Thank You For Supporting Hillview

The Hillview PTO and the MPAEF say THANK YOU to all of our families and staff who have come together during the past six weeks to support Hillview. Your donations to the Hillview PTO and the MPAEF make a real difference in the education that Hillview provides to our children.

Hillview Magnet

Your donations to the Hillview PTO are still coming in and being counted. We are close to our goal, but every donation matters and will help get us get there. So, if you haven't donated yet, please donate now. By next week's newsletter we will have our tallies in and will report the results. THANK YOU AGAIN to all the Hillview families and staff who supported Hillview by donating to the PTO.

MPAEF Logo 2005

THANK YOU to our families and staff who have already donated, pledged or initiated monthly payments to the MPAEF. The Annual Parent Campaign closes on Thursday, November 21 and we are approximately 25 percent of the way toward reaching this year's goal.

Today the MPAEF is launching its PLEDGE DRIVE. We will soon be contacting families who haven't yet made a commitment to the MPAEF and asking them to pledge their support.

The MPAEF is also excited to announce THE FOUNDATION 50 CHALLENGE! A $50,000 bonus will be donated by an anonymous group of families if 50 families donate or pledge -- for the first time -- at the $1,500 per student funding level between today and Friday, October 25.

We look forward to making another big step toward reaching our goals during the month of October. Click here to make your commitment today!

SamTrans Update

We continue to listen to feedback about our morning and afternoon SamTrans routes, and are working with SamTrans to improve the ridership experience. Several parents communicated to us that the morning Route 82 was overcrowded. We have been counting students each morning, and note that there are about 52 - 54 students each day. SamTrans has confirmed that this number is acceptable in terms of the bus's capacity (63). While some students may need to stand, we are confident that riding conditions are safe. We have asked that a bus with a few more seats be provided so that fewer students will need to stand.

School Safety Plan

This past week, students and staff engaged in our first emergency drill of the year, a fire drill. Students did a great job of listening to staff and following their designated evacuation routes to the initial meeting points around campus.

In the situation of an actual fire, students would have re-congregated in our assembly area (either on or off campus) and waited for parents to pick them up. If you haven't discussed with your child what your family's plan in an actual emergency would be, now is a great time to do so.

For example, does your child know who is likely to pick him or her up? Would it be a parent, or one of your designated emergency contacts? Does your child know what other adults are authorized to pick him or her up in an emergency? Does your child know the best way to stay in communication with you during an emergency? Remember, phone lines may not be functional, but texting services may be viable.

Hillview's emergency operations plan is being revised and will be submitted to the Menlo Park City School District Board of Education by Thursday, October 17, after which time it will be available for public inspection.

We are looking for a parent to serve as one of our lunchtime supervisors. This is a paid position. It may be a Monday - Friday commitment, or possible only Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Private High Schools

If you are in 8th grade and interested in applying to a private high school for 9th grade, please plan on attending a SHORT meeting on Friday, October 4 in the PAC at 12:20 p.m. If you miss the meeting, stop by the office and pick up the information in writing.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

A reminder that on Tuesday - Friday, October 15 - 18, Hillview students will have minimum days, with school ending at 11:45 a.m. On Monday, October 14, there will be no school for students.

On those minimum days, the afternoons will be devoted to conferences, and after teachers schedule their higher priority conferences, parents will have the opportunity to sign up online for the remaining slots. We will be unable to accommodate every request for a conference, but we will do our best.

Stay tuned for a conferencing "blast" that will provide all the details about when and how to sign up.
