HEY, HUSKIES: ITS TUESDAY!!

Welcome to yet another edition of the Graduate Student Newsletter. With all of the snow that our campus and Boston has seen over the past two weeks (including today!), you might be wondering what happened to scheduled meetings or upcoming events? Well, we're going to try and fill in those blanks for you in this edition and to let you know of some awesome new events that are on the horizon. To be safe, check the website for updates Enjoy!

 

THESIS/DISSERTATION RESEARCH GRANT OPPORTUNITY:

The office of the Provost for Research and Graduate Education and the Graduate Student Government are pleased to announce the Thesis/Dissertation Grant Program. The grant program is designed to help full-time graduate students meet the costs associated with completing their thesis or dissertation research, to improve the quality and impact of their research, and/or to support research endeavors intellectually independent of the adviser. Applicants for the dissertation fellowship awards must be full-time students in good academic standing. Master's students or doctoral students who have not yet achieved doctoral candidacy are eligible to apply for up to $1,500. Students who have completed the required program course work and exams and have achieved doctoral candidacy at the time of application are eligible to apply for up to $3,000. The application deadline is Friday, March 6, 2015. Additional information may be found here. 

 

ISSI CARNEVALE:

Carnevale is an annual cultural celebration that highlights the rich diversity found on campus through the promotion of intercultural awareness and exploration. A variety of festivities will encourage a connection between members of the Northeastern Community while highlighting the wonderful differences between our backgrounds and lifestyles. This collaboration and participation emphasizes the existence of a singular beautiful humanity here at Northeastern. Details can be found here

FEBRUARY IS BLACK HISTORY MONTH 

Please join the John D. O'Bryant African-American Institute during the month of February in celebration of Black History Month. Some wonderful events and activities have been planned that capture the history and contributions of African Americans in American History and the World. Follow the link for the months' list of scheduled programs. 

 

CATLR: 

Do you have a question about teaching? Do you want feedback on your teaching statement or syllabus? The Center for Advancing Teaching & Learning Through Research now offers teaching support for graduate students in their roles as teaching assistants, course instructors, and future faculty. OFF CAMPUS HOUSING:

Whether it's your first time apartment hunting or you've been on the hunt before, here are a few reminders to keep in mind as you search for the perfect place! Remember that your lease is a legal document so you want to be sure you've read and understand all aspects of the lease before you sign! If you have questions, specify with your landlord. Your lease should include the following to keep an eye out for before signing the document: 

- Apartment address + Unit number

- Names of ALL tenants (ie. roommates)

- Name of landlord

- Start & end date to your lease

- Rent amount, due date, and how to pay

- Contact information for repairs and emergency requests

- Promises of repairs to be made (if any)

FINANCIAL AID REMINDER: 

The 2015-16 FAFSA is now available for students to complete here. Graduate students are encouraged to complete the FAFSA before the priority filing deadline of March 1, 2015. Completing the FAFSA by the deadline ensures that you are considered for limited funds such as the Perkins Loan and the Nursing Student Loan. You do not have to have completed your taxes before filing the FAFSA. If you will not complete your taxes before March 1st, you can still file your FAFSA based on an estimate using your tax return from last year or your W2s. You can then go back later to update the FAFSA once your taxes have been filed.

Graduate Student Government
At the February 3 Senate meeting, the GSG presented the results from the graduate student survey. A summary of the results is posted along with the meeting minutes on the GSG website.  Additionally, at the meeting, Aditya Tarang Patel was elected as new Vice President of Programs and Administration.  We would like to thank the outgoing VP of Programs & Administration, Mitasvil Patel, for his service and contribution in furthering the objectives of GSG. 
Due to today's snow closing, the next Senate Meeting which is scheduled for Feb 17.  On the agenda are presentations from two new graduate student requesting GSG recognition.  Please mark your calenders for all of the remaining Senate Meetings of the semester, The schedule is available on the GSG website.

Please note that the deadline for applying for conference funding for the April/May period is March 6, 2015. Please make sure to turn in your applications by then.

GSG awards the Graduate Innovator Award at Research, Innovation, and Scholarship Expo (RISE). Students who are interested in learning more about the innovative and cutting edge research that fellow graduate students are involved in can volunteer to be a judge. All interested candidates may apply via the application form.  All applicants will be contacted by March 20th. 


 

Career Development
There are many opportunities through Northeastern's Career Development department to get you geared up and ready for that job after graduation. Events are scheduled specifically for graduate students as well as recurring events such as resume and cover letter writing sessions, career coaching, and even on-campus recruiting!

You can go ahead and book an appointment with a career counselor through the MyNEU portal. Here's how:
1. Log on to MyNEU
2. Click on the "Career Development" tab
3. Click on the "Career Counselor Appointment" link
4. Select from the drop down menu "Career Services"
5. View available appointments by clicking on a counselors name

LGBTQ CAREER CONFERENCE: Registration is now Open

The Reach (OUT) Career Conference will be held on Saturday March 21, 2015 at 103 Stearns Center from 10am-3pm. Registration is FREE and open to all Northeastern students. Click here to RSVP. The event features LGBTQ professionals from various industries and professions to discuss the realities of the workplace and strategies for professional success. Panelists represent industries such as academia, corporate finance, consulting, social work, theater/arts and more. Participants will share advice and engage in dialogue around career advancement. Please join us for a discussion with Jim Vrabel, author of A People's History of the New Boston, along with community activists Tom Corrigan and Ron Hafer on Tuesday Februay 17 at noon in room 90 of Snell Library. SCHOLAR OneSearch UPDATE:
The Library continues to improve the content offerings in Scholar OneSearch, the main search engine on the library's home page. Effective this week, Scholar OneSearch now includes articles from Proquest databases Ethnic Newswatch, Genderwatch, Entrepreneurship, and Accounting and Tax. If you are off-campus. please sign in to see all available resources. 

 

HAVE AN IDEA FOR A SCHOLARLY DIGITAL PROJECT?

The library's Digital Scholarship Group is now accepting proposals for pilot projects to test the DRS Project Toolkit, a new user-friendly set of tools for building digital projects using the objects and photographs in our Digital Repository Service. If you've always wanted to build an exhibit, map, timeline, or other data visualization learning object, or anything else using our digital collections, please consider applying!
