Mini Courses will be here before we know it! Planning is well underway and the campus is buzzing with anticipation. On Friday, January 10, students received their mini course placement slips. Please ask them about the course they will experience. We are pleased that all students received one of their top choices. If your child did not receive a mini course placement slip, please have him or her ask Mrs. Garagozzo in the front office.

Hillview PTO Nominating Committee

Nominating Committee for Hillview PTO 2014-2015 Board Executive Committee

Six parent volunteers are needed to identify and nominate the 2014-2015 Hillview PTO Executive Board Members.  Three parent volunteers from the west side of town (Oak Knoll) and three parent volunteers from the east side of town (Encinal) will meet a few times between February and April to identify potential candidates for the Hillview PTO Board executive committee slate for the 2014-2015 school year.  You may nominate yourself or someone you know to this committee.  Please email your nominations to Aimee Paquin or Pam Fernandes.

On Tuesday, January 14 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., the Eighth Grade Graduation Committee invites you to Casual Dining Day and Night at Jeffrey's Hamburgers, 888 El Camino Real, Menlo Park, CA (650-322-1959). Dine-in or take-out (no deliveries).

Present this flyer and Jeffrey's will generously donate 10% of your food and beverage purchases to the Eighth Grade Graduation Fund. This fundraiser is only valid at Jeffrey's in Menlo Park.

iPad Rollout

Last Friday, the 7th graders attended an iPad Expectations Assembly, and were sent home with some important tasks and documents that must be completed in order for your student to receive an iPad on Monday morning. (If your child missed the assembly, make-up sessions will be held on Monday and Tuesday at lunch.) On Monday, January 13, before school begins, students will report to their 5th period teachers, who will exchange a MPCSD-issued iPad for the properly completed paperwork.

We did our very best to explain the process you must go through to have your student receive an iPad on Monday morning, but just in case anything was "lost in translation" or not delivered, the three main tasks are as follows:

  • Insure your student's iPad OR agree to self-insure
  • With your student, read and sign the iPad Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)
  • Return the AUP with proof of insurance, OR return the AUP with your initials, agreeing to self-insure

For information on what to do, please click on this LINK. It will give you a copy of the "Issuance Procedures" (page 1) and directions for where to go online to get the insurance (page 2). You will note that each student received a personalized letter with specific info on the device number, serial number, and password. However, you can still get the insurance as long as you have your student's 6-digit student ID (this can be found on PowerSchool). For those of you who choose the insurance (we recommend that you do), you will need to print out your receipt and return it with the signed AUP. If you choose to self-insure, you only need to initial that space on the AUP.

For a copy of the iPad AUP, click this LINK. It details iPad care, safety & security, and use guidelines. The third page of this document is the signature page that we need (along with proof of insurance, if you choose it), in order to issue the iPad to your student on Monday morning.

We are sorry that we will be unable to issue iPads on Monday to any student who does not have completed paperwork. But never fear - your student will be highly motivated to get this taken care of quickly.

It's an exciting time at Hillview! Students received their mini-course assignments this past week, and now we are rolling out iPads to our 7th graders. Within the month, we'll have news about the process for our 6th graders to receive iPads, as well as the "drivers license" program they will need to complete.

For a link to the iPad presentation the 7th graders saw on Friday, please click here. Please email Mr. Haug with any questions.

MENLO-ATHERTON PARENT EDUCATION SERIES

Award-winning Documentary Film: "In 500 Words or Less"
 Thursday, February 6, 7 - 9:00 p.m.
Menlo-Atherton Performing Arts Center

Going to college is a rite of passage for many American high school students, but the process can be overwhelming: college fairs, SATs, tours, applications. And then there's the personal essay. How does a seventeen year old define herself to total strangers when she's only beginning to discover who she really is? And how can he or she be expected to do it in an essay of 500 words or less?

This honest film is a "must see" for any parent or student starting or looking ahead to the college application process. "In 500 Words or Less" takes you inside the lives of four very different students as they spend their last year with their families trying to figure out who they are and who they want to be.  The documentary serves as a portrait of four of the nearly 1.5 million families who go through this process each year. While race, geography and socio-economic status affected how they got here, their stories converge as they all juggle acceptance, rejection, decision-making and letting go.

"In 500 Words or Less" is highly recommended by NACAC, the National Association for College Admission Counseling and featured at a recent national conference.

Admission is FREE and M-A Parent Education Series events are sponsored by the Menlo-Atherton PTA and the Sequoia Healthcare District. A great family event!

For more information, please contact Charlene Margot, Parent Education Series Program Director (650.868.0590)
