Mini Course Update
|
Mini-course planning was underway even during the Winter Break. Some of the guest speakers recently confirmed are the Cupcake Wars winners for the baking course and an astronaut who worked on the Apollo missions for the Aviation course. Check back here in the coming weeks as other exciting developments take place. All students will be notified of their assigned course this coming Friday, January 10. Great news -- all students were able to get one of their first choices.

Phys Ed Notes

- Intramural sports will continue Tues and Wednesday this week: indoor soccer will be the activity. Next week we'll begin a basketball tournament.
- New trimester classes for 7th/8th graders will be based on interest and continue throughout the trimester. Activities include: team sports and juggling; games that come alive, non-traditional games; and Hillview on the Move.
- As the weather continues to be cooler we remind families students are encouraged to wear any type of sweatshirt and/or sweatpants to PE class over their required PE uniform.
- The Phys Ed Dept requests notes from a doctor if a student is unable to participate in PE class for any extended period of time (more than 3 or 4 consecutive days).

Chess Team
|
How do you sharpen your mind and boost your IQ while having fun? Chess! Learn new strategies from an experienced teacher, hang out and challenge friends and work as a team in tournaments. The Hillview Middle Chess Team is being offered by Bay Area Chess. The team will meet Mondays, 3:15 - 4:15 p.m. from January 13 - May 19. Cost: $225. You may try out one class free! Class limited to 10 students. Register online.

After School Sports
|
After School Basketball: After School Basketball games for all grade levels continue this week. 8th grade games are played at either Hillview, La Entrada, Woodside Elementary or Corte Madera. Students in 6th and 7th grade continue league games this week. 6th grade girls play on Tuesday, 6th grade boys on Wednesday, 7th girls on Thursday and 7th boys on Friday. Too many players are missing basketball practices. They should be committed to their coaches and team mates. Please make every effort to attend. If practice must be missed, make sure coaches know as soon as possible.
Boys and girls basketball tournament team: Tournament team basketball continues for 8th grade girls and boys this month. The boys will play in the Evergreen and St Simons tournaments. The girls will play in the St Simons tournament. The girls have won two tournaments in a row.

With school, sports, extracurricular clubs and friends, our kids are constantly pressed for time and sleep seems to always be neglected. Dr. Devin Prouty, a psychologist at SRI and parent in the MPCSD community, is well versed in the ever-changing sleep patterns and circadian rhythms of our growing teens. Attendees will leave with a blueprint for how to adapt to the hormonal changes that leave us with students struggling to stay alert and engaged day in and day out.

MPCSD Transportation Dept Hosting Town Hall Meetings on Traffic & Safety
The District's Transportation Department warmly invites families and community members to two "Town Hall" meetings for updates and Q&A about traffic, student commutes, safety and parking at MPCSD campuses. Ask questions of the Public Works and Police departments of Atherton and Menlo Park as well as San Mateo County. Topics will include projects and news relating to how students, volunteers and parents get to and from school safely and easily.

Eric Carle's art and literature workshop, Sunday, January 12 at 1p.m.
Join Betsy Halaby, formerly with Art in Action, in an art project inspired by Eric Carle's work. In addition to learning about Eric Carle's literature and illustrations, kids will create their own piece of art. Registration required. Please email Michelle Burnham by January 4.
