PALs Coffee Chats

We continue to be inspired by the parents we meet at our informational meetings throughout L.A. We would love to come visit your neighborhood or parent group. We can help answer questions on education and offer ways to help you with your child's education experience. Do you know how to contact your elected officials, how to seek help for your child that might not be getting enough, does your child need an education plan? We can help you. Contact us at  pals@parentsadvocateleague.org.

Did You Vote?
There were some key elections throughout California that affect education. One election was the primary for State Superintendent for Public Instruction. There were three candidates: Tom Torlakson; Marshal Tuck; and Lydia Gutierrez. The final vote will be in November between Marshal Tuck and Tom Torlakson.

Make sure you are doing your research and learning everything you need to know about these candidates. Your vote matters.

There is a disturbing trend in LAUSD to reduce the school choice options for parents.  In April, two of the very successful Aspire charter schools applied for a charter renewal.  The charter school was denied by a majority of board members.

Shocking!

I attend many school board meetings and I am sometimes shocked by the behavior of some Board Members. Here is a recent example of some of the strange and frankly underhanded tactics used at board meetings.

School Choice Policy in California

PAL Executive Director, Julie Collier was honored to be a panelist for last week's New Leadership Conference hosted by Scripps College.

This annual conference brings young women from a variety of California colleges together to learn about careers in policy and to inspire future leaders. The panel discussion centered on choices in education in California.

These young women were a great audience and bring great hope for the future. Thank you Scripps College for inviting Parents Advocate League to be part of your annual conference!

From the PAL Blog...
a great idea from a PAL!

One of the best things about my job is meeting so many parents that have figured out a way to be an advocate for their kids' education. During a recent parent meeting held in a cozy home in Woodland Hills, we met a Mom that shared a tradition she decided to start to help hold the district and administration accountable. Knowing our kids get a report card, she decided the district should get one too, but from a parent perspective. She writes an email outlining how the year went for her children. This is such a simple and effective way to help your voice be heard.
