New Funding For California Schools

Do you know about the new funding source for California schools called Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF)?

The funding is based on the demographic profile of students with more funding going to low socioeconomic students. Most of the categorical funding that was in place prior to LCFF is gone allowing districts to decide where the funding will go with particular targets:

  • Grade span-specific base grants that reflect adjustments for grades K-3 class sizes and grades 9-12 career technical education;
  • Supplemental grants equal to 20 percent of the adjusted base grants multiplied by the LEA's unduplicated percentage of English learners, free and reduced-price meal eligible, and foster youth students;
  • Concentration grants equal to 50 percent of the adjusted base grants multiplied by an LEA's percentage of unduplicated pupils above 55 percent;
  • Small school allowance for any qualifying school; and
  • Two add-ons equal to the amounts LEAs received in 2012-13 for the Targeted Instructional Improvement Block Grant and Home-to-School Transportation programs.

School districts throughout California are currently voting or will be voting on their LCFF funding plan called Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP). Districts are supposed to have parent advisor committees that examine the LCAP and offer their opinions prior to the boards of their districts or charter schools vote on them. Learn more by asking your child's principal about the LCAP and how your school will be funded.

Partner Spotlight
Come visit the CCSA website!

This month we want to introduce PALs to the California Charter School Association (CCSA). CCSA is a force in California to ensure students have charter schools as a choice in their education. They help charter schools through the many hoops and loopholes to get a new charter school started or through their renewal process.

They also have CCSA Advocates that makes sure policies are in place to allow charter school options for parents and CCSA Families that support families that want charter schools in their communities.

Recently, CCSA Advocate hosted a Candidate forum for all candidates running for Orange County School Board of Education. It was an informative event and CCSA President, Jed Wallace, explained why charter schools should be a better option for families in Orange County. He stated California has double the amount of kids in the last 5 years. Los Angeles has 22% charter schools while Orange County only has 2% charter schools.

Take time to visit these organizations' websites and follow them on Twitter and Facebook.

Be Sure to Vote on June 3rd!
Please take time to vote this Tuesday in the June elections!

Important seats are up for election that could impact your child's education. The California State Superintendent is one of them. We won't tell you how to vote. It is your final decision. Take time to research all the candidates. Ask around. Teachers are a good source, but do not just rely on this one source. Ask a variety of people in your community what their thoughts are, including people that are working hard for students. Consider alternate points of view and the motivations of the source of information (propaganda) and who is funding and benefiting from a candidate or initiative.

Make the decision based on what is best for your child and other students. It's your voice, and your right to use it. Don't let Tuesday come and go without YOUR vote for students in California.
