed to play. No intramurals during Mini-Course week. 
  • The Phys Ed Dept requests a doctor's note if a student is unable to participate in PE class for more than three consecutive days.
  • Student lockers must be locked at all times except when changing. If a locker is missing its lock, the cost to replace a lock is $10. 
  • Students should take care of their personal property and lock up valuables in lockers. 
  • Activities for the upcoming third trimester include Mini Sessions, Decades Dancing for 8th graders, state mandated fitness testing for 7th graders, and Greek Olympics for 6th graders.

After School Sports

 

Basketball: The season ends with playoffs for all grade levels this week except 6th grade girls who finished a very exciting season last week. The playoff schedule is as follows: 6th grade boys on Wednesday; 7th grade girls on Thursday; and 7th grade boys on Friday. The 8th grade playoff schedule includes Round One on Monday and Finals on Tuesday. 

 

Tennis: Regular practice begins this week. Varsity A and Varsity B teams have been selected. Varsity A players practice on Mondays and Fridays. Varsity B players practice Tuesdays and Thursdays. Wednesday will be a match day beginning March 26. 

 

Track: Registration is open at sportability.com/hillview. Deadline for registration is Friday, April 4. Track will begin on Monday, April 21. For more information, click here

Menlo Park Friends of the Library Book Sale. Saturday, March 15 from 10 - 2 p.m. and Sunday, March 16 from 12 - 2 p.m. $5 bag sale: patrons may fill up their purchased bags with as many books that they can fit.

What To Do With The Mad You Feel. Free Webinar (all ages) with Claire Marie Beery, MA. Tuesday, March 25, 12 - 1 p.m. It's a myth that you can be a perfect parent and will always feel love toward your child. The reality is babies cry, you don't get enough sleep, toddlers say "no," kids disobey, and brothers and sisters fight. Explore perspectives on anger and self-control for both yourself and your child and learn ways to respond that leave everyone feeling better. Preregistration required. Register here.

Estate Planning for Families with Special Needs. Wednesday, March 26, 7 - 9 p.m.
A properly crafted estate plan can provide the protection your family needs if and when something happens to you. Learn about why and how to create a revocable living trust, the difference between a trust and a will, how to protect your children's inheritance, choosing the right trustee, nominating guardians for your minor children, planning if you become ill or disabled or if your extended family is overseas, and specialized planning if a child or loved one has special needs. Face processing research. Stanford Vision lab is conducting a research study on face processing and is looking for typically developing children 7-12 years old as a control group for our research on Autism Spectrum Disorder. If you are interested in having your children participate, please contact [email protected].

After School Track Program. Open to all MPCSD students in 4th-8th grade regardless of experience or perceived ability. There will be workouts and track meets and students will compete in individual and team competitions against other neighboring schools (e.g., La Entrada and Corte Madera). Coaching staff will be headed by La Entrada teacher, Tanya Rianda, and includes Oak Knoll teachers, Michelle Tom, Hillview Basketball Coach Bob Beckstrom, as well as others.

The schedule is as follows:

Mondays: 4/21, 4/28, 5/5, 5/12, 5/19
Tuesday: 5/27
Wednesdays: 4/23, 4/30, 5/7, 5/14, 5/21, 5/28

All workouts from 6-7:30 p.m. at Menlo-Atherton High School, except May 12 and 14 which will be Hillview School.

Students are expected to participate in these workouts and meets consistently. Optional parent meeting on the MA track bleachers at 7:30 p.m. following the first practice on April 21. Registration deadline: Friday, April 4.
 
Menlowe Ballet's "Transcendence", April 4-6. Following an acclaimed fall season, Menlowe Ballet returns to the stage with Transcendence at the Menlo-Atherton PAC. Featuring works by Artistic Director Michael Lowe and guest choreographer Dennis Nahat. Tickets may be purchased at www.menloweballet.org, or by calling 800-595-4TIX (4849).

Peninsula Youth Theatre is conducting auditions for "Oliver!" on March 8 and 9. Students ages 8-18 are welcome, and all who audition will be cast.
