December 3, 2013

As the semester quickly draws to a close, all students are busily working on their final papers, preparing for finals, or for those TAs, preparing finals or grading papers.  This can be a very stressful time of year.  University Health and Counseling Services has some tips and pointers for Stress Reduction During Finals.

While finishing up the semester may be your most immediate need, planning for the future should never be far from top of the list.  This first-hand perspective of networking is relevant to students throughout their graduate career.  For those PhD students who will be completing their program, a new book offers some tips on entering an academic career. A short interview with the author provides some insights for all PhD students.

Best of luck on finals and have a great Winter Break.  The newsletter will return on January 14, 2014.   If you have any questions, comments or suggestions for the Graduate Student News, feel free to contact Dan Volchok via e-mail or at 617-373-5422.

Did You Know?

Health-N-You - The University Health and Counseling Services staff has a blog on health and wellness issues for NU students.  As you may have heard, a Meningitis outbreak at Princeton University and other campuses has once again brought this disease to the forefront. See this week's blog about Meningitis and tips for prevention.

Student Conduct Board - The Student Conduct Board (SCB) is a board composed entirely of Northeastern students that hears cases involving graduate, undergraduate, and professional studies students who have allegedly violated the Code of Student Conduct.  It is vital that the board has members from the Graduate Student Community.  The Office of Student Conduct & Conflict Resolution is currently recruiting Student Conduct Board members for the 2014-2015 academic year. They seek students who are fair, dependable, mature, and who possess leadership qualities.  No prior experience needed and all graduate majors and colleges are welcome. Candidates must be continuing as a Northeastern student for the 2014-2015 academic year. For additional information and the application form, visit their website.

Graduate Student Government News

The final GSG Senate Meeting for the semester will be held on Wednesday, December 4, 12-1pm in Curry Student Center 348. In addition to our regular business, we will elect a new Vice President for Finance.  Candidates will outline their qualifications and desire for the position.

A special THANK YOU to Foram Shah, an MS student in Information Systems, for her dedicated work this semester as the VP for Finance.  She has managed numerous group and individual funding requests while on a full-time co-op.

The GAMES Initiative - The GAMES initiative seeks to encourage more young girls to choose to pursue STEM careers, using the gaming medium. This national initiative was founded by Northeastern University, the National Girls Collaborative Project (NGCP), and the Institute of Systems Biology (ISB). The initiative was launched with over 264 attendees in Seattle, Charlotte, and Boston in late June, 2013. That event created five working groups of volunteers: Research/Assessment, Gamers (Game Jam, game design, and production), Fundraisers, Networkers, and Girls + Gender Advocacy. The research phase will start this fall, by answering key initial questions and developing components which need to be included in any game plot to achieve our GAMES goal.  For more information, view this video recap of the launch event or visit the GAMES website. If you would like to join the Initiative, complete the sign up form.

Charlotte Campus Launches New Student Ambassador Program  - At the beginning of the fall term the Charlotte campus launched its new Graduate Student Ambassador Program. From a diverse and distinguished group of applicants, four current students were selected to represent the university at both on campus and off campus events. These talented students from the leadership and project management programs will use their own experiences with Northeastern courses, faculty, and staff to engage prospective students. The Graduate Student Ambassadors are extending and augmenting local marketing efforts through in-person and relevant outreach in the Charlotte community with their own stories of success and satisfaction.
