In 1934, George Gershwin penned an aria for the 1935 opera "Porgy and Bess." The first lines go like this:
Summertime,
And the livin' is easy
Fish are jumpin'
And the cotton is high
Well, I hope life has slowed down a bit for you and yours this summer, that the fish are jumping out of the water at your favorite fishing hole and that, if you're growing it, your cotton is going to be high (in stature and price) this year.
It will only be a few weeks until students start heading for campus and if you know any graduates - recent or otherwise - who are still looking for a college home, call or have them call our Admissions Office at 806-291-3500. We'd love to have them join the Wayland family.
We are considering combining Parent Weekend with Homecoming Oct. 2-3 when the classes of 1960-69 will be honored with special emphasis on the 50th Anniversary Class of 1965. The way our football schedule falls, we have games on three consecutive weekends in late September and early October but aren't home again until late October. Stay tuned for more details. By the way, the Pioneers open the season Aug. 29 against Southwestern Kansas. See the football schedule here.
Work has begun on the new Jimmy Dean Museum to be built just west of the Museum of the Llano Estacado. If weather cooperates, it should be completed by late spring 2016 and will be a wonderful addition and attraction to Plainview and Wayland.
We encourage you to check our Wayland Facebook page regularly for current information and interesting photos.
We're always looking for Class Notes about weddings, promotions, new jobs, new babies, etc. You can send them to andrewsd@wbu.edu and photos are considered as well. Deadline for the August issue is July 20.
A reminder that my book, "Things I Have Saw and Did - 50 Years of Thinking Out Loud," is still available for $25, including shipping, and you'll be in a drawing for a nice large Wayland blanket. Checks can be made to Danny Andrews, 1305 Itasca, Plainview, TX 79072. More than $13,000 has been contributed to the general scholarship fund so far.
Also, if you didn't purchase a yearbook when you were in Wayland or have lost yours, contact me at andrewsd@wbu.edu and I'll send you one (if available and most from 1949 are) for the price of mailing.
Say a good word for Wayland today!
