"Extreme By Design"

Special Preview of upcoming PBS film

by Kikim Media and Hawkview

Thursday, April 18

6:15 - 8:45 p.m.

Hillview Performing Arts Center

Keynote by Erik Burmeister, Principal of Hillview Middle School

"Blazing a New Trail: How Hillview is Using Design Thinking to Redesign School"

Design thinking is all about developing and using an innovator's mindset-the habits of mind that help our kids from Kindergarten to eighth grade embrace challenges and persevere with confidence. MPCSD is committed to Innovation as a Core Value, and wants our kids to be inspired to make positive change in our community and in the world! So how do we encourage an innovator's mindset in the classroom? Come hear Erik Burmeister share his vision for how Hillview is using design thinking to redesign school from the master schedule to instruction in the classroom. Ralph King, Jr., filmmaker and Pulitzer Prize nominee, will introduce the film. The hour-long documentary follows a band of Stanford students who design and build products to solve seemingly intractable problems for the world's poor. A panel discussion, composed of MPCSD elementary and middle school teachers, administrators, and parents, along with a graduate student and producer from the film, will follow to discuss ways our students are developing an innovator's mindset and answer questions from the audience. Join us for an evening of inspired conversation!

Learn more about the film and what teachers across the nation have to say.

Space is limited. Please register for this event online by Friday, April 12.

Master Schedule and PTO Meetingmaster

Please come to the Hillview PTO General Meeting on Wednesday, April 24 at 10 a.m. in the Hillview PAC. We will vote in our new board members and pass the preliminary budget for 2013 - 2014.

Erik Burmeister will also present the 2013 - 2014 Hillview Master Schedule at this time. He will present this information again on Thursday, April 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the Hillview PAC.

talentshowTalent Show

Buy your tickets to the annual Hillview Talent Show coming up on Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20 at 6:30 p.m. both nights.

Tickets officially go on sale online today. The only way to secure your seat ahead of time is to purchase your tickets online and print them at home. Last year, both shows sold out, and we expect this year's show to be sold out, too. Get your tickets early!

Cost is $10 for adults and $7 for students/children/seniors plus a $0.50 online fee per ticket. Limited tickets will be available at the door, but secure your seat now and avoid disappointment. Seating is first come, first served and we are asking all attendees to arrive about 10-15 minutes early. Doors open at 6:10 p.m.

Our talented Hawks are busy preparing this year's theme and rehearsing their acts. It's going to be another incredible Hillview event with a fabulous new venue, the Hillview Performing Arts Center.

For more information, please contact Brian Darmanin.

Got Couch?

Mr. Darmanin and his team of Talent Show M.C.'s would like to borrow a comfy couch to use both nights of the talent show, Friday, April 19 and Saturday, April 20

Our old couch didn't make the trip over from the old campus and we need a couch to host our VIP MPAEF Auction Winners. If you think you can help, please contact Brian Darmanin.

Garden Service Project

Collective Roots, a non-profit organization, would like middle school students to help teach a gardening/cooking class to 2nd graders at Green Oaks Elementary School. Hillview students would be assisting an educator from Collective Roots for about one hour per week for five - six weeks. Block H points would be earned for this service.

If interested, please contact Ethan Oro. Ethan is a former Hillview Middle School student and currently attends MA High School.

Please note, that although students will earn Block H points for volunteering, this is not a school-sponsored event.

7th Grade Parent Hostshosting

Calling all 7th grade parents! It's a Hillview tradition that parents of the school's 7th graders donate food and refreshments and volunteer on-site for the 8th Grade Graduation Reception.

This year's reception, an event for all graduates and their families, will take place in the late afternoon on Thursday, June 13. We'll soon be sending out signups for parents to provide food, as well as to help set up reception tables, arrange and refill food platters and clean up after the event.

Please email Peri Caylor to let us know if you're interested. We'll be back in touch in a few weeks with a sign-up sheet.
