Alumni Feature:
Amanda Allen and Sarah Buckland

During their time at Wayland, Amanda Allen and Sarah Buckland were commonly involved in crazy antics, drama and humor. As theatre majors, they delighted many WBU audiences with their dramatic skills.  Today, those lessons are coming in handy as the two head a Chicago-based nonprofit called Nose Goes, performing medical clowning. Read More
Director's Message
Dear Fellow Pioneers:

What's that old limerick?

Spring has sprung, Fall has fell,
Summer is here and it's hotter than usual

Ok, Ok, lame humor, I admit, but true nonetheless.

Now that we have the weather out of the way, let me encourage you to consider attending Homecoming /Parent Weekend Sept. 16-17. It's a little earlier than usual because we felt Howard Payne would make a good opponent for football and maybe attract a bigger crowd.

The Class of 1966 is the Honor Class and attendees will be especially recognized at chapel on Friday at 11 a.m. in Harral Auditorium after all alums from the 1960s are invited to have breakfast at 7:30 a.m. in UC 211.

At Friday's chapel, we'll recognize the Distinguished Alumni (the highest honor given by the Association of Former Students), Distinguished Leadership Alumni Award, Distinguished Service Alumni Award, Distinguished Young Alumni Award and the Distinguished Benefactor Award. Former members of the International Choir will join current members to sing at chapel.

All honorees and graduates of 50 years and beyond will be honored at the Legacy Luncheon at 12:30 p.m. in UC 211 where our new president, Dr. Bobby Hall, retired University Historian Dr. Estelle Owens, and a student speaker will discuss Wayland Past, Present and Future. A reception for honorees and for Dr. Owen is scheduled from 3:30-5 in Gates Hall Auditorium.

Friday evening's agenda includes a free cookout on "Moody Marsh" in front of Harral Auditorium from 5-7 p.m., a "Shorts" play at 7:30 in the Black Box Theater and a pep rally at 9:30 in Hutcherson Center.

Saturday's activities included the Athletic Hall of Honor induction at 9:30 in the Laney Center foyer, a Parent Weekend brunch at 10 a.m. in the Student Ministries worship center, free wraps or hot dogs and ice cream at Bulldog Stadium from 12-1:30 and the football game at 2.

We'll be announcing all honorees in our next newsletter.

The classes of 1974-78 will be having some special socializing times during the weekend and if you'd like to get members of your class (and even classes close to yours) together, we can sure help you do that. Just contact me at andrewsd@wbu.edu or call 806-291-3603.

You can register for the weekend online at the Alumni link at wbu.edu

The Wayland family has suffered the loss of three former faculty members in recent months - Dr. J. Hoyt Bowers and Dr. Harold Reese from the School of Math and Science - and Mary Lou Moman from the School of Music. Wayland was enriched by their commitment and expertise. Please pray God's comfort on their families.

The 5-year campaign to raise $14 million for various campus improvements - particularly renovation of the Math and Science Building and the three women's dorms - is underway.

Our Advancement Office can provide you - via mail, e-mail or personal visit - all the information about the various projects designed to upgrade our facilities and remain competitive in recruiting a new generation of students.

I'm encouraging all alums to support this effort at the level their family budget will permit. A lot of folks find a monthly credit card charge an easy and efficient way to give a larger amount over the next 3 to 5 years - i.e., $28 a month for three years is $1,004; $50 is $1,800. That's probably "doable" for just about all of us. Some can do more; some can't hit those marks; all can do something.

Here's an idea for alums who lived in Owen, Fleming-Mays or Ferguson: Maybe you and a roommate or roommates could pay for one room to be remodeled if you could pay it out over 3-5 years.

Wayland provided an excellent education, a lifetime of memories and wonderful friends for all of us and most of us benefited from scholarship assistance.

Please show your Pioneer Pride and let us count you in on this worthy effort. Contact me at andrewsd@wbu.edu or 806-291-3603 if I can help you.

Blessings to you and yours,
Danny Andrews
