openHouseOpen House

Please join Hillview Middle School faculty for a celebration of learning during the annual Open House on Thursday, May 23 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Classrooms will be open and learning on display for students to share with their family what they have achieved and how they have grown this school year.

A flyer with a schedule of events was mailed to your address several weeks ago, but it can also be viewed online.

Electives Fair

Part of the "Hillview 3.0" re-design process was improving and increasing our elective offerings. Current 6th and 7th graders will attend their first-ever "Electives Fair" during school on Monday, May 20. They will learn about all the terrific trimester and year-long electives from which they can choose.

On the evening of May 20, Power School will be open to all students in order to request their electives online. Also available on May 20 will be a Course Catalogue on the school's website for parents and students to read together and consider which electives they would like to request for next year. Remember, next year students will be able to choose two electives instead of taking a quiet study time at the end of the day. Students and parents are encouraged to think strategically about their choice. While there may be a desire to do "everything," having a time in the day to get help on topics that are difficult or to complete most of one's homework at school has its advantages for busy teens. Please consider your options carefully.

teacherTeacher/Staff Gifts

Don't forget to take care of your year-end teacher gifts by donating to the Hillview Teacher/Staff Gift Fund by Friday, May 31. At the end of each school year, PTO volunteers organize a centralized fund to recognize the more than 70 Hillview staff members. Parents are encouraged to contribute at whatever level is comfortable and all donations are used to provide gift cards to the Hillview team on the last day of school. More information can be found on the PTO website.

So far, eight percent of all Hillview families have donated to the fund, and we've collected 23 percent of the contributions we raised last year. Please help us give the gift fund a boost by making an online donation via PayPal. Or, if you prefer to give by check, please make it payable to Tina Bird and mail it her at to 540 Grace Dr., Menlo Park 94025.

gradGrad Party Chaperones

Don't miss out on getting a glimpse of what 8th grade graduation is like. A few volunteer spots are left for parents of 6th and 7th grade students to chaperone and help with food for the 2013 Graduation Party on Thursday, June 13.

Please register or find out more information online.

All students are asked to bring a few flowers and drop them off at the collection carts in front of the school or deliver them to the Hillview kitchen prior to the start of class. Bouquets will be assembled from the donations and delivered to all Hillview staff in appreciation for their dedication and hard work.

lunchThank You Lunch

It is almost the end of the school year and we would like to honor all of the wonderful volunteers that make Hillview the great school it is. Every year volunteers donate thousands of hours of their time working in the library, hot lunch, site council, grade level events, special day events, classroom projects and more!

Come and enjoy a light lunch on Wednesday, May 29 from 12 - 1:30 p.m. in the Hillview PAC and allow us to THANK YOU and celebrate all that we have accomplished together this year.

To ensure a wonderful event, please RSVP online no later than Wednesday, May 22, if you are attending.

careerCareer Day

We are looking for parents and community members who would be willing to share their profession with our students during 8th Grade Career Day on Friday, May 24.

Please contact Robyn Wattsif you have questions and/or would like to volunteer. Thank you!

vaccination6th Grade Parents: Vaccination

All incoming 7th graders in the 2013-14 school year are required by law to provide proof of a whooping cough (pertussis) booster or Tdap shot. (Td does not meet the requirement.) Students will not be admitted to school if proof is not received before the first day of school.

If you have not already done so, please bring an updated copy of your child's immunization record to the school office by Friday, May 31. If there is a verified medical condition against vaccination, you are required to provide the school with a doctor's written statement which must include the specific nature and probable duration of the medical condition. If there is a personal belief for not vaccinating, you must come into the school office and sign a personal belief exemption.

Acceptable proof of immunization includes:

  • Print-out or copy of immunization record from your child's clinic or physician's office
  • A copy of the yellow immunization record
  • A certification of Tdap booster letter from your child's clinic or physician's office.
All these documents must have your child's name, date of birth, date Tdap was administered and a stamp or physician's signature from the clinic.

For more information about the law and whooping cough, visit the District Health Services website or
contact Nancy McMahon, Health Services Assistant or call (650) 321-7140 x 5912.

M-A Volunteering

Is your 8th grader attending Menlo-Atherton High School next year? If so, please sign up to be on the administrative support volunteer list. There are no specific obligations. When the M-A Administration needs parent volunteers, we send out an email. If the volunteer opportunity fits in your schedule, you sign up; otherwise no need to respond.

A sampling of events that use lots of parent volunteers are Arena Check-In, textbook distribution, schedule distribution, STAR test sorting and AP test proctoring. Volunteering for Administrative Support a few times a year is loads of fun and a great way to meet other M-A parents and find out what's happening at M-A. To be placed on the list, please send in an email with your name to AdminSupport@mabearspta.org.
