Greetings to Pioneers everywhere:
I was touched recently when I received an alumni information form from Sherri King, Director and Assistant Professor of Academic Achievement.
It had been e-mailed by Daniel Barea, a Human Resources Technician for the United States Army in Virginia. Daniel is taking online courses via our campus in Fairbanks, Alaska.
He included information that his wife, Esther, is a full-time mom and homeschools their four children - Jaewon, Gianna, Jovie and Gemma. He's a member of Immanuel Bible Church in Springfield, Va. and is involved in the College Ministry and Men's Ministry.
But the information that got my attention was this simple sentence: "I got saved by Christ while attending WBU." When I contacted him, Daniel elaborated: "Years ago, a non-commissioned officer mentioned you guys (Wayland) to me and said, 'Hey free books.' God had other plans. I got saved and now desire to do the Master of Divinity from WBU. God bless Wayland. All glory to Christ."
We know that folks like Daniel are receiving and have received a great education from Wayland. But it is a greater thrill to know that he found a personal relationship with the Master Teacher.
Some of us who have attended Wayland-Plainview and can tell stories about being in Old Testament and New Testament classes taught by such legendary names as Brower Maddox, Fred Howard, Ivyloy Bishop and Fred Meeks. But some may not be aware that all students at our external campuses and even online students must have a minimum six hours of Bible in order to receive a degree.
There are many stories about students, particularly at the external campuses, who have come to faith after hearing the Gospel message - maybe even for the first time - in class or because of the influence of other Christians.
What a great affirmation of Wayland's mission to educate people in the context of faith in Christ.
To God be the glory - great things He has done.
