Alumni Happenings
Former WBU Homecoming Queen Becca Whittle Wilhite and her family.
Alumni Feature:
Becca Wilhite

When Becca Whittle Wilhite came to Wayland in the fall of 1996, she knew she would be a Flying Queen, but she didn't know that was not the only kind of Queen she would be at Wayland. Becca remembers being "really shocked" when Wayland's student body elected her Homecoming Queen in 1999.

Project Giveaway Success!

51 Wayland students made their way to the Young Alumni Association's first Giveaway Project. The Young Alumni Board (YAB) worked throughout the summer to collect donations for the project. Students chose a few items at a time over the course of three hours and freshmen got first pick. Every 30 minutes, YAB volunteers held a drawing for Walmart gift cards, gift baskets, and large items such as a couch, TV, microwave, and vacuum.

Freshmen made up 61 percent of the participants, but students of all classifications received items in the giveaway.  Students from all seven campus dorms and several apartment complexes took home giveaway items; nearly half of those were from Jimmy Dean Hall.

The Wayland Young Alumni Board and all the students served wish to send a giant THANK YOU to all those who donated to the project. We plan to do this again, so remember the Giveaway Project during your next yard sale preparations or spring cleaning!
Director's Message

Hey, Fellow Pioneers:

I want to commend Amy Loafman, our former Assistant Director of Alumni (now teaching kindergartners at Thunderbird Elementary in Plainview), and Sarah Langston, one of our Young Alumni Board members, for their great work in organizing the alumni involvement in the Initiation of the Flame ceremony as part of Koinonia. We had about 30 people attend a dinner before the ceremony at which Greg Brown, Tyler Topper and Aubrey Pedigo made very meaningful comments about their Wayland experiences and the importance of being a supportive alum and carrying on our great traditions.

There's still time to register for Homecoming Sept. 18-20 and we hope you'll make plans to attend if you haven't already. You can register online at wbualumni.com or by calling 806-291-3603. Lots of fun activities are scheduled and we hope you'll be a part.

Let me encourage you to mark Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 on your calendar to be a part of the Big Give, a unique effort to raise $106,000 in celebration of the University's 106th anniversary. More information will be forthcoming.

We're excited about the Pioneer football team starting the season with a 28-21 victory over Arizona Christian in Phoenix and now three straight games at home. Our soccer, volleyball, golf and cross country teams are in action and we're anticipating another great overall athletic season.

Pioneers Forever,

Danny Andrews
Director of Alumni Development
