SamTrans Route 84 Solution
|
With the assistance of the SamTrans scheduling department and the cooperation of Encinal School, we have a solution for the Route 84 morning bus starting Monday, September 16.
This bus has been arriving at Hillview too late to allow students to comfortably make it on time to their first class of the day. We looked into the issue and discovered that Hillview's Route 84 is the same bus as Encinal's earlier Route 88. The 88 was arriving late to Encinal, which in turn made the 84 departure to Hillview late. The fix is that now the Route 88 will be starting its run five minutes earlier.
For Hillview families, what this means is that the Route 84 will now depart from Encinal at 7:52 a.m. All subsequent stops will be five minutes earlier than the original schedule (Middlefield Road and Lane Place at 7:59 a.m., Merrill Street and Santa Cruz Avenue at 8:06 a.m.)
While the final stop at Hillview is technically an 8:14 a.m. drop-off, we anticipate that with crosstown traffic, it may be closer to 8:20 a.m. However, this schedule still gives students ample time to walk calmly to class.

Picture Make-up Day
|
Hillview's annual Picture Make-up/Retake Day will be on Monday, September 23. On this day, during their PE classes, students will have the opportunity to either:
- Take a portrait if they did not attend one of the daytime Arena Check-ins in August
- Have a re-take portrait if the picture was not to your family's liking
Remember, if you want a retake, you need only have your student bring the original, unused photo packet on Monday, September 23 and it can be exchanged for the new packet.
Even if students do not wish to order a photo packet, we still need to take the picture for our ID cards. Flyers will be going home on Monday, and additional flyers will be found in the office. We will be printing the ASB designation on the ID cards of all students whose families have purchased the ASB card. If you would still like to purchase an ASB card, please visit the PTO website and scroll down to the ASB payment section.

Ten Reasons to Support Your HILLVIEW PTO and the MPAEF
10. Library books and our librarians, Tracy Piombo and Theresa Fox: They foster a love of reading for our middle school kids, as well as a safe and quiet study environment for those who want it.
9. Community-building events: They're fun for everyone and make our Hillview community stronger.
8. School communications: Helping you keep on top of everything with the weekly newsletter, District directory, website and other types of communications throughout the school year.
7. Classroom supplies and teacher resources: Our teachers and staff are so appreciative of all that we do to help them so that they can remain focused on their top priority - their students.
6. Lunchtime programs: Sports supervision and teacher-directed clubs allow kids to explore different activities during their free time.
5. Art: There are many different art electives at Hillview thanks to Anna Kogan.
4. Drama: What kid doesn't need a little more drama in their life? That is why we have Bill Hairston, our drama teacher, for those who like to participate in the show or just watch it!
3. Electives and Mini-Courses: Exploring robotics, broadcasting, drama and woodshop are just some of the ways that kids at Hillview can discover new interests that spark their learning. Hillview's electives and Mini-Courses are more than just a fun activity for your child!
2. Field Trips and assemblies: Expanding your child's learning in fun and interesting ways.
1. More classroom teachers: Keeping our class sizes down helps build the relationship between the teachers and their students.
Imagine your child's day without these people, programs and events. It just wouldn't be Hillview! All of this exists because of your support of the PTO and the MPAEF.

Mini-Course Ideas Wanted
|
You've heard the buzz and the buzz is REAL!
For the first time, Hillview will be offering an amazing week-long learning experience for all students through our Mini-Course program March 17 - 21.
Hillview's Mini-Courses inspire students to explore their passions, open their minds to new ideas and delve into the world around them while engaging in critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication to shine new light on learning.
We want your feedback and ideas. This is your chance to tell the planning committee what programs you would LOVE to see offered in March. The window to provide your input for this year will close soon, so log on now and complete this quick online survey. The survey will close on Monday, September 23.
And parents, we also want your student's input. Please have them fill out this Student Survey to let us know what they are thinking!

Green Tech Speakers Wanted
|
Are you a professional or know someone working in the green technology or environmental field?
Science teacher Julie Hilborn is teaching an environmental science elective for 6th graders. She would love to have guest speakers with this expertise or even offer a field trip to their place of work with about 20 - 25 students.
Please contact Julie Hilborn if interested.

Math Club
|
Does your child love math? Do mathematical puzzles and riddles excite them and make them wonder about the world? If the answer is yes, then Hillview's Math Club is the place for them!
Ms. McNinch will be leading Hillview's Math Club this year. Math Club is a great club that gives students the opportunity to do exciting math problems and games as well as being able to explore the incredible world of mathematics with friends in a fun environment. Students also have the option to participate in math competitions.
Our first meeting will be in room D-7 (Mrs. Bromberg's classroom) on Tuesday, September 17 during lunch. Bring paper, a pencil and a positive attitude.

On Thursday, September 12, a Project Cornerstone "Taking It Personally" session began at Encinal School. This is a six-week session with each session beginning at 8:45 a.m., and it will continue through October 17. In the Taking It Personally (TIP) series, the facilitator "helps adults understand and make a stronger commitment to supporting young people and provides tools, exercises and strategies to help participants fulfill their commitment. Participants are encouraged to continue meeting after the formal workshops end to support each other's efforts and work together to create new opportunities in their schools, neighborhoods, organizations or communities."
If you wanted to participate in this session but couldn't make it on September 12, and you want to benefit from the full six weeks, La Entrada has generously invited any of our families who are interested to join their session, which will run on Tuesdays, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m., from October 1 - November 5. La Entrada only asks that you stop by their main office and sign in as a visitor.
There will be other TIP series later in the school year, and we generally schedule in the evenings for working parents. We highly recommend that parents attend on of these session; you will absolutely love it! Contact Willy Haug with any questions.
