7th/8th Grade Dance

The 7th and 8th grade dance is Friday, October 25 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Only Hillview 7th and 8th graders can attend - please have your child bring his/her student ID. This is NOT a costume dance, however, students wishing to dress up for our Halloween theme should remember that no masks or props are allowed to the dance.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and we ask all parents be ready for pick-up promptly at 8:30 p.m. Dress code applies to all Spirit Days and dances. Any student arriving after 7 p.m. will need a parent to walk them to the Performing Arts Center entrance. Any student wishing to leave early must also have a parent meet them at the entrance to the Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $6 for non-ASB card holders and $4 for ASB card holders. Tickets will be on sale during Spirit Week at lunch in room E-1, the blue student center in the quad. Tickets will also be sold at the door, but we STRONGLY encourage students to pre-purchase their tickets to gain entrance faster as well as allowing us to prepare for the right number of students. Thank you!

For more information, please contact Mr. Darmanin.

Magazine Drive

As many of you know, our Student Council (a.k.a. "ASB") does wonderful things for each and every student here at Hillview Middle School. This year will be no exception. Next Tuesday, October 22, we will begin our annual magazine drive with Great American. This two-week fundraiser is the only student-led fundraiser other than the ASB Card sales and ensures we can continue to build a world-class activities program to match our world-class education. The magazine brochure offers more than 750 titles, and in addition, there are more than 1,700 items (magazines AND gift items) available online. With your help, 40 - 50 percent of every dollar spent on these quality products will stay with our school.

For those families who do not wish to order magazines, you can support ASB with a $20 donation. For every $20 in donations collected, that student will earn credit for one order sale. For example, if a student collects $60 in donations instead of magazine orders, that student will earn credit for three orders. We provide this option for families who would prefer to support ASB's effort to fundraise without having to make a purchase. Either way, Hillview's Student Council greatly appreciates your support!

The profits we earn this fall will go directly toward ASB-sponsored projects that benefit every student including: spirit weeks, color competitions and prizes, Hawkaplooza, the Block H program, the Student Center, motivational speakers, dances and much more!

Student participation is totally voluntary, but students can earn great prizes and have a ton of fun supporting their school. Parents can, if they wish, support us by ordering magazines for home or as gifts and share the ordering opportunity with friends and family.

Hillview's magazine drives runs Tuesday, October 22 - Tuesday, November 5.

Get started at gaschoolstore.com. Use Hillview's Online ID #: 2642593.

Yes! Gender Matters

with Leonard Sax, M.D., Ph.D.

Tuesday, October 22

6:30 p.m., Hillview PAC

In his compelling workshop, Dr. Sax delves into the ways that gender affects the emotional challenges that children face in and outside of the classroom. An excellent addendum to his books Why Gender Matters, Boys Adrift and Girls on the Edge, this presentation aims to arm parents with new strategies and tactics for helping their kids thrive in an increasingly competitive and stressful world, no matter their gender.

Free-Range Kids

How to Raise Safe, Self-Reliant Children

with Lenore Skenzay

Sunday, November 3

6:30 p.m., Hillview PAC

Lenore Skenazy is "America's Worst Mom." (Google it!) The New York City columnist-turned-reality TV show host got that title after letting her 9-year-old son take the subway, alone. In response to the enormous media blowback, she founded the book and blog, "Free-Range Kids," which launched the anti-helicopter parenting movement. She's a graduate of Yale and lives in NYC with her husband and two sons, who actually think she's what Freud would have considered a "good enough" mom.

Thank a Teacher

Our Hillview teachers and staff are working very hard to continually improve our children's experience at school. From adopting the new Common Core standards, to adjusting to the block schedule, to planning the exciting new mini-course program and more, Hillview's teachers are going above and beyond this year.

If you have a special story about how a Hillview staff member has enriched your child's school life, please email it to Mr. Burmeister. He loves to share these anecdotes at staff meetings to keep our beloved teachers motivated and mindful of the ultimate goal of all their hard work - our children's success.
